A 2020 look at 24 2nd Ave., now with a high-end Mathieu Lehanneur showroom

From the posts-we-never-got-around-to-posting-in-2019 department, here's, perhaps, a last look at 24 Second Ave. (aka 32 E. First St.), the 10-story condoplex with ground-floor retail on site of a former BP gas station.

We've been documenting the building's progress these past four-plus years. As previously reported, the building features 30 condos. The building's website — "meticulous meets magnificence" — lists five units available for purchase, with prices ranging from $1.375 million to $3.625 million.

The marketing materials note that the residences were "inspired by a modern interpretation of Italian rationalist design, the living spaces are designed with sleek detailing and rich character with each corner and angle offering up a visual experience."

Also, that ballerina mural via French artist JR that went up on an adjacent building in December 2015 remains in view for the building's outdoor space. (Some units also have ballerina views.)

Meanwhile, signage for the Mathieu Lehanneur showroom arrived in early November ... it took multiple requests to several sources at the address to learn whether this was a full-time endeavor or merely a pop-up shop for the designer. (Apparently full time, though the showroom is by appointment only.)

These photos are from early November...

... and a view of the building from First Street from the same time...

The BP station closed in July 2014. This was the second-to-last gas station in the East Village, joined later by the Mobil station on Avenue C and East Houston in September 2014.

Checking in on the BP-replacing condoplex of 2nd Avenue

Friday's post on how quickly the condoplex is going up at 32 E. Seventh St. (aka 119-121 Second Ave.) prompted a few readers to ask about 24 Second Ave. (aka 32 E. First St.) six blocks to the south.

There's slowish but steady progress on this 10-story condoplex on the site of the former BP station, the second-to-last-one in the neighborhood. We noted that the building reached the third floor in April 2017.

The top photo is from Saturday.

As previously reported, the building will house 30 condos, with homes ranging from $1.125 million to $10.5 million along with ground-floor retail. The building's website — "meticulous meets magnificence" — lists that seven units remain for purchase.

Newish signage notes that this intersection of Second Avenue and First Street is inexplicably where Chrystie meets Bond...

Chrystie is close enough... but Bond is a few blocks to the west, as the arrow points out...

What this area needs is a good nickname — ChryBo? BonTie?

Anyway, as previously noted, the building will house 30 condos, with homes ranging from $1.125 million to $10.5 million along with ground-floor retail.

24 2nd Ave. getting its limestone exoskeleton

Over at 24 Second Ave. (aka 32 E. First St.), workers have been adding the stone-colored frames to the façade of the 10-story condoplex that replaced the East Village's second-to-last gas station.

Here's a look at the limestone exoskeleton in-progress on the First Street side...

As previously noted, the building will house 31 condos, with homes ranging from $1.125 million (a whopping 484 square feet!) to $10.5 million (the penthouse).

And here's part of the lengthy description of the penthouse via Douglas Elliman:

A light-filled four bedroom, five bathroom Duplex Penthouse positioned on the top 2 floors of 32 East 1st Street, Where Chrystie Meets Bond [ed note: ??????], with brushed solid white oak wood floors throughout, 2 terraces with 2 outdoor kitchens features 10' ceilings and expansive triple-pane windows with 360-degree views of the downtown and midtown skylines.

A direct private elevator opens to a private corridor on the 10th floor, adjacent to a stairwell leading to an expansive 1,591 SF private terrace spanning the entire 11th floor of the building fully equipped with an outdoor kitchen and Wolf grilling station, a dining area and three lounge spaces and is finished with travertine floors and planters integrated with lights & speakers, creating a space ideal for indoor/outdoor living and entertaining.

Particular attention to detail is demonstrated in the kitchen located on the second floor of this duplex, opening to a dining room which leads out to a second private terrace with another fully equipped outdoor kitchen including Wolf grilling station, ice maker, refrigerator, and lounge and dining spaces.

The corner master bedroom boasts a walk-in closet and en-suite five fixture master bathroom, which acts as a sanctuary with beautifully appointed onyx walls and floors with radiant heat, perfectly accented by a brushed solid oak wood dual vanity topped with a Corian countertop and dual sinks, matched by a custom designed Antonio Lupi "Sartoriale" Cristalplant soaking tub; the space is completed with a separate glass enclosed rain-shower a wall mounted Duravit Washlet toilet and custom Italian fixtures by CEA Design.

The BP station with snack shop closed in July 2014. This was the second-to-last gas station in the East Village, joined later by the Mobil station on Avenue C and East Houston in September 2014.

Look at the old BP station on 2nd Avenue now

Here on Second Avenue at First Street (officially 32 E. First St.!), work is zipping along on the 10-story 31-unit condoplex at the site of a former BP station.

Sales started last month, with homes ranging from $1.175 million to $8.7 million. (Six of the homes are apparently already in contract, per Streeteasy.)

Here's a description of the building:

Inspired by the contemporary aesthetic of Italian rationalist design, 32 East 1st Street purposely lives within its urban context, presenting a substantial limestone exoskeleton accentuated by expansive windows and geometric metal detailing.

And here is the view from First Street...

And soon enough!

Looking at the BP-replacing condos coming to 32 E. 1st St.

As we noted two weeks ago, the mural by Brazilian twins Os Gêmeos was starting to disappear behind the new 10-story retail-residential building at 24 Second Ave. and First Street.

CityRealty had more details this week about the "spiffy collection of condos" expected to be finished later next year. For starters, the official address of the building housing 33 condos is 32 E. First St.

Here's more via CityRealty:

The lively and geometric exterior is designed by the design firm Combined who is a joint-partnership between RSVP Architecture Studio and N-Plus Design Studio. The façade is composed of stone-colored frames that project from a face of windows and dark-colored spandrels and mullions.

New interior renderings show the forthcoming homes will have open layouts, arrays of windows that are not quite floor-to-ceiling, and beveled ceilings. The amenity offerings will include a fitness center, spa, mail room, communal terrace and a recreation room.

Here are some renderings via Combined.
Updated: A rep for Combined said that they did not grant permission for the use of the renderings. So you can check out all the renderings at the Combined website. (Or CityRealty here.)

The property was home to BP, which closed in July 2014. The BP was the second-to-last gas station in the East Village.

2nd Avenue development makes 1st appearance above the plywood

Crews have been busy on the foundation of the 10-story residential building that will rise at 24 Second Ave. at First Street.

And this past week, the structure made its first appearance above the grade...

As previously noted, apartments will begin on the second floor, with four to five units per floor through the sixth story. The seventh and eighth floors will host two duplexes, and the ninth and tenth floors will hold one penthouse duplex with a private roof deck. Amenities include a shared terrace and recreation space on the second floor, and a fitness room, storage and bike storage in the cellar.

Permits show some 45,000 square feet for the 31 residences (rentals? condos?) … and another 5,700 square feet for the commercial space.

And the rendering...

The BP, which served a nice coffee, closed here in July 2014.

BP has closed on East Houston; 1 gas station remains below 14th Street in NYC

As we first reported, the BP station on East Houston and Lafayette was set to close yesterday to make way for a new office-retail building.

Workers were on the scene early this morning, as these photos via an EVG reader show, to start erecting a sidewalk bridge before the demolition. (The demo permits were filed in December 2014.)

The demolition includes the former Puck Fair space... the pub closed last month...

As for 300 Lafayette, once completed, the new building will encompass 80,000 square feet of "flagship retail and boutique office" ...

[Rendering by Cookfox]

As for gas, there's a BP on 23rd Street at the FDR. With this closure, there'll be just one gas station in the city below 14th Street — a Mobil on Eighth Avenue near East 13th Street.

BP station on East Houston and Lafayette closes April 14

A 7-story boutique office building is in the works for the parcel of land on East Houston and Lafayette that currently houses the always-busy BP station as well as the Irish pub Puck Fair.

Puck Fair will close for good this coming Sunday. (The goodbye party is Friday.)

Soon after, the BP station will shut down... officially on April 14...

Per the sign, BP is positioning this as a move... to the existing BP on East 23rd Street at the FDR. (The BP also closed at Second Avenue and East First Street to make way for a new development.)

While the closing date was only recently announced, the closure was a foregone conclusion. In fact, the demolition permit was filed in December 2014, per city records.

As for 300 Lafayette, once completed, the new building will encompass 80,000 square feet of "flagship retail and boutique office" ...

So you have a few weeks left to fill up at the pumps, pick up some bagels at the BP shop...

... and take in the unobstructed view of Kendall Jenner at the Calvin Klein wall across East Houston...

Report: Puck Fair closes on March 27

After 16 years, Puck Fair, the Irish pub on Lafayette just south of Houston, will close for good on March 27, Gothamist reported.

Puck Fair and the BP station next door will be demolished to make way for a 7-story boutique office building that will look like...

[Rendering by Cookfox via Crain's]

The farewell party at Puck Fair is on March 25. And the details via Facebook:

Well folks it's with great sorrow that I must break the news that Puck Fair must close it's doors at the end of this month. After 16 years of operation the powers that be are making way for a new development on our corner of Lafayette street.

So come join us between now and then but especially on Friday the 25th of March when we will host our farewell party with drink specials, live music and all the usual things you've grown to expect from us at Puck.

The Puck Fair owners also operate Swift Hibernian Lounge on East Fourth Street between the Bowery and Lafayette.

The BP station has yet to announce its closing date.

Report: Boutique office building on East Houston and Lafayette at BP site a go

Despite not having any tenants, Related Cos. will start construction of a swanky new boutique office building on East Houston and Lafayette in the next few months, Crain's reports.

The development has been in the discussion phase for several years now.

Per Crain's:

Developers typically need to find an anchor tenant in order to establish a source of income that will help to finance the construction of the development. But like other boutique-office developers, Related discovered that it would have to take a risk and construct the building without a tenant in hand because small-sized office tenants do not make decisions on their office space years in advance. Instead they sign leases closer to when they are ready to make a move.

The 7-story terra-cotta and limestone building — designed by Cookfox Architects — will have 30,000 square feet of retail and 53,000 square feet of office space. As Crain's noted, "300 Lafayette will have abundant outdoor space, with a roof deck and expansive terraces on each floor."

And here is a rendering...

[Rendering by Cookfox via Crain's]

The building is expected to be finished in 2018.

Meantime, this means the BP station on the lot will be closing soonish. So the BP on East 23rd Street at Avenue C/the FDR will be the closest place around here if you need gas. (Gas for your vehicle. Because someone will make a joke.)

Newsflash: It doesn't take long to demolish a gas station

The workers made pretty quick, uh, work today of the former BP (and Gulf!) station at 24 Second Ave. at East First Street…

We're going back later to nab some of those cinder blocks to build a kiln … and maybe rummage around for any leftover bagels (I recall them having a toaster…)

[The good old days of Gulf bagels]

In case you missed this from yesterday, we got the first look at the new 10-story retail-residential complex that will call this corner home.

Check out the new 10-story building for the former 2nd Avenue BP station

The demolition work got underway yesterday (officially anyway) at 24 Second Ave. at East First Street.

As if that's not newsy enough, the city OK'd the plans (per DOB records) on Monday for the new 10-story retail-residential complex that will call this corner home. (Pretty speedy turnaround for the city. Reps for the developer only filed the plans in July.)

Dumbo-based RSVP Studio is the architect of record. While we didn't find any renderings at RSVP, there is a new one on the website for mortgage lender Ladder Capital, who provided a bridge loan for … brace!

Permits show some 45,000 square feet for the 31 residences (rentals? condos?) … and another 5,700 square feet for the commercial space.

As New York Yimby first noted in July when the developers filed the permits, apartments will begin on the second floor, with four to five units per floor through the sixth story. The seventh and eighth floors will host two duplexes, and the ninth and tenth floors will hold one penthouse duplex with a private roof deck. Amenities include a shared terrace and recreation space on the second floor, and a fitness room, storage and bike storage in the cellar.

The BP — which was the second-to-last gas station left in the East Village — closed in July 2014.

If you been walking on Second Avenue near East First Street, then you've likely seen the new mural going up next to the former BP station on the corner.

As BoweryBoogie noted yesterday, this is the work of the Brazilian twins Os GêmeosGoggla shared the above photo from yesterday… we walked by earlier this morning, and they were just starting work…

… and a view from the cherry picker…

More about the 10-story building taking the place of the former BP station at 24 2nd Ave.

[EVG photo from December]

At long last reps for the developer filed the new building plans for what's coming next to the former BP station on Second Avenue at East First Street.

The Deal Deal reported back in the fall that a new development with 50,000 square feet of condominiums and 7,000 square feet of retail is on the way.

New York Yimby had a few more details on Tuesday about the property that AORE Capital paid $32 million for last July. Per NYY: "The 10-story development will have 52,700 square feet of residential space and 6,000 square feet of retail spread between the cellar and first floor. There will be just 31 apartments, which works out to impressively sized units of 1,700 square feet a piece."

And!

Apartments will begin on the second floor, with four to five units per floor through the sixth story. The seventh and eighth floors will host two duplexes, and the ninth and tenth floors will hold one penthouse duplex with a private roof deck. Amenities include a shared terrace and recreation space on the second floor, and a fitness room, storage and bike storage in the cellar.

NYY also found a rendering for the project, though it may be out of date as it only shows eight and not 10 floors.

This marks the third new building of late on Second Avenue between East Second Street and East Houston, joining Jupiter 21 and Ben Shaoul's East Luxe.

Drilling at the former 2nd Avenue BP station

We've been waiting for something construction-y to happen at the former BP station on Second Avenue at East First Street. Workers removed the iconic pumps and underground tanks in December.

The Deal Deal reported back in the fall that a new development with 50,000 square feet of condominiums and 7,000 square feet of retail is on the way. However, permits for a new building are not on file yet with the Department of Buildings. (The most recent permit is for the construction fence! Woo!)

But there is a some sort of drilling rig contraception (or is this a quinzhee?) … drilling and soil testing at the site now.

Also, is anyone going to see that Morrissey-Blondie show June 27 at the Garden?
