St. Mark's Place now free of this mobile boiler

[Then]

And in posts that we didn't get around to posting this past week... the mobile boiler that had been sitting outside 56 St. Mark's Place between First Avenue and Second Avenue has finally left the block...

[Now]

Seems as if the temp boiler was sitting there for years. Several readers on the block had complained about it — mostly because it wasn't even hooked up to the building for the longest time.

City records show that the permit for a new boiler was approved back in June.

Addiction NYC space for rent on St. Mark's Place

For rent signs recently arrived at 18 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Now the tenant, Addiction NYC, the tattoo parlor and smoke shop, is closing. There are sales...

The business, on the block since 2003, was previously across the street at No. 27. They moved in March 2017.

No. 18 had been on the retail market since November ($158 per square foot!). Per the listing:

• The block is trending with new exciting retail with new building development on the corner in the near future.

• Access to high density student & younger population. Cannot miss on this block!

Meanwhile, I already know what everyone is thinking about for this retail space: BRING BACK CHERRIES! (RIP 2011)

Mobile police lights arrive on St. Mark's Place

As you may have noticed, the NYPD has set up mobile lights outside 19-25 St Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Steven shared these photos from Friday night...

It's not immediately clear why the the NYPD placed the lights here. Typically the lights arrive after a highly publicized incident. For instance, in October 2018, the NYPD set up a light tower on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Second Avenue after several published reports about the growing number of increasingly unruly travelers/crusties gathering on the sidewalk.

The sidewalk bridge has been up here for what, two to three years? Readers have noted a menacing undercurrent at times here.

Both businesses on the lower level here are closed, making it an appealing spot to gather without any repercussions from store management. St. Mark's Market vacated the premises back in October. Mi Tea next door is currently closed for renovations. Also, upstairs tenant Chipotle shut down in August 2018. A new restaurant is going in to the space in the months ahead.

After 10 days, Bertie is found alive and well on St. Mark's Place

On Oct. 19, author Ada Calhoun's parents, longtime residents of 53 St. Mark's Place, were displaced by a fire in their apartment here between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Her parents, Peter Schjeldahl and Brooke Alderson, escaped in their pajamas and bare feet at 2 a.m. A firefighter found their cat Theo. However, their other cat Bertie was missing.

They feared that he was dead. Many friends and neighbors kept an eye out for him on the block and nearby streets.

Then yesterday, Bertie turned up in a neighbor's closet downstairs.

"Apparently, he had been hiding expertly in the building and living on toilet water and mice," Ada wrote in an email. "He is skinny, but otherwise healthy and in good spirits."

As for the apartment, the unit is uninhabitable and will be for at least six months, Ada said. They were able to secure a furnished sublet in the East Village.

"It was important to them to stay in the neighborhood. They moved to that apartment 46 years ago, and have never wanted to live anywhere else!"

Dog-gone: Kimomi Pet opening on St. Mark's Place

Signage arrived yesterday for Kimomi Pet at 22 St. Mark's Place. This is said to be an actual pet store (and not, say, a bubble tea shop) opening soon on the block between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

The Kimomi Pet owners also ran the previous business here — Chi Snack Shop, which moved to a larger retail space a few storefronts away at 4 St. Mark's Place, as reported here.

We'll post more details about Kimomi Pet once we have them.

Lastly, dog signage on St. Mark's Place has gotten more subtle since the glory days of Spots' Cafe in 2009...

Fake AdAge

Here's another fake ad in the ongoing "A Presidential Parody" series via Maia Lorian and Abe Lincoln Jr.

King Kong alive on St. Mark's Place

Here's a work-in-progress look at a King Kong mural going up on St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue (adjacent to David's Cafe) ... Steven spotted @moi.ny at work today...

This will be the second King Kong mural for the neighborhood (the other is via Dragon76 on 13th Street at First Avenue)...

He hopes to have the King Kong skyline completed by the end of the day tomorrow. @moi.ny also painted the Wu Tang logo on the other side of David's...

Updated 10/28

Here's the final work...

Updated 10/30

Someone thought it would be cool to put some dicks on it and vandalize the mural...

More bubble tea for the Bubble Tea District (aka St. Mark's Place)

Signage arrived yesterday at 19-23 St. Mark's Place for Mi Tea...

This will be the fourth U.S. outpost for the Hangzhou, China-based chain with 1,000 locations worldwide. Their speciality: Himalayan pink salted cheese tea drinks.

And they'll have plenty of competition on this block between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Other nearby options include Nohohon Matcha NYC, Spot Dessert Bar, Kung Fu Tea and CoCo Fresh Tea & Juice.

This storefront was previously Kulture, the tattoo-piercings-jewelry-smoke shop, which moved east several storefronts to the upper level of No. 31 in January.

Kulture arrived here in in 2011. Previously, the space was the short-lived St. Mark's Cafe, Red Mango, Quizno's and, until June 2008, the CBGB shop...
