After failing to attract a bar, 14 Avenue B is for rent. Again.

There's a long recent history at 14 Avenue B.... This has been a popular space for new bar concepts, most recently "Epic City Pub, the first gay pub in the East Village." CB3 has nixed various other concepts here between East Second Street and Houston, including a 3,000-square-foot bar/restaurant "with an occasional D.J." and the brewpub that borrowed the Prime Meats menu...

[2008]

Anyway! A new listing arrived at RKF yesterday:

COMMENTS
Dense residential neighborhood
Visible from Houston Street
Space can be easily vented
Interior features rustic brick walls
Selling Lower Level may be possible
Previous tenant had a Liquor License
Tenant Allowance available to finish Basement

No mention of rent. The last tenant here was the loathsome Butterfly, which closed in 2007.

The Urge aims to move to Avenue B

This month's CB3/SLA Licensing Committee meeting is coming up on Monday ... we continue to look at some of the applicants in advance of that meeting ...

• Urge (Prince 28 LLC), 14 Ave B (op)

This has been a popular space for applicants in recents years ... CB3 has shot down various concepts here between East Second Street and Houston, including a 3,000-square-foot bar/restaurant "with an occasional D.J." and the brewpub that borrowed the Prime Meats menu...

The applicant now is familiar to the East Village... The Urge, the gay bar/club currently residing at 31-33 Second Ave. ... Not much information on the application ... the space has an occupancy of 74... they plan to have DJs... and they're hoping for hours of 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. seven days a week, per the application. (Same hours as the current location.)

Not sure what's officially happening with their current space at 31-33 Second Ave., where Ben Shaoul is planning a three-story addition to the current building.

The meeting is 6:30 p.m. Monday in the usual place — JASA/Green Residence, 200 E. Fifth St. at Bowery.

[Updated] Discovery Wines opens today on Avenue B

Back in the late spring, Discovery Wine moved away from its home on Avenue A ... one of the businesses displaced with the arrival of Union Market... Discovery didn't travel too far — just to the southwest corner of Avenue B and Second Street.

According to the Discovery Wines site, the store will open today. (Updated, per a Discovery tweet — they'll open at 5.)

And this closes the chapter on 16 Avenue B...Previously, two different restaurant-club hybrids had tried to open a club restaurant at 14-16 Avenue B since the corner deli closed a few years ago. (As you may recall, one venture called for a 3,000 square foot Italian restaurant, catering company and lounge "with an occasional D.J.")

The stores displaced by Union Market now have new homes ... in addition to Discovery Wines, the Houston Deli & Grocery is opening on Second and A ... and Joyful Nail on Avenue A...

Coming to 14 Avenue B: East Village Brewery and Beer Shop

14 Avenue B is on tonight's CB3/SLA docket. (Read the CB3/SLA history of this space here.)

And the proprietors have outlined their very specific plans for 14 Avenue B with a letter and menu posted on the front door of the building. (By the way, as you may recall, Discovery Wines is moving next door to 16 Avenue B in the coming weeks.)

Here's the letter — not sure how well you can read it here...

"Our goal is to produce an in-house, award-winning craft beer to be consumed and sold on premises, complimented by a fine cocktail and wine selection paired with a foodie restaurant with a steak-based menu.

"We additionally plan to create a retail space similar to the Beer Room component of Whole Foods in order to offer craft beers and beer-related dry goods to neighborhood enthusiasts."

And here is their proposed menu...

Discovery Wines moving to Avenue B

Discovery Wines is one of the businesses that will be displaced with the arrival of Union Market this fall on Houston and Avenue A. Discovery's lease is up on May 31.

However, we've learned that the store won't be going too far. Tim at Discovery Wines confirmed that they signed a lease for 16 Avenue B at the corner of Second Street.

"We're leaving 10 Avenue A at the end of May and, if all goes as planned, then we'll hit the ground running in June at the 16 Avenue B space," Tim said via email.

And perhaps some neighbors will be relieved to hear this news. Previously, two different restaurant-club hybrids had tried to open another bar at 14-16 Avenue B. (As you may recall, one venture called for a 3,000 square foot Italian restaurant, catering company and lounge "with an occasional D.J.")

The space at 14 Avenue B apparently remains on the market. Nail salon perhaps?

After failing to land a club restaurant, landlord lobbies for a nail salon

Wow.

So, we've written plenty about 14-16 Avenue B at East Second Street ... where plans for a big club restaurant were shot down by CB3 (and, perhaps, for good reasons — one venture called for a 3,000 square foot Italian restaurant, catering company and lounge "with an occasional D.J.") ... first last February ... and later in September.

Anyway! Perhaps the landlord has given up the nightclub restaurant dream... check out the new listing for 16 Avenue B....

Look at what it's "perfect" for now... a nail salon!

Of course, it could also be a bar disguised as a nail shop... works nicely with barber shops...

14-16 Avenue B back on the market

Twice now plans for 14-16 Avenue B were shot down by CB3 (and, perhaps, for good reasons — one venture called for a 3,000 square foot Italian restaurant, catering company and lounge "with an occasional D.J.") ... first in February ... and later in September.

Now, someone else has a chance to give the space a whirl... the storefronts are back on the market.

The entire corner is going for $18,000.

Folks at Tower may want to update the listing too...

CB3 says no to monster bar on Avenue B; plus, good news for Blarney Cove fans

Speaking of bars... last night, Community Board 3 passed the docket from the Sept. 20 subcommittee meeting ... (The one item that we reported on from that meeting: No liquor license for Table 12 on Avenue A and 12th Street.)

A few items of note:

• Justified LLC, 102 1st Ave (alt/op/extend to backyard):

As we reported, the International Bar crew, Molly and Shawn, are taking over the Lilly Coogan's space down the way. CB3 approved the use of the backyard for seating. However, as part of the conditions, they must close the outdoor space by 10 every night — including any time needed for clean-up.

• Corp to be Formed, 14 Ave B (trans/op) (Butterfly Butterfly)

This is the newly ginormous space on the southwest corner of Second Street. The owners wanted to open a "restaurant tavern" ...with hours of operation from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Wednesday; from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday and Fridays; and Noon 'till 4 a.m. on Saturdays. And! They'd employ DJs Friday and Saturday nights.

History didn't help this space. Remember Butterfly? According to CB3, they had a history of citations for unlicensed security, unlicensed cabaret, unlicensed sidewalk cafe (was anything licensed?). You get the idea. The owner of the new space, in the eyes of CB3, has "failed to demonstrate that he has sufficient experience to operate a restaurant-bar of this size in this area or addressing any of the prevailing noise or traffic concerns." Plus! He was unwilling to close earlier than 2 a.m.

REJECT.

• Blarney Cove (510 E 14th Pub Inc), 510 E 14th St (op)

Remember the hyperlocal East Village blogger who nearly shit the bed about what might be happening with this? Fool!

This is a transfer from the Blarney Cove's now-deceased owner to his daughter-in-law. According to the CB3, the Blarney Cove will continue its current method of operation and retain its name.

OK!

What's next for Avenue B and Second Street?

We've been keeping an eye on the long-dormant corner of Avenue B and Second Street for some time now...

In February, the CB3/SLA denied a request for a 3,000-square-foot bar/restaurant "with an occasional D.J." In January, Rebecca Marx at Fork in the Road reported that Beltrami Foods, an Italian restaurant, will open here, owned and operated, in part, by Cristiano Morroy.

Work continues on this space... and whatever it is... is gonna be huge...

...and the disco ball is still up at the old Butterfuly space at 14 Avenue B!

I asked Morroy if he was still aiming for an eatery/bar here... Via a Facebook message, he wrote, "no, unfortunately... we decided not to open the space on ave B. Someone else is opening."

No word just yet on what the new owners have in mind... but we'll find out...
