Selling off the remains of Veselka Bowery

Meanwhile, there is also a Craigslist ad for the remains of Veselka Bowery, which closed April 28 after nearly 18 months in business. Items for sale include a Hobart dishwasher, Vulcan range, can crusher, chairs, bar stools, work tables and hostess stands.

Veselka Bowery has closed

After a 17-month run at Avalon Bowery Place, Veselka Bowery has closed, as we first reported yesterday morning. They closed at 4 yesterday, then held some "private event" in the space. (Food for Cheap Trick?)

The consensus among readers and others we talked with: Sad but not surprising. It never seemed all that full. There were attempts to get a bar crowd by showing Yankees games ... Veselka also launched a free pedicab service: "If you don't want to wait for a table at the original Veselka, we will give you a free Pedicab ride to our new restaurant Veselka Bowery."

And we recall an inauspicious opening in October 2011, where Veselka Bowery teamed up with Urban Daddy, who usually champions the likes of Superdive, for a $75 sneak preview tasting menu that includes a "five-course pierogi-and-vodka pairing." (Read the comments from that post.)

At the end of the day, people seemed to just want a diner. But that concept isn't going to work here, at a glass-and-steel factory like Avalon Bowery Place.

Anyway, the food press will likely have some exit interviews with the Veselka folks about what happened here. For now, the signs on the Veselka Bowery door thank people for their patronage, "Love and Light to you all!"

Today is the last day for Veselka Bowery

On Thursday, a tipster told us that he overheard waitstaff at Veselka Bowery say they were closing after this weekend. However, we never received confirmation from management.

Now, though, the restaurant at Avalon Bowery Place has updated its Facebook account with this message:

Veselka Bowery wants to thank all of our old friends — and the new friends we made along the way — as we close our doors today at 4PM for the last time.

There were great times and great food. Thank you for your unending support and thanks to the East Village community for being the best little town in the country's biggest city.

We're sorry to close, but it's not goodbye if we see you in our original Veselka :: Beceлкa location, where the doors never close. Keep in touch!

The restaurant opened in November 2011.

Places where I never watched a baseball game in 2012

Veselka Bowery.

Had always planned to watch a game here during the regular season, which ended Wednesday night for the Yankees. I often saw the chalkboard sign noting the game time. And there are several flat-screen TVs at the bar.

I was going to do a post on watching a game at a seemingly unusual place. The thought of doing this at Second Avenue and East Ninth Street would be very strange.

But I suppose the Bowery branch is trying to build a bar crowd, tap into the increasingly sports-minded neighborhood. The things that you have to do to survive.

Anyway, guess I can go for a playoff game...

Brunch for preservation tomorrow

From the EV Grieve inbox...from the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative...

Organizers say the benefit event is mostly for the meal and conversation ... though they will touch on some strategizing on preservation and landmarking in the East Village and Lower East Side moving forward... More details here.

Veselka Bowery opening tomorrow?

That's what an employee told us anyway... No official word from the Mothership yet.

And now, photos from Veselka Bowery's Facebook page...

Veselka Bowery kinda looks open

Bobby Williams took these shots yesterday afternoon while walking by the long-time-coming Veselka Bowery on East First Street, which owner Tom Birchard described as a "toned-down Ukrainian Balthazar" in an interview with The Feast.

Perhaps it's just a test run... meanwhile, nothing official about an opening on Veselka's Facebook page or Twitter feed...

Veselka Bowery teams up with UrbanDaddy for a sneak-preview 'five-course pierogi-and-vodka pairing'

Veselka Bowery watchers have been wondering when the, um, Veselka Bowery location on East First Street will open. If the following is any indication, then soon....

A reader sent along this link from UrbanDaddy, in which its "members" can pay $75 for a sneak preview tasting menu Sunday night... the deal includes a "five-course pierogi-and-vodka pairing." The reader, who said he is Polish so there is "much love for vodka and pierogi," had a few unkind words about this pairing. (The same UrbanDaddy that champions the lowest-common denominator places like, say, Superdive.)

And now, a look at the naked mannequins inside Veselka Bowery

So we saw people decorating here at Veselka Bowery last evening... dunno if this is for a special event of sorts... or if the new restaurant will look like an airport gift shop ...

Veselka Bowery has beverage director; will open early next month

[Bobby Williams]

The Post had a feature yesterday on new restaurants, chefs and what not. I didn't read it. But... an EVG reader did, and noted that the Post included Veselka Bowery in its round-up, even running a photo of the new restaurant's beverage director.

Per the paper:

Count the bottles of Eastern European vodkas at Veselka Bowery (9 E. First St.; 212-387-7000), offspring of the beloved East Village Ukrainian soul-food joint. The new spot, opening in early October, will boast a full bar focused on small-producer vodkas from Poland, Ukraine and Russia, and an expanded menu. “It will be different and creative,” promises owner Tom Birchard.

Veselka Bowery now has ... stationery!

Tomorrow, we compare the toilet paper to the Veselka mothership. Plus, OK — they likely had the stationery for awhile now... just not on display in the front window.

Veselka Bowery now has... tables!

Last week, we pointed out that Veselka Bowery had chairs... and now! Tables...

Tomorrow? Linens! (If you're lucky...)

Veselka Bowery now hiring, putting out chairs

As the signs show here on Veselka's new East First Street location... the open call for the waitstaff and what not starts today...

And look — chairs!

No exact date just yet for the opening. But ... it's ... getting... closer.

Today in sneak peeks inside the Veselka Bowery

Workers have removed the paper from the coming-soon Veselka Bowery location on East First Street, offering a glimpse of the work-in-progress inside...

Veselka owner Tom Birchard told Fork in the Road on March 7 that the place here should be ready in late May or early June. Mid-June seems more likely now...

A quick look inside Veselka on the Bowery

As Fork in the Road noted, the place here on East First Street should be ready in late May or early June.

Speculating about Veselka Bowery's sidewalk cafe

We recently pointed out the Veselka Bowery signage on East First Street... Fork in the Road reported that the Bowery location will open in late May/early June... Fork in the Road also noted that this location will sport a sidewalk cafe for 30 to 40 diners. But where will this outdoor cafe live? Perhaps on First Street... thought that seems a little cramped...

More likely though... at the entryway into Avalon Bowery Place...

...across from the Bowery Wine Company outdoor space.
