The community fridge outside the Sixth Street Community Center is no more

Photos by Stacie Joy

The community fridge outside the Sixth Street Community Center between Avenue B and Avenue C has been removed.

According to a source familiar with the situation, the Department of Sanitation issued a violation related to the fridge, prompting NYCHA to remove it last week.
There are already calls for its return...
The One Love Community Fridge arrived here in November 2024 after the longstanding fridge outside Trinity Lower East Side on Ninth Street and Avenue B was dismantled.

Community fridges provide food around the clock, though keeping them clean and regularly monitored has been an ongoing challenge at the neighborhood locations EVG has covered.

With this removal, no community fridges are currently operating in the East Village.

If you are hungry, every public school offers bagged food. PS 19 is on 1st ave between 11th and 12th street.

Keeping shitty people who don't like to have to look at poor people and have no qualms about complaining about their existence in check has been an ongoing challenge, too.

Really? Even if you don't attend or have a child that attends? Do you have to show proof?

It's rough out there

It really sucks that NYCHA insisted it had to go. They weren't providing the power to it, there were people from NYCHA buildings who both benefited and shared food through it. I liked knowing that when I had food to share, I could take it there. And so many places around here helped to keep it stocked.

Likely a decision made by higher-ups at NYCHA who wondered why it had to justify absorbing fines for an "unauthorized" project. Frankly, as a former city worker (at NYCHA!), I'm surprised one city agency ticketed another but I don't know how bad things have gotten around the fridge. Perhaps neighbors complained. It's always pressure from the outside that gets these Community fridges shut down. The people who would benefit the most have to live through the vandalism committed by others.

No you cannot just go to any public school to get food. PS food is for the kids. Don’t send homeless people to my kids school thanks.
