Friday's parting shots

The car-free Open Streets of St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue is now ... open on the recently milled roadway.

We asked several city official-type folks about when the program was starting up this year, what the hours would be, etc., and we didn't get any concrete answers.

No one seemed to know what was going on...
We'll try to get some more answers in the days ahead...

Milling and paving crews are the same, they work on a specified area and then switch to paving equipment hence à delay until the job is completed

Open Streets started during the Covid emergency and was necessary then.
But unacceptable to continue - and where there are bus routes forcing bus detours.

The fact that DOT allows this on bus routes is truly unbelievable.
City insists people should use public transit- and then the City sabotages public transit.

No one ever knows what is " Going On"

Open streets = car free pedestrian zones …. along with increased outdoor dining is wonderful for our neighborhood. Impacts on public transportation and bus routes are minimal and far out weighted by the benefits to our neighborhood and the businesses and their employees.
The concept of “open streets” is not new to NYC and the EV. Worldwide, they are a common and beneficial to communities.

Open Streets allows only some restaurants to benefit - the restaurants located there.
That seems unfair.
What about other restaurants not located on Open Streets?

And if truly for pedestrian, then no bikes either.

In no way is this beneficial to the people that live on the block.

No one who lives on this block wants this. The restaurants are disrespectful to the tenants who have to deal with noise, filth, and a frat party. There was 2 places on the street with dried blood. What is this all about? No bus, no deliveries and a zoo going on all hours of the night! Reopen St Marks Place and give the tax paying residents back their lives!

I like open streets and look forward to it now every year. I would rather see people paying sales tax and tipping their waitstaff enjoying socializing in the space. rather than antisocial junkies loitering on the sidewalk and repelling anyone else from using the space. If you want to live in DTLA- no one is stopping you from moving there.

You obviously don’t live on the block. Let’s move this craziness to your street and we’ll see if you like it.
