Reader report: Empanada Mama opening at the former Papaya Dog space on 14th and 1st

Multiple readers tell us that Empanada Mama is opening an outpost on the NW corner of 14th Street and First Avenue (the former Papaya Dog space).

A worker at the under-renovation space told EVG regular Pinch that an an "empanada" place is opening here... a commenter went on to specify that it will be an Empanada Mama, which, if true, will make the fourth location in NYC, including the one at 95 Allen St.

Papaya Dog shuttered here with 0.0 warning last fall, ending a 16-year-run of slinging cheap eats from this corner.

Moving day for the old Papaya Dog signage on 14th Street & 1st Avenue

Workers yesterday removed the (iconic, sort of?) Papaya Dog signage off the former hot dogeria on the NW corner of First Avenue and 14th Street... (thanks to @ptrbrckwll for the top photo and Kent Jones for this pic)...
So the big question: What's coming next to this space? (Work permits only mention renovation of an existing eating/drinking establishment, etc.) To answer the question: We don't know!

PD shuttered without any warning last October (first reported here) after 16 years in business.

What's the deal? Lot Stop slated for former Duane Reade space on 1st Avenue

There has been ramped-up speculation about the future of the NW corner of 14th Street and First Avenue ever since Papaya Dog closed last fall

The corner looks ripe for development with the block-long stretch of (mostly) one-level structures.

Perhaps someday we'll see some kind of condoplex or mixed-use new building. But in the near future, the former Duane Reade space just north of 14th Street will be home to a discount store called Lot Stop with the slogan "A Real Deal!" (Thanks to Sonya for the pic!

There are nearly a dozen Lot Stops in the tri-state area. Here's more about their biz, via the chainlet's website:
Lot Stop is a family-operated business founded in 2011. We pride ourselves on offering name brands at the lowest price possible. Our close-out buying team sources deals nationally every week enabling us to provide incredible bargains.
As the world was transitioning to online shopping, we did not want our neighborhoods to lose the convenience and feeling of connection that comes with a "brick-and-mortar" shopping experience. We study trends, popular name brand items, and necessities to provide the same merchandise as superstores and online giants, at better prices. We take pride in carefully choosing our locations to create an asset to the community through stellar employees and developing lasting relationships with the many who shop here.
The Duane Reade closed here in November 2019

Lot Stop is the second discount shop to open in the EV this spring... joining USA Super Stores in the former Duane Reade on Third Avenue and 10th Street.

Boarding up Papaya Dog

Last month, Papaya Dog shut down without any warning (first reported here) on the northwest corner of 14th Street and First Avenue.

And last week, someone boarded up the windows and doors...
... fueling speculation that this was the first sign on pending demolition ahead of some new development.

Perhaps someday, but for now, there's nothing new on file with the DOB indicating any kind of construction.

Given the two smashed windows here, this looks to be more of a defense plywooding.

Taking a look at the NW corner of 14th Street and 1st Avenue

For starters, ICYMI: Papaya Dog has closed here on the NW corner of First Avenue and 14th Street after 16 years of peddling hot dogs and sandwich combos ... as we first reported back on Thursday. (Thanks to KT and Pinch!)
This corner has been on a watch-list for years ... with the mostly single-level strip of commercial buildings seemingly waiting to be gobbled up for new development. Plus, the four-story 239 First Ave., where the shuttered Salt & Pepper sold Indian and Chinese cuisine from the storefront next to Papaya Dog, remains vacant.

Anyway, there's nothing in public records to suggest anything is afoot here for the time being.

A lot of people also had feelings about Papaya Dog's departure, especially on Twitter. And there was a lot of conversation about the ongoing issues — fights, drug use, etc. — along this corridor.

Reader report: Cheap-eats fave Papaya Dog looks done on 14th Street

Several EVG readers noted that Papaya Dog has been dark recently on the northwest corner of 14th Street and First Avenue ... and yesterday, KT spotted a worker cleaning out the space. He confirmed that the closure is permanent. (All pics here by KT.)

Later yesterday, some furniture and other PD items were placed on the curb...
A look inside shows that many of the fixtures have been removed...
Papaya Dog seems as if it was here forever. However, Manhattan Sideways listed its opening in 2005.

There's a Papaya Dog still in business on Sixth Avenue (and on Fulton Street?), though other quick-serve hot dog joints have dwindled in numbers in recent years. (The circa-1932 Papaya King is still serving up the grilled franks and papaya drinks on the UES.)

While prices here inched up lately, you could still get two hot dogs, fries and a drink for $7.99 late into the night.

This corner also seems primed for development. But at this point, there's nothing official about anything coming to this corner ... for now.

Hot dog! Papaya Dog returns

We've been noting some restaurant-cafe reopenings these past few days... EVG Pinch regular shares another — Papaya Dog is back open on the northwest corner of 14th Street and First Avenue with their variety of $5.99 and $6.49 combo deals...

A look at the northwest corner of 14th Street and 1st Avenue

The Duane Reade on First Avenue just north of 14th Street closed last Wednesday, one of many DRs around the city to do so.

This (mostly) single-level strip of commercial buildings on the northwest corner has long drawn reader interest ... mostly because someone hasn't gobbled up these properties for new development.

All of the four-story 239 First Ave., where the shuttered Salt & Pepper sold Indian and Chinese cuisine from the storefront, is apparently vacant ...

Anyway, there's nothing in public records to suggest anything is afoot here. And a new Japanese restaurant is coming to the former Kambi Ramen House space there next door to O'Hanlon's...

For now it's on the Future Development Site watch. And enjoy Papaya Dog.

Papaya Dog back open

Meant to note that Papaya Dog on First Avenue and East 14th Street is back open after a brief bout with the DOH earlier this week. Violations included "Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations," among other things you may not want to know about.

DOH temporarily closes Papaya Dog

Ugh. The DOH paid a visit to Papaya Dog on East 14th Street and First Avenue yesterday ... and apparently didn't like what they saw during the inspection. The report isn't yet online...
