Here is your Red & Gold Crab Shack! signage on St. Mark's Place
The emoji-ish Crabby arrived on Friday here at 30 St. Mark's Place, per neighbor Jordy Trachtenberg.
Otherwise, we don't know much else yet about the incoming restaurant taking over the former Japadog space along here between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Reader report: Crab Shack in the works for former Japadog space on St. Mark's Place
[EVG file photo]
After two-plus years at 30 St. Mark's Place, Japadog closed for good this past Feb. 28.
Interior renovations started yesterday on the next venture: Crab Shack, a restaurant specializing in (duh) crab … this info is via neighbor Jordy Trachtenberg, who spoke with one of the owners.
And that's all the info that we have at the moment…

Japadog loses it letters on St. Mark's Place
Japadog, the Japanese-inspired hot dog restaurant by way of Vancouver, closed for good Friday on St. Mark's Place.
And the Japadog letters came down yesterday. We were hoping to nab the DOG. Or maybe the PA.

Weekend recap: Japadog has closed
As we first reported Friday, Japadog has closed on St. Mark's Place.
The Japanese-inspired hot dog restaurant by way of Vancouver opened the first U.S. outlet at 30 St. Mark's Place to great fanfare in January 2012.
And we were completely wrong about this place… predicting long lines and the end of humanity, pretty much. (We weren't alone in this feeling!) But the place never quite seemed to catch on. (Remember when they tried a breakfast service for a day or two?)
What do you think? Too much food competition on St. Mark's Place with $1 pizza, sliders, ramen, Chipotle, etc., etc.? Not to mention an already established hot-dog specialist down St. Mark's in Crif Dogs. The arrival of Papaya King back in May could not have helped…
We haven't heard an official reason for the closure. An employee told Eater yesterday that Japadog closed due to "problems with management." There hasn't been a mention of the closure on Japadog's various social media platforms.
As for what's next here… the space is fully vented for a restaurant… we spotted the listing on Craigslist back on Thursday … still, you have to figure ramen, $1 pizza, bubble tea, FroYo or vaping products as possible candidates here…

[January 2012 photo by Bobby Williams]
The Japanese-inspired hot dog restaurant by way of Vancouver opened the first U.S. outlet at 30 St. Mark's Place to great fanfare in January 2012.
And now, word is circulating that Japadog will be closing after business tonight. No reason given at the moment for the closure.
A quick reaction via Twitter…
We spotted the listing for the Japadog space yesterday on Craigslist, though we didn't realize the place was closing this quickly:
We'll have more on this later… but if you want one one last umami dog with those bonito flakes, better hurry…

DOH temporarily shutters Japadog on St. Mark's Place
EV Grieve reader AC noted that the DOH temporarily closed Japadog here on St. Mark's Place... The inspection must have happened late this afternoon — the report isn't on the DOH website just yet. The popular hot doggery opened between Second Avenue and Third Avenue on Jan. 5.
Meanwhile, unrelated, EV Grieve reader Venya noted that someone borrowed/stole/swallowed the J in Japadog a few weeks back...
Workers replaced the J in due time...

Japadog opens today at 3; no lines forming (yet)
[All is quiet last night outside Japadog on St. Mark's Place]
Grub Street called it — that Japadog would open Jan. 5 — today! — at 30 St. Mark's Place. Indeed, as the sign out front says, the dogstars* will open this afternoon at 3.
When we reported this fact, we joked that the lines would start forming on Jan. 2. Several people said that we were stupid. "You're stupid," wrote one person in an email to us.
Anyway! Japadog President Noriki Tamura left this message on Facebook on Dec. 25... in part: "[T]his is only the beginning of Japadog's legacy of becoming the world’s best hotdog store. Japadog's mission of making the world happy though hotdog still goes on, and we will like to devote all our time to make Japadog a better place. We thank everybody again for making everything possible."
And if you go, let us know how it is. And if you go and there's a line, please take a photo for us. We'll reimburse you with the handful of Tums in our desk drawer.

Breaking: Japadog opening on Jan. 5; lines to start forming Jan. 2
[Friday outside the Japadogster home, by Bobby Williams]
Grub Street hears that the Japadog location is opening at 30 St. Mark's Place on Jan. 5. (They have a copy of the menu too.)
No word just yet when the lines will start forming ... so we'll go with Jan. 2. Bring your blankets!

What Japadog is looking like inside these days
Jordy "the Saint on St. Marks Place" recently walked by the incoming Japadog at No. 30...
...the popular Vancouver-based artisanal hot dog stand is seeking a liquor license on Monday during the CB3/SLA committee meeting...and workers were collecting signatures outside ... and Jordy asked for a look inside... Here ya go... (look for an opening around Dec. 25...)
With Crif Dogs down the way, Jordy asks, "I’m feeling like a real hotdog war is about to begin, don’t you?"

Your Japadog exterior, interior update of the day
[Bobby Williams]
Yesterday at 30 St. Mark's Place. The Japadog folks haven't committed yet on an opening date — just December. Some time.
And this is what the interior will look like, via the Japadog New York site...

Japadog opening next month on St. Mark's Place
Well, Japadog may be a scratch on the CB3/SLA agenda this month... but, according to the sign out front of the Dogsters first U.S. outlet, the place opens at 30 St. Mark's Place in December....

Japadog construction starts; plus, the end of an era for 'the doorshitter'?
As we reported, Japadog is opening its first U.S. outpost at 30 St. Mark's Place...
Last week, workers knocked off the front section of the address, the former Go Japanese Restaurant...
In doing so, the space here is, of course, much more wide open... a space made famous (sort of!) last summer ...
...by the infamous Doorshitter.
Not really as much cover left for clandestine crapping.

Cue the long lines: Japadog opening first New York City location on St. Mark's Place
Here come the lines. Japadog, the crazy popular Vancouver-based artisanal hot dog stands, is opening its first brick-and-mortar (whatever) shop on 30 St. Mark's Place.
Oh my. This will get really delirious.
Jeremiah Moss first brought us the possibility of a Japadog invasion back in March 2010.
Per Jeremiah:
Knowing New York's current passion for (1) standing in line for trendy food, (2) all things Japanese, (3) adorable, artisanal sidewalk food vendors, and (4) cheap, white-trash food turned into semi-haute cuisine (burgers, cupcakes, bacon, pizza, et al.), I predict that Japadog will be immensely successful here.
He goes on.
[W]hen the now bigger, much more powerful Japadog announces plans for a three-story, outdoor, hot-dog and beer pleasure palace to be erected on a quiet street in "Nolita," the community will rally against them, successfully blocking construction.
