On Broadway, that Teavana (RIP Silver Spurs) will become a Starbucks

[Photo from October 2014 via @elivalley]

Starbucks is reportedly doing away with its Teavana tea bar concept, and is closing its three Manhattan locations, including the one on Broadway at East Ninth Street.

And what will replace Teavana? Per BuzzFeed, who first reported on this:

The company announced on Friday that it will convert the three Teavana tea bar locations in New York into Starbucks stores by the end of April.

For 34 years, the corner space here was home to Silver Spurs, the diner that closed in December 2013.

As for Teavana, Starbucks bought the Atlanta-based company for $620 million in December 2012. While the Teavana tea bars are closing, Starbucks will continue on with the nearly 350 Teavana retail outlets across the country.

Gutting the former Silver Spurs space to make way for Teavana

Last month we noted that the Starbucks-owned Teavana was opening a location on Broadway and East Ninth Street.

We hadn't walked by this northwest corner for several weeks ... and, as the photo shows, the plywood is up and the gut renovation is on for the specialty tea and tea accessory retailer.

In December 2012, Starbucks bought the Atlanta-based Teavana for $620 million.

No word on an opening date yet for Teavana.

Last December, Silver Spurs got rent-hiked out of its 34-year-old home here.

Starbucks-owned Teavana coming to the former Silver Spurs space on Broadway

Last December, Silver Spurs got rent-hiked out of its 34-year-old home on Broadway and East Ninth Street (prompting some teary letters from children in the process).

Now comes word of a new tenant in the diner's former space — another NYC branch of Teavana, a specialty tea and tea accessory retailer.

There isn't any signage up yet to indication the shop's arrival.

In December 2012, Starbucks bought the Atlanta-based Teavana for $620 million.

The other Silver Spurs location remains open on LaGuardia Place.

Teary letters to landlord show that local children are devastated over closure of Silver Spurs

Silver Spurs closed earlier in the month on Broadway and Ninth Street; its contents already auctioned off.

Word was that the reliable 34-year-old diner lost its lease… with the landlord asking for a big rent hike.

The news apparently hasn't sat well with some local kids (or one kid) … whose sad letters now adorn the empty diner's front door…

Behold!

Here's part of one letter:

"Dear owner of building. You should be ashamed that you put the rent up! Silver Spurs was one of the most special places in the world. A lot of people had heart touching moments there. And no matter what you do we will will always remember the days we were there. So please reopen the restaurant."

Sad… but at least the children can still go to the Silver Spurs location on LaGuardia Place. Or maybe it's time to branch out to the Odessa.

Goodbye Silver Spurs, where everything was auctioned off today

As we first reported on Thursday, the Silver Spurs diner was hanging it up after 34 years on Broadway and East Ninth Street… today, the auctioneers were on the site, as EVG reader Eric Bieber noted…

(We kinda wanted one of those faux cowskin booths…)

Their lease was up, and the owner of the building apparently wanted a big rent hike.

The LaGuardia Place location remains open.

After 34 years, Silver Spurs is closing on Broadway

Ugh. The always-reliable Silver Spurs diner on Broadway near East Ninth Street is closing, as their farewell sign above points out. Their lease has expired, and Sunday is their last day in business.

A new bank branch will look pretty nice in this spot, huh?

And we're running out of diners around here… with the loss of University Diner … and, a few years back, Bon Vivant...
