Jeremiah first brought news last month of Hype Lounge, former home of Daphne's Hibiscus Restaurant on 14th Street near Second Avenue.... There's plenty of work happening in the space...



And the sign out front offers a few more details of what to expect come October:

In case you haven't seen "On the Bowery" yet, then you still have some time: The Film Forum has extending the 1956 classic's run through Tuesday.

I saw it, and, like a dork, took photos of the signage.

Anyway!

Here's what New York's David Edelstein had to say about it this week ... "'On the Bowery' is the most important movie playing in New York: a window to the past, a dark glass on the present."

(I think he meant to write: "... the most important movie playing in New York NOT called "The Expendables." Woo!)

Back in April, we told you about the year-long renovations coming to 325 E. 10th St. across from Tompkins Square Park....



Well, this may be a record... the scaffolding came down yesterday ... and 20 of those renovated apartments have hit the market .... starting at $2,000 for studios and up to $4,200 for two-bedroom pads...

Recession not over until Vanessa's says it is

The big news yesterday... those party animals at The National Bureau of Economic Research said that the recession ended in June 2009.

My ass.

It's not over. You know why? Because the "recession special" sign is still up at Vanessa's Dumplings on 14th Street near Third Avenue....




The Vanessa's sign has been up since the fall of 2008... when it comes down, then we'll know the recession is really over.

I suggest that the fine folks at The National Bureau of Economic Research start eating some dumplings in the meantime.

Roastown Coffee coming to Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place

Just repeating this from last evening... at the former Pizzanini space at St. Mark's Place and Second Street... a little something to compete with the Starbucks on the next block... or Mud just on Ninth Street.... or Porto Rico .... or Cafe Mocha on Second Avenue and Seventh Street or...

At Motorino, waiting for a table, watching a woman vomit out the front window

Food writer Jordan Zucker shared this anecdote on her blog Oxtails, Cocktails, and Rock Tales.

Her party ended up at Motorino on 12th Street and had a short wait for a table this past Thursday evening.

Then!

While we were waiting, a girl sitting at the open window table, turned to face the street and puked all over the side walk. Twice. The party then got up and left. The restaurant cleared the table and welcomed us to it. I explained what had happened and requested a hose down of the adjacent street. Apparently she had just done a number on the bathroom as well. Once they finished cleaning that, the sidewalk was next.

Despite all that, she liked Motorino.

Why Casa Adela is temporarily shuttered

Here at Casa Adela on Avenue C between Fourth Street and Fifth Street....



... per the sign: "Not having the refrigerator at appropriate temperature."



I appreciate the transparency here... Some of these DOH violations can seem pretty ticky-tacky... better to let customers-neighbors-bloggers know...

Of course, I'm not sure what my counsel would be for more serious offenses.... "XYZ Restaurant will reopen as soon as we kill off the 350 rats the DOH found in the walk-in pantry!"

By the way, if you've never been Casa Adela, you should give it try when she reopens...
