The Detox Market now open on East Houston

More than two years after the new-building reveal, 76 E. Houston St. at Elizabeth has a new tenant... the Detox Market recently opened for business.

This is the first NYC outpost for the shop, with multiple locations in Los Angeles and Toronto, that offers "green beauty brands to detoxify your life" ...

The two-story structure, which is adjacent to the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall (also owned by Goldman Properties), was a long time coming. Construction took several years. (BoweryBoogie reported in October 2014 that work slowed down here due to Certificate of Occupancy issues and a dispute over the property line.)

No. 76 was previously home to the big top of Billy's Antiques.

At long last, 76 E. Houston St. reveals itself

This past Friday, workers began removing the construction netting/bubble wrap from 76 E. Houston St. ... the new two-story building at Elizabeth that has been under construction for an awfully long time (given the size of the project) ...

Construction has been going on now for two years. BoweryBoogie reported in October 2014 that work slowed down here due to Certificate of Occupancy issues and a dispute over the property line. (The issue was reportedly settled last summer.)

By the end of the day Saturday the sidewalk bridge had been carted off...

The previous brokers were billing this location as "the four corners of Downtown," with a summer 2015 completion date.

Cushman & Wakefield have the listing now. (Goldman Properties is the landlord.) The bare-bones listing didn't have much info, except that two commercial spaces are available: the ground floor is 775 square feet and the second level has 680 square feet. (Nothing about that rooftop space.)

The new building is adjacent to the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall, where Logan Hicks starts work on a new piece today.

Full stop work order for 76 E. Houston St., and the return of Billy's Antiques (sort of)

We noticed the stop work order on Thursday evening over at East Houston and Elizabeth, where a 2-story building is in the works for the former Billy's Antiques space.

We were waiting for the violations to be posted online. That hasn't happened yet.

Apparently the excavation/foundation is having an "influence" on the adjoining property, per the sign...

We'll update this post as soon as the infractions are online.

Meanwhile! Someone placed some Billy's Antiques stickers on the renderings...

Perhaps some wishful thinking. It was certainly a lot more fun with Billy Leroy here. Anyway, he hasn't 100-percent ruled out a return, as far as we know...

Rendering reveal for new building going up adjacent to the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall

[EVG photo from Saturday]

As we first reported back on Saturday, workers erected a sidewalk bridge along the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall … obscuring the artwork in the process.

Approved plans call for a two-story structure to rise from the empty lot adjacent to the wall at 76 E. Houston St. and Elizabeth Street, which previously housed Billy's Antiques.

Renderings arrived on the sidewalk bridge Tuesday …

And from the looks of things, the mural wall will remain intact.

Meanwhile, through a handy blogging portal, you can still catch a glimpse of veteran Bronx graffiti artist Cope2's mural.

This does make it tough for wedding photos, unfortunately. Plan accordingly!

Deal off to bring Crif Dogs to the former Billy's Antiques space

Crif Dogs will not be selling its wares from the former Billy's Antiques space on East Houston at Elizabeth Street, we learned this morning. Crif Dogs partner Brian Shebairo confirmed that the deal is dead. And he is mighty pissed about it. More on that in a moment.

Shehairo planned to park the Crifmobile at this lot and open a more-permanent space with outdoor tables and chairs, as Grub Street first reported on April 1. The space has sat empty since Billy Leroy put away the giant tent in March 2012. Plans for a new two-story building on the lot have never materialized.

Shebairo, who opened the flagship shop on St. Mark's Place in 2001, was working on a deal with landlord Goldman Properties. However, that deal died yesterday when Goldman reps said that they'd like Shebairo to turn the space back over to them in September and October for a Kenneth Cole-sponsored arts event where the homeless could receive free needles and condoms.

This revelation from Goldman came after Shebairo spent two months working on the proposal, incurring costly lawyer fees in the process.

"I'm so annoyed," Shebairo said on the phone this morning. "I jumped through hoops to make this happen with them leading me along the whole time. I think they wanted me to come in to clean the space for them then give it back in the prime season so they could work with Kenneth Cole."

The proposal inadvertently ended up on this month's Community Board 2 agenda — before Shebairo had time to do any neighborhood outreach. After the item appeared on the docket, he learned that NoHo power-broker Zella Jones was dead against the idea of someone peddling hot dogs with a full-liquor license on that corner.

Shebairo said that he sat down with Jones during a recent four-hour meeting at Saxon + Parole. By the end of the meal, he had agreed to a host of stipulations, including only serving beer and closing by 10 p.m. He said that he had her blessing, which goes a really long way in that neighborhood.

Apparently Shebairo could of had a much smaller presence during the two-month Cole event. As one Goldman rep apparently told him, "Brian, we're going to make you famous."

Said Shebairo: "It was a kick in the fucking face. I don't know how Kenneth Cole is going to make me famous."

He has all the proper permits for the year ready for the Crifmobile, and he could legally just park it by the empty lot if he wanted to.

"I thought it was kind of a cool idea," he said with a sigh, "a creative use of the space."

Someone stole the horns off the Billy's Antiques sign

Billy Leroy told us last night that someone swiped the horns off the Billy's Antiques sign on Houston at the Bowery...

"Kinda blows," he said.

So keep your eyes out for these...

The big tent came down here earlier this year... a new Billy's may be back at this corner... Meanwhile, Billy is busy with "Baggage Battles" on the Travel Channel.

Sales continue outside Billy's Antique's

Well, you know that Billy's Antique's & Props closed up at the beginning of the year... Still, you can, on occasion, find the crew out front selling various odds and ends. Like earlier today. Here, Billy Leroy and Sugar-Bear discuss the finer points of selling a Lincoln hubcap.

Why some people think Billy Leroy is dead

As you know, Billy's Antiques and Props as we know it is gone over on Houston near the Bowery... the former home of Billy's tent is drawing some curious onlookers... many of whom believe that Billy himself died.... helped, in part, by that missing s in the homemade RIP Billy sign... (it should read "RIP Billy's")

... not to mention the workers on the scene who may be playing along with the death rumor ... In any event, the casket lying in state, as BoweryBoogie put it, continues to draw curious onlookers...

Perhaps this will become the next stop on the Dead Apple Tours...

Billy's big-top tent comes down this weekend; here's a last look inside

By now you probably know that Billy's Antiques on Houston at the Bowery has closed to make way for a two-story brick building... (Billy says that he will return!)

The iconic tent is coming down this weekend... Here's a last look inside the tent ...

Actually, you'll be able to take a look inside yourself starting tomorrow night at 7...

From the news release that is making the rounds...

After nearly three decades in business the infamous Tent housing Billy's Antiques and Props on Bowery and Houston will be taken down forever. Shop owner Billy Leroy, Proprietor Tony Goldman of Goldman Properties and the filmmakers behind "Dirty Old Town" a feature narrative that prefigured this moment, have come together to host a final farewell celebration. The evening will be hosted by renown New York writer and personality Anthony Haden Guest, featuring a line-up of eulogists and performers...

On the next day, Saturday, March 10th at 3pm, the tent will begin itʼs first phase of demolition. The tarps and fabric, enduring over 30 years of New York weather, both cultural and environmental, will be taken down forever. In a gothic burial ceremony, the “Flesh” of the tent will be peeled from the skeletal “Bones” of the structure and placed in a coffin. The coffin will be paraded around the block by pallbearers, while a funeral march is strummed by guitarist and tent-matriarch Lorraine Leckie. The coffin will be chained to the inside fence, and the remaining hollow structure will be painted fire-engine red in the days to follow. This theatrical end was the brain-child of landlord Tony Goldman, Leroy and filmmaker Jenner Furst...

Going out in style...

Meanwhile, you can catch Billy on the Travel Channel starting April 11...

'The last great free piece from Billy's'

On Friday, Billy Leroy put this solid walnut breakfront cabinet out for anyone to take. As of early this afternoon, it was still there, surprisingly well-preserved after a weekend of weather.

"It's the last great free piece from Billy's," he told us.

Billy's is now closed here on Houston near the Bowery for the next year or so to make way for a new two-story structure.

What's left outside Billy's Antiques...

Oh, a little bit ago we walked by Billy's Antiques on Houston at the Bowery... just to take a look. Billy's is now closed for the next year or so while a new, two-story structure goes up here, replacing the tent... (Billy's will return to this space.)

The tent is still up... and we spotted this a few feet to the east of the property...

The final countdown at Billy's Antiques

Yesterday, Billy Leroy and Jesse the manager removed the painting done of Leroy "back in the day" ... the store is closing Jan. 1. The iconic tent here on Houston at the Bowery is coming down to make way for a new two-level building. Billy's Antiques will return to the new structure when construction is complete.

Billy's Antiques closing on Jan. 1 for the next 10-12 months

As The New York Times reported on Dec. 5, the iconic tent that houses Billy's Antiques on Houston at the Bowery is coming down to make way for a two-story brick building. Billy's will be moving back into the new structure. BoweryBoogie got the scoop that the tent will come down on Jan. 1.

We asked Billy for a few more details... He figures it will take about 10 to 12 months for the work to happen on the site... but he did confirm that Billy's will remain at the location. (Previously, Billy told us that the brick for the new structure is coming from an old factory in Massachusetts.)

And what will Billy do in the interim?

"I am a co-host on a new Antiques Reality show called 'Baggage Battles' on Travel Channel. We have already filmed two episodes in Miami and London," he said. "I got the part out of 60 Antique Dealers. The pay is decent and who knows — America might really dig Bowery Billy. Or might not?"

More on the new home for Billy's Antiques

We heard the news this morning via The New York Times that Billy's Antiques will be losing its tent as the site will become home to a new two-story building. So we asked Billy Leroy about his future place of business there on Houston and the Bowery.

"I've seen the plans. It's going to be old brick imported from an old factory in Massachusetts. The will be four arched, giant doorways of metal and glass," Billy said via email. "Tony Goldman my landlord has really good taste and he is doing it right or I would not be taking a spot in the new building."

As for the space for the mural at Houston and the Bowery: It will remain, Billy said.
