Hole lotta love: Checking in on the just-repaired 6th Street sinkhole

Here's a look at the now-former tree-pit sinkhole outside 338 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

As noted on Friday, city crews finally filled in the four-plus-month-old hole...

Breaking! (so to speak): City finally repairing 6th Street sinkhole

Well! 

A city crew is on the scene this morning to make repairs on the tree-pit sinkhole outside 338 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Goggla shared the above photo and noted the work in progress.

As we've noted many times previously: The sinkhole formed during the drenching rains from Tropical Storm Ida on Sept. 1.

Since then, a makeshift barrier including parts of Awash's outdoor dining space and other found objects have been guarding/blocking the sidewalk. Pedestrians had to walk on Sixth Street on the south side of the street to bypass the sinkhole. The sinkhole claimed the tree here in early December. 

No word on why it took four-plus months to have this repaired ... even with numerous residents calling this in to 311 and other various city agencies.

The sidewalk- and tree pit-eating hole outside 338 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue has apparently claimed a victim — the small tree that was in the pit.

Several EVG readers have noted this latest development here in recent days... 

It's not known if, perhaps, workers removed the tree ahead of repair work ... or someone else decided to cut it down.

Several residents have told us that they have contacted 311, Community Board 3, Councilmember Carlina Rivera's office, the DOT, the 9th Precinct, etc., to report the sinkhole — and the swastikas someone added to the barrier a few weeks back.

In early October, we bid farewell for the time being to the sinkhole on Fifth Street and First Avenue. 

The former sinkhole has been receiving ample attention in the past week. (Thanks Eden for the initial tip!) 

The intersection here at Rite Aid Way now has steel plates covering the new subterranean cavern. Goggla shared the top pic today, still life with a shovel and leaves but no workers or utility vehicles in sight... 

Meanwhile, the Sixth Street sinkhole with the swastikas remains in a sinking state.

Hello again, old friend: Sinkhole reforming in Tompkins Square Park

A sinkhole is starting to form again in Tompkins Square Park ... just inside the entrance at Eighth Street and Avenue B, as EVG regular Salim notes with these photos... it has been in the making now for a few weeks, getting larger, hungrier... 

This is at the site of a trashcan-swallowing sinkhole that enthralled the community a few of us during the summer of 2017. That particular in-progress sinkhole kept this entrance closed for nearly two months during that Summer of the Sinkhole.

Farewell (for now!) to the sinkhole on 1st Avenue at 5th Street

City crews were at the intersection of First Avenue and Fifth Street today... to fill in the sinkhole that had continued to grow and flourish here in recent weeks ... (thanks to James Rogala for the photo!)

Someone called the police about the 6th Street sinkhole

The heavy rains that Tropical Storm Ida brought on Sept. 1 caused a large sinkhole to form in the tree pit and sidewalk outside 338 E. Sixth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue. (Previously: de Blasio Spider Hole.)

Yesterday, one month to the date that the sinkhole formed, someone called the police about the situation. The report showed up on the Citizen app...

We did receive confirmation that a squad car arrived on the scene... and apparently, the officers called this in to whatever city agency would need to get here to fix this.

Checking up on the sinkhole here on First Avenue at Fifth Street (last post here)... definitely gaining conversation-starter status...

Goggla points out this sunshiny sinkhole that is under development here on First Avenue at Fifth Street ... will likely stay this way unless it tries to swallow an NYPD vehicle making the turn here to the 9th Precinct midblock on Fifth Street.

Branding the tree pit sinkhole on 6th Street

As noted earlier this month, the heavy rains that Tropical Storm Ida produced caused a tree pit sinkhole on Sixth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue ... there's a partial sidewalk collapse as well outside Awash at No. 338.

The sidewalk is awaiting repairs... in the meantime, someone recently decided to brand this spot — welcome to the di [sic] Blasio Spider Hole!

This is outside 338 E. Sixth St. (Awash Ethiopian Restaurant — try the shiro wat! — is the retail tenant) ... Not sure when this happened — during the Ida downpour on Wednesday night?

Mid-afternoon sinkhole watch

Several readers (thank you!) have been keeping tabs on the new budding sinkhole on Avenue A at Fifth Street... it has evolved these past few days to its current triangulated status with the ConEd cones. 

A few days earlier, someone thoughtfully fashioned a bridge for the sinkhole made from a discarded cabinet door...

The city repaved this section of Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B on July 13.

Sinkholes forming in the freshly repaired intersection on 1st Avenue and 7th Street

Last Wednesday night and Thursday morning, DEP crews repaired the ruptured water main on First Avenue and Seventh Street — the second such break in a week. 

Now just a few days later, a tipster points out two budding sinkholes in the intersection...

Hopefully none of this leads to another disruption for nearby residents or businesses ... the water that gushed for several hours from the broken main last Wednesday night flooded basements along Seventh Street between First Avenue and Avenue A.

2nd Street post the big sinkhole swallow

As previously noted, a sinkhole opened up on Second Street between Avenue A and First Avenue late Saturday night... nearly swallowing a parked (and empty!) SUV in the process.

While the block is open to through westbound traffic, a large Con Ed presence remains on the scene...









A cause was never made public. Residents had said there was a sewage problem on the block leading up to the sinkhole's arrival.

Sinkhole nearly swallows SUV on 2nd Street

Shortly after 1 a.m., a sinkhole opened on Second Street between Avenue A and First Avenue... nearly swallowing an SUV that had been parked on the south side of the roadway...



According to a report on the Citizen app, firefighters at the scene stated that the SUV was resting on a gas line.

As of this morning, the van had been removed... Con Ed and DEP workers have the street blocked off as repairs are underway...

Per the Daily News:

Neighbors nearby complained that sinkhole was caused by an ongoing sewage problem. A few basements nearby the incident were flooded and still had standing water in them on Sunday morning.

“I’m telling everyone in our building not to flush their toilets because it backs up into our basement,” said John von Hartz, 87, who lives nearby and woke up to city workers trying to access the sewage line in his basement.

There wasn't any immediate cause for the sinkhole, per the DEP.

Budding sinkhole of the day

A traffic cone marks the spot... or else it was provided as a sacrifice. We hear that the sinkhole's inner core has a temperature of 5505 °C, though that hasn't been confirmed.

2nd Avenue sinkhole alert

There is a sinkhole in the works on Second Avenue between Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place (thanks to Chris Rowland for the photo!)... right in the bike lane (perhaps this is why the city still has't repainted the bike path after the milling and paving earlier last month?)

Be mindful if you are walking, riding, stomping or using the LinkNYC kiosk right there.
