A few more details on the East Houston condoplosion

The New York Times yesterday checked in with a piece on the luxury boom along the East Houston Horridor Corridor...

East Houston was once dotted with gas stations, parking areas and weedy lots.

And now? Let's ask developer Ben Shaoul, who's putting in the Katz's-adajecent condos at 196 Orchard St.

“It’s evolving into more of a luxury neighborhood from a grungy neighborhood,” Mr. Shaoul said. “But it’s still a very cool, very hip spot.”

The article offers more details on the million-dollar condos coming to 287 E. Houston St. between Clinton and Suffolk.

For starters, the development is a joint project between "Hogg Holdings and Vinci Partners USA, a firm with a Brazilian parent company that is undertaking its first American project."

Likewise, the master baths will have marble slabs or tiles on every surface but the ceiling. Originally, [Vinci rep Jose Antonio] Grabowsky said, the stone was to be deployed much less extensively.

Other features of the apartments include floor-to-ceiling windows, in a building that will stand above most of the surrounding blocks, courtesy of a 2008 rezoning that allowed taller structures on major streets and avenues.

Report: Woman, 73, killed by M14D on East Houston

A woman died after being hit by an MTA bus as it passed Columbia Street and East Houston this morning around 9:45 a.m., according to published reports.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was 73, according to ABC-7. None of the passengers on the M14D were apparently injured. The investigation continues.

Updated 5:30 p.m.

Streetsblog has more details on the deadly collision.

Anna Colon, 73, was crossing East Houston Street north to south at around 9:50 a.m. when the driver, who was also southbound, hit her while turning left from Avenue D onto East Houston, according to NYPD.

And...

East Houston at Avenue D is a wide two-way street with concrete medians in the crosswalks. Drivers injured 15 people walking at the intersection between 2009 and 2015, and had injured one other person there this year as of August, according to city crash data.

Residents told the Daily News that this intersection is dangerous.

“I feel afraid every time I cross that corner. I hold my breath and keep an eye out for a bus," said Rosalind Collazo, 49. “The buses go fast and don't stop. It's not the buses, the cars go fast too. They do U-turns when they are not supposed to.”

Colon had nine children, according to the Daily News.

Resurfacing East Houston

Crews were out last night (and early this morning) putting down new asphalt on East Houston … from Norfolk to Orchard … EVG readers Gacin and Jonathan shared these photos from the blessed event that is just one part of the ongoing East Houston Street Corridor Reconstruction that began in 1891…

BoweryBoogie asked a good question: What’s the over/under on when the jackhammers appear to tear up the road anew?

Random new bench randomly arrives on East Houston and the Bowery

[Bobby Williams]

Swear that this wasn't here on Tuesday... anyway! Perfect for sitting and watching diners on the DBGB sidewalk cafe ... or taking in the ongoing Bowery/East Houston Street reconstruction project. Not sure which one is more fun!

Have you seen the glass tower in the works for Lafayette and East Houston?

So there are BIG plans in place for the busy instersection of Lafayette and East Houston. The property owner has designs on demolishing the bar Puck Fair (ever been? I haven't) and the BP station, as DNAinfo first reported on Monday.

Plans for the 7-story, 60,000-square-foot office-retail space were unveiled Monday night during Community Board 2's landmarks committee meeting, as reported by Curbed.

Here we go.

And! An upclose view...

I just fell off the rendering's balcony.

There are still a lot of hurdles to get this through city planning and all that. Read the details at Curbed and DNAinfo.

Anyway, if it all works out, then these new tenants will have the best views of the Calvin Klein billboard — and its rotating batch of ballsacks and boobs — in the city...

A Royal corner of the East Village

During the weekend, Chico worked on a new Kate-William mural on Houston at Avenue B. (See our pictures from Saturday here.)

Chico was finishing up the mural yesterday afternoon...

As BoweryBoogie noted in his coverage yesterday, Harlem-based liquor depot Branson B. Champagne is sponsoring the mural, which will only be up for three weeks.

The new murals replaces the Loisaidas album art...

Fourteen years earlier, Chico memorialized William's mother here on the same corner...
