According to published reports, the NYPD arrested some 150 people last night at the site of the "Gaza Solidarity Encampment" that a few dozen NYU students set up early yesterday morning at Gould Plaza on the school's main campus.
The numbers at the encampment grew to several hundred during the day.
As the Associated Press reported: "The school said it warned the crowd to leave, then called in the police after the scene became disorderly and the university said it learned of reports of 'intimidating chants and several antisemitic incidents.'"
Officers in riot gear began making arrests around 8:30 p.m., per media accounts and bystanders.

Those arrested included students and faculty.

"It's a really outrageous crackdown by the university to allow the police to arrest students on our own campus,” NYU law student Byul Yoon told the AP. "Antisemitism is never ok. That's absolutely not what we stand for and that's why there are so many Jewish comrades that are here with us today."
NYU's independent student newspaper, Washington Square News, reported that after the arrests, some 100 people protested outside 1 Police Plaza.

Meanwhile, at Columbia, the university's campus "has become the epicenter of the unrest in the U.S.," per Axios.

I support anyone who chooses to protest peacefully, but there must be a level of decorum where others aren't physically injured and threatened. Perhaps there were too many people in attendance and an inadequate police presence which caused this ruckus. The NYPD only added more fuel to the fire, which isn't ideal for this type of situation. NYU did release a statement where they did contact the authorities fearing for everyone's safety. My heart breaks for Palestine and Israel. We are truly witnessing mass genocide on a large scale with no immediate resolve or ceasefire. I admire the plight of many of these individuals whom are simply fighting for peace. Kudos to EV Grieve regular for taking these photos. It is very brave to place yourself in the middle of this chaos.
NYU calling NYPD caused the violence. Period.
I was there in the day and at night, the difference? NYU calling NYPD on faculty and students. That's when the violence began.
No one is safe unless we are all safe. NYPD does not make us safe.
Protest is meant as a disruption. It was a joyous and supportive affair.
Violence did not enter the picture until NYPD entered the equation.
Hmmm Genocide being committed? I dont know but MY eyes saw Genocide committed on October when 1250 CIVILIANS were massacred. Oh yeah I forgot to mention the TODDLERS and GERIATRICS that were kidnapped and are probably DEAD in Tunnls under Gaza.
I do not support calling in the NYPD to address a reasonably peaceful protest by students.
But I gotta ask - Is someone holding up a sign to show support for Nasser Abu Hmid? If that's the case, these are not people I could make common cause with.
Just because you go to college don’t
make you smart. It would be nice if
these rebels showed the same concern

election coming up this year and there is a

Sorry Dan, but nobody showing up from either side was joyous. Protests of this nature rarely are. To blame the NYPD is ridiculous. NOBODY wants to deal with you - pedestrians, pigeons, rats - you do none of us any favors.

The last time the national guard was sent in for college protests was during the Vietnam War, which resulted in the Kent State Massacre and Jackson State Massacre.

Anyone who wants the demonstrations (against genocide, by students) to be stopped by force would do well to imagine how vile and vindictive their actions will look in a decade or two.
These protests are not going to age well. Hamas is a terrorist organization that has control over the Palestinians. The war between Israel and Palestine is brutal but Hamas, funded by Iran, started this. That these protesting idiots are chanting "we are all hamas" and are aligning themselves with the terrorist organization who kidnapped, raped, and tortured Israelis at a music festival. They are adding terrorist sympathizer to their resumes. Good luck finding jobs.
