After being shot near the chess tables in Tompkins Square Park yesterday morning, one of the two victims, a 44-year-old male, entered the Avenue A Deli and Grill between Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place, seeking help before collapsing, according to witnesses and police sources.
EMTs took the man to Bellevue. He was out of surgery early last evening, though we have not heard an official update on his condition.
The deli was expected to reopen after crime scene investigators finished their work last night. (These photos are from 6 p.m.)
The shooting occurred around 9:45 a.m., just inside the 7th and A entrance to Tompkins Square Park. One of the victims, a man in his 70s, died from his wounds. Police sources have said the shooting was drug-related.
The suspect, who was seen in the area up to an hour before the shooting, ran toward Seventh Street and Avenue B after the gunfire. Police sources said he may have discarded the white gloves and hoodie he was wearing before fleeing.
The NYPD has not yet released an official description of the suspect.
The chess tables, a hot spot for criminal activity in recent years, will remain "closed until further notice," per an X post early yesterday afternoon from local City Councilmember Carlina Rivera...

The Seventh and A entrance to the Park was open early this morning, with access to the chess tables... crime scene tape remained up on the fences nearby...

As I recall, the other TSP shooter also cased the park first in hoodie, mask, and gloves (?)--if you see someone walking around dressed like that, best go home.

Yes, my advice is to avoid danger when there are clear signs of it. Imagine.
I'm middle-aged, dude. If you actually lived here in the 70s (sounds like someone posting from one of the lesser outer suburbs to me), and you think the cops always act right and know what they're doing, you literally should go see your doctor about your memory, because there's no other explanation. And if the cops knew immediately who this person was, they're letting a guy who killed a 71-year-old run around free. That would be some protection.
As for the rest: the NYPD, as it currently functions, is a jobs program primarily for undereducated (2 years college barely gets you above minimum wage in the private sector), violent white men. Nobody else wants them--they lack skills and basic diligence and self-control--and God forbid they have to earn an honest living like the rest of us. Sorry. I don't think the police *have* to be that way, I don't even think *all* of them are that way, but boot-licking doesn't help.

Regarding your assertion that the NYPD is primarily a jobs program for "violent white men" please note that per public City data, white people constitute 40 percent of the NYPD.
That is as a whole but among younger/newer NYPD, clearly white people are a smaller segment.
Perhaps suburbanites who watch tv assume that the NYPD is mostly the stereotypical old white cop - but actual NYC residents know that is not the situation
