The Detox Market now open on East Houston
More than two years after the new-building reveal, 76 E. Houston St. at Elizabeth has a new tenant... the Detox Market recently opened for business.
This is the first NYC outpost for the shop, with multiple locations in Los Angeles and Toronto, that offers "green beauty brands to detoxify your life" ...
The two-story structure, which is adjacent to the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall (also owned by Goldman Properties), was a long time coming. Construction took several years. (BoweryBoogie reported in October 2014 that work slowed down here due to Certificate of Occupancy issues and a dispute over the property line.)
No. 76 was previously home to the big top of Billy's Antiques.

At long last, 76 E. Houston St. reveals itself
This past Friday, workers began removing the construction netting/bubble wrap from 76 E. Houston St. ... the new two-story building at Elizabeth that has been under construction for an awfully long time (given the size of the project) ...
Construction has been going on now for two years. BoweryBoogie reported in October 2014 that work slowed down here due to Certificate of Occupancy issues and a dispute over the property line. (The issue was reportedly settled last summer.)
By the end of the day Saturday the sidewalk bridge had been carted off...
The previous brokers were billing this location as "the four corners of Downtown," with a summer 2015 completion date.
Cushman & Wakefield have the listing now. (Goldman Properties is the landlord.) The bare-bones listing didn't have much info, except that two commercial spaces are available: the ground floor is 775 square feet and the second level has 680 square feet. (Nothing about that rooftop space.)
The new building is adjacent to the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall, where Logan Hicks starts work on a new piece today.
No. 76 was previously home to the always-entertaining Billy's Antiques.

Checking in on the incoming building at 'the four corners of Downtown'
It has almost been four months since we checked in on the progress at 76 E. Houston St., where a 2-story building is in the works for the former Billy's Antiques space.
The northern wall is now quite visible from the street here between the Bowery and Elizabeth…
The brokers are marketing this location as "the four corners of Downtown," with a Summer 2015 completion date. Well, workers are obviously not going to make that deadline.
Eventually the space will look like this…

BoweryBoogie reported last fall that work slowed down here due to Certificate of Occupancy issues and a dispute over the property line.

Construction watch: 76 E. Houston St.
The construction at 76 E. Houston St. is now visible above the plywood here between the Bowery and Elizabeth, where a 2-story building is in the works for the former Billy's Antiques space.
The listing at Sinvin notes that this location is "surrounded by edgy apparel, chic restaurants, cultural landmarks, and residential anchors."
… the rent for the new building with "expansive roof deck" is upon request.
Seems as if the work has been plodding along here. (Check out BoweryBoogie's coverage for more background here.)
Meanwhile, apparently the space already has a fake retail client…
Charming!
Also, the mural wall will remain adjacent to the property.

Full stop work order for 76 E. Houston St., and the return of Billy's Antiques (sort of)
We noticed the stop work order on Thursday evening over at East Houston and Elizabeth, where a 2-story building is in the works for the former Billy's Antiques space.
We were waiting for the violations to be posted online. That hasn't happened yet.
Apparently the excavation/foundation is having an "influence" on the adjoining property, per the sign...
We'll update this post as soon as the infractions are online.
Meanwhile! Someone placed some Billy's Antiques stickers on the renderings...
Perhaps some wishful thinking. It was certainly a lot more fun with Billy Leroy here. Anyway, he hasn't 100-percent ruled out a return, as far as we know...

The mural wall will remain on the Bowery and East Houston
[EVG photo from June 27]
Workers erected a sidewalk bridge around the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall in late June, as we first reported here.
This was done ahead of a new two-floor building that will rise from the former home of Billy's Antiques on East Houston and Elizabeth.
We were unsure what this meant for the mural, which dates back 30-plus years to Keith Haring.
Renderings of the new building showed the mural still in place.
However, on Tuesday, we noticed that workers had started ripping down Cope 2's mural ...
By yesterday afternoon, the mural had been removed and hauled off. And then workers started wrapping up the rest of the mural wall...
Through the handy blogger portal we spotted photographer Martha Cooper, who has chronicled subway graffiti and urban art for several decades. She was taking photos of the work in progress as well as salvaging what she could of Cope 2's mural.
We spoke with her briefly. Here's how we understand it. What remains is the original wall with the mural from 2009 by Os Gêmeos, the twin brothers and street artists from Brazil. This work was apparently the favorite of Tony Goldman, the curator of the wall and property owner who died in September 2012. Subsequent artists painted over a temporary canvas, the one which workers just removed.
Cooper seemed pleased to say that the mural wall would remain adjacent to the new building.

Rendering reveal for new building going up adjacent to the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall
[EVG photo from Saturday]
As we first reported back on Saturday, workers erected a sidewalk bridge along the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall … obscuring the artwork in the process.
Approved plans call for a two-story structure to rise from the empty lot adjacent to the wall at 76 E. Houston St. and Elizabeth Street, which previously housed Billy's Antiques.
Renderings arrived on the sidewalk bridge Tuesday …
And from the looks of things, the mural wall will remain intact.
Meanwhile, through a handy blogging portal, you can still catch a glimpse of veteran Bronx graffiti artist Cope2's mural.
This does make it tough for wedding photos, unfortunately. Plan accordingly!

The Houston/Bowery Mural Wall has been boarded up
Workers yesterday erected a sidewalk bridge along the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall, mostly blocking the work of the current artist in the rotation — veteran Bronx graffiti artist Cope2.
The bridge joins the section that went up on Elizabeth Street at East Houston late last month at the former site of Billy's Antiques.
As BoweryBoogie first reported in April, there are approved plans for a two-story structure to rise from this empty lot.
Goldman Properties owns 76 E. Houston St. and the adjacent graffiti wall.
BoweryBoogie uncovered a feasibility study performed by Gary H. Silver Architects showing one possibility for this corner where the mural currently stands — a 12-story building. (This rendering is no longer on the Silver website.)

There's nothing on file with the DOB to suggest any new building of this size here.
So it's unclear at this point what the future holds for the wall. In the short term, it doesn't look so good.
Keith Haring put up the first mural here 30-plus years ago. Read this post at Complex for more history of the wall here at East Houston and the Bowery.
