2 Bros. back open; Nino's 2.0 closed again

One of the 2 Bros. on St. Mark's Place that closed after a nearby fire in September is back open... this is the one that sells the $1.50 "supreme" slice...

And down on St. Mark's Place, weirdness continues at Nino's 2.0 at Avenue A. Reopened. Closed. Reopened. Now closed again...

Joey Pepperoni brings his $1 slice to IHOP Way

Well, that Joey Pepperoni $1 sliceria went up quickly at the former AT&T store here on East 14th Street just west of Second Avenue...

And this is the second JPP in the East Village ... with the one opening on First Avenue near East 13th Street in August. And this may be a record for turning over a storefront. One day it was empty, the next day it's a fully functioning pizza place. Not bad considering it usually takes the city about 7 weeks to show up and inspect a hand sink.

Anyway. Game on.

You've been put on notice, Nicoletta!

Haha. Kidding!

But seriously — has anyone tried JPP's? (And if you answer, then I promise to never refer to it again as JPP's.) Was curious how it compared to 2 Bros. or any other $1 or $1.50 slices... Or cardboard?

[Thanks to EVG reader Tony for the tip on the opening]

zpizza opening on First Avenue, finally

A branch of the zpizza franchise is opening here on First Avenue at East Second Street ... BoweryBoogie noted this impending arrival back on Dec. 23, 2010... but there was never much more activity in this former Cafe Rama space...

This will be the Laguna Beach, Calif.-based company's second NYC location... right there with Terminal 4 at JFK...

New to zpizza (like us!)? Here's some info via a zpizza blog:

Our dough is made from certified organic wheat flour prepared fresh every day, hand-thrown and fire-baked until uniquely crisp. We combine select ingredients such as certified organic tomato sauce, part-skim rBGH-free cheese from grass-fed cows, MSG-free pepperoni, and additive-free sausage. Even our fresh produce sets us apart. The same holds true for our gourmet salads and sandwiches. That said we hope you enjoy our unique and authentic recipes as much as we enjoy making them for you.

Joey Pepperoni now selling his $1 slice on First Avenue

An EVG reader tells us that Joey Pepperoni's Pizza is now open (festive balloon alert!) on First Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street... If you try it, then let us know how it is. Or, if you don't try it, then let us know what you think it is like ...

Joey Pepperoni bringing his $1 pizza to First Avenue

A branch of Joey Pepperoni's Pizza is opening here on First Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street... (this space was most recently Ikura Sushi...) There are a few Joey Pepperoni locations around the city... Midtown Lunch reviewed the $1 cheese slice at the Tribeca outpost.

The verdict: This was a good piece of pizza, and when you add in the $1 price tag it’s kind of amazing. The crust was really crisp and the cheese plentiful and slightly browned in spots.

And what's the verdict on the Joey Pepperoni mascot?

And the space next to Joey P's is for rent too...

Wall Street Journal investigates St. Mark's Place Supreme Slice 'experiment;' wither $1 pizza?

The Wall Street Journal today looks at the new $1.50 SUPREME Slice that 2 Bros. Plus is selling at 36 St. Mark's Place ... a few storefronts away from where they sell the $1 slice...

To the article!

According to Eli Halali, who owns the 2 Bros. Pizza chain with his brother, the 50% price hike is an experiment to gauge customer reaction to a larger and higher-quality slice.

And!

If successful, Mr. Halali said the chain would consider adding the Supreme Slice at some of its other locations, in addition to keeping the $1 slice. He stressed that the $1 slice was in no way in jeopardy.

And!

The Supreme Slice is cut from a 22-inch pie, versus the normal 18 inches. The sauce is different, made with plum Italian tomatoes; and the baking process is longer and more involved, said Mr. Halali.

And how does that Supreme Slice taste compared with the non-supreme slice? Said one customer, No difference. "I don't expect great taste for $1 and I don't expect better taste for $1.50."

Final preparations at Nicoletta, opening tonight at 5

At Nicoletta, the new pizza place on Second Avenue and East 10th Street... workers are scrambling to have the place up and ready ....

...for the grand opening tonight...

For sneak previews, check out Eater and Grub Street and Serious Eats ...

(A few Eater commenters noted that the interior looks like a T.G.I. Friday's...)

If you go, then let us know how it is... because, to be honest, we'll likely never step foot in the place...

Meanwhile, thoughtless construction equipment ruins a perfectly good pizza on Avenue A

A reader notes the following this morning in front of (a surprisingly clean-looking) 100 Avenue A...

One of the pieces of equipment the workers are using on the (gas?) main repair on Sixth and A made a special delivery...

Not sure which came first — the pizza or the wheel.

A Nicoletta for every window

Just noting that the signs are in the window now for Nicoletta, the incoming, high-endish pizzeria on Second Avenue at 10th Street ...

The place reportedly opens Friday, per Diner's Journal...

Details from Diner's Journal on Thursday:

[Chef Michael White] will serve 12- and 16-inch pies to eat in or take out. The tables in the restaurant, a high-ceilinged box in wood and brick with 62 seats inside and 38 on the sidewalk, are fitted with little metal sockets in which the stems of cantilevered pizza stands are placed, so a pizza does not take up table space.

Last month, CB3 OK'd a sidewalk cafe totaling 17 tables and 37 seats split between Second Avenue and 10th Street. Expect a mob out there this summer.

Bite Me Best looks awfully closed on Avenue C

This past weekend, Bobby Williams took photos of work/renovation happening at Bite Me Best pizza on Avenue C near East Ninth Street...

...and yesterday, things at the always-reliable pizzeria looked more ominous, as this photo by Andrew Adam Newman on Ave C shows... the signs are gone, and it looks rather stripped...

The phone number has been disconnected. Perhaps this was inevitable with the new (seemingly always crowded) 99-cent pizza place opening up across the way in January ...

2 photos of former East Village pizzerias

Pizza Week is wrapping up over at Eater... and one of their features — Old Photos of New York City Pizzerias.

Among the photos: Village Inn Pizza on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place circa 1979...

Which reminded of a photo I saw a few weeks ago at Neighborhoodr: Tito's Pizzeria on the corner of Second Avenue and 12th Street in 1965...

At the site of the current City Cinemas Village East...

The Tito's photo came via urban metaphysics.

Find all of Eater's Pizza Week stuff here.

Michael White now hiring at Nicoletta

Yesterday, we took a look at the incoming Michael White pizzeria on Second Avenue at 10th Street ...

Anyway, a reader sent us a link to a Craigslist ad ... apparently, if you're interested, they're hiring front-of-the-house positions... Per Craigslist: "Focused on pizza and Italian cuisine, we are seeking staff to share in our love of food, passion for service, and desire to develop a new brand offering the highest levels of quality, hospitality and professionalism."

Bonus ad except for host/hostess: "Able to multitask while remaining calm and hospitable."

Let's take a quick look inside Michael White's new pizzeria on Second Avenue

We walked by that incoming Michael White pizzeria on Second Avenue at 10th Street yesterday ...

...the plywood is down on the side... (see the first comment — a commenter said there was never any plywood...)

...and the anti-blogger shield hasn't been activated...

Anyway, here's what one portion of the interior is looking like these days...

Per Diner's Journal, Nicoletta's pizzas "will be baked in a gas-fired brick oven but would be 'different, crisper' thanks to both his technique and a flour that is lower in protein."

Nicoletta is on this month's CB3/SLA docket for a sidewalk cafe...

Here's your Proto's Pizza signage; and no $1 slices

Sign is up now at Proto's Pizza, where Enzo's was on Second Avenue between Third Street and Second Street... Enzo's closed last May...

Neighborhoodr has more on the incoming pizzeria:

The owner’s first go at a pizza place. Aims to hit the sweet spot of offering a high-quality slice for around $2.50. No dollar slices here. "I'd rather go out of business than have to compromise quality. You’re in New York. Do it right," says Mr. Proto, a Brooklyn native.

As you can see, coming soon to where Enzo's was between Third Street and Second Street... Enzo's closed last May... dunno much about Proto's... (found a Proto's in Boulder, Colo.)

Breaking: That 99-cent pizza place now open on Avenue C

And doing brisk business, Dave on 7th notes... We wrote about the place between Ninth Street and 10th Street back here.

Exclusive first look at the F&F 99 Cent Slice Pizza place menu on Avenue C

The other day, we pointed out that a new 99-cent slice joint was opening on Avenue C between Ninth Street and 10th Street... As far as we can tell, the place will be called F&F 99 Cent Slice Pizza...

Anyway! Dave on 7th took a look inside... And look at the menu... the pizza is 99 cents! Or, two slices and a soda or bottle of water for $2.75....

As their slogan says, "Eat Hot Always." Wasn't that the name of a Van Halen song?

First sign of Michael White's fancy new pizza place on Second Avenue

The pizzasphere was buzzing back in November when the news broke that Michael White, who apparently causes chow chubbies with his fare at places like Marea and Ai Fiori, is opening a pizzeria called Nicoletta on Second Avenue at 10th ... the former Cafe Centosette, which closed in April.

Yesterday, blue glass noted that workers erected the pizzawood ...

(Grub Street heard the rumors about a Whiteout here going back to September.)
