Nicoletta will start delivering pizzas if you live just a few blocks away


Eater notes this morning that Nicoletta, the new pizza place some people like on Second Avenue at East 10th Street, is starting delivery service tonight.

And the delivery zone is: First Avenue to Third Avenue, and Ninth Street to 11th Street.

Can't seem to recall a smaller delivery zone than that one ...

Claim: Building that houses Odessa Cafe and Bar on Avenue A has been sold

Shawn Chittle reports that a source at Odessa claims the building housing the "old" Odessa at 117 Avenue A has been sold for $3.7 million. There are two years left on the Odessa lease, but the hammer may fall sooner than that. Odessa owners are retired and a buyout is possible.

Bob Holman, founder of the Bowery Poetry Club, sent us this email last evening about the future of the space....:

The rumors of the death of the Bowery Poetry Club are greatly exaggerated! It is true that ten years into Project Utopia, the hamster-tail chase of booking 30-35 gigs a week to allow the Poetry we know and love to live has produced a fatigued staff, a ragged Board (of Bowery Arts + Science, the nonprofit that books the Club), and a space that's crying out for a dose TLC. But toss in the Po' Towel? No Way, Joe!

By spending the summer renovating and working out a partnership with a restaurant (rumors of Duane Park as our collaborators are sweet and the two entities surely do share a love for the populist arts of the Bowery, but nothing is signed yet folks), we hope to reopen come fall and be SUSTAINABLE with a neighborhood (Loisaida/Earth) focused poetry schedule, utilizing other neighborhood resources as well as the Club. Look for a fuller deployment of the POEMobile around town, state, country, solar system, and a commitment to a global poetics rooted in the Endangered Language Movement.

To the communit-y/-ies who have supported us, and to our staff, deepest thanks! Stay tuned — we love you. Come party with Sean T and Ann and all on Tues July 17. Everything is Subject to Change! — and for our Tenth Anniversary next year, the BPC will look different. To survive and sustain. All the better to serve the world poetry.

In an article last week at The Villager, Lincoln Anderson wrote about his recent tour of 47 E. Third St., the former tenement that Alistair Economakis renovated for his family. (This after clearing the five-story rental of its residents.)

We meant to link to it ... this week, the post also appears at The East Villager. So here's another chance to revisit the article in case you missed it... no photos, though. (The family thought "this would be an invasion of their privacy.")

Anderson offers highlights from the home, which includes a wrestling room ... he also tracks down a few of the building's former tenants who took buyouts ... as well as gets comments from City Councilmember Rosie Mendez.

One other tidbit: Alistair Economakis commissioned the Mosaic Man to create a border above the basement's basement-level storefront ... which Economakis hopes to rent out to a medical facility.

Can a Movie Set Ruin Your Weekend?

Crews for the feature motion picture presentation "Can a Song Save Your Life?" have been been spotted around the Lower East Side this week. (BoweryBoogie has photos here.)

IMDB describes the plot this way: "A dejected music business executive forms a bond with a young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan."

Today, and this weekend, crews will be on parts of East Sixth Street, Avenue B, Seventh Street and elsewhere... we wholly expect them to film inside Vazac's at some point too...

Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Catherine Keener star in the film that John ("Once") Carney is directing from his own screenplay.

On Tuesday, we noted that Japanese artist Aiko was up next to create art on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall... and tonight, workers were on the scene painting over the current piece from Retna...

Selling price for 50-58 E. Third St. — $23.5 million

We've been reporting on the saga of 50-58 E. Third St. since early spring. Via Curbed's inbox, we now know more about the sale of the buildings — 50, 54 and 58 E. Third St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

According to a release announcing the sale today, the new owners are GRJ, a fund co-founded and co-managed by brothers Graham and Gregory Jones. (Pictured.) They closed the 78-unit, three-building package for $23.5 million. Abe Haruvi of Abart Holdings LLC was the previous owner. According to the Observer, Haruvi refinanced the buildings for $9.9 million in April 2011 — "a deal that valued the units at $213,889 apiece according to data from Real Capital Analytics."

Per Gregory Jones in the news release: "We see a real opportunity to reposition the buildings. We'll invest significant capital and we look forward to creating the most desirable walk-ups in the East Village."

A press rep for GRJ told the Observer that "he wasn't sure when the last lease in the buildings would expire, but guessed 'probably within a year.'"

We just received a news release about "a restructuring of the Moo Life Group brand that will return the restaurant group to its original mission — to develop gourmet Australian concepts in the United States and abroad."

Basically Bondi Road has been sold and the Sunburnt Cow will undergo a major transformation.

Let's get right to it, per the release:

The sale of Bondi Road was precipitated by a dramatic increase in rent for the space located at 153 Rivington Street ... The Sunburnt Cow, the first restaurant concept developed by the Moo Life Group at 137 Avenue C (between 8th and 9th Streets) will not only undergo a physical transformation, but will also shift focus to more gourmet oriented food and drink as opposed to its current deal-driven status.

"We are very excited about these changes and what they mean to the future of the Moo Life Group," says founder and owner Heathe St. Clair. "I want to thank all of our loyal customers who have made Bondi Road and the Sunburnt Cow so successful throughout the years. It was not an easy decision, but although Bondi Road will be gone, we look forward to the reopening of the Sunburnt Cow and introducing a new approach to Australian dining in New York City."

No date set for the renovations ... or what will become of the Moo Mobile.

The Sunburnt Cow just reopened for seven-days-a-week service on June 1.

A Sunburnt Cow rep says that the "Endless Brunch" on weekends will continue in the new-look eatery.

Something is happening at the former Kate's Joint space


Kate's Joint closed on Avenue B and East Fourth Street back in April ... the for rent signs quickly went up — almost as quickly as the Starbucks rumors started.

One EVG reader with knowledge of the space heard that the asking rent is $17,000.

In any event, the space has been relatively quiet ... until this morning. Per EVG reader Kat:

Around 10:30 this morning this pile of wood appeared outside the former side entrance of Kate's and I've seen a few people filtering in and out. No one in the neighborhood (even the deli guys who know everything) seems to know what's happening with the space yet, but after a few really quiet months something looks to be moving in...

Signs of renovation life at 100 Avenue A

Nothing has really happened renovations-wise here at 100 Avenue A since East Village Farm (or Farms, as I like to call it) closed back in February.

The city disapproved the first round of plans to renovate the space, including adding a "dwelling unit" and roof garden on the upper floors.

But!

On Monday, 100 Avenue A reps filed new paperwork with the DOB:

LOWERING OF THE EXISTING CELLAR WHICH INCLUDES FOUNDATION WALLS AND FOOTINGS. NO CHANGE IN USE, OCCUPANCY OR EGRESS.

And at an estimated cost of $175,000.

Well, that's not much, but it is some kind of proof that plans are still in the works to convert the former grocery and theater.

We walked by 154 Second Ave., the former Sigmund Schwartz Gramercy Park Chapel between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street, the other day and looked inside the opened plywood. Not much left on the inside! The sun was pouring into the space from where there was a roof.

Confirmed: Bowery Poetry Club closing for renovations July 17

After weeks of speculation about the future of the Bowery Poetry Club ... including our post yesterday from an employee ... DNAinfo's Serena Solomon gets confirmation that the 10-year-old Club will close on July 17 "to renovate its space in advance of a relaunch that will put a stronger emphasis on food."

"There will be a better mix of food and art," said founder Bob Holman, who declined to go into further detail about the new-look Bowery Poetry Club.

EV Grieve reader Spencer Brighton alerted us to this bit of international news... Katie Holmes and her daughter went for ice cream last night at Sundaes and Cones on East 10th Street near Third Avenue.

Per the Daily News, who put the above photo on its cover today:

The actress and her adorable 6-year-old stepped out at Sundaes and Cones in the East Village, known for its offbeat flavors. The pair wore coordinated outfits — Holmes in a crimson shirt, white shorts and $795 Yves Saint Laurent wedges with a poppy motif to match Suri’s $175 Milly Minis dress.

And what is known for its "offbeat flavors"? Sundaes and Cones or the East Village?

Report: State turns off the gin taps at Gin Palace


Gin Palace got some buzzy press when it recently opened on the corner of Avenue A and East Sixth Street, particularly for its gin on taps, as featured above in the Post.

Last evening, Robert Simonson at Diner's Journal reported that the New York State Liquor Authority turned off those taps on Monday, citing them as illegal. An SLA spokesperson said that charges were not brought against Gin Palace.

Meanwhile, bar owner Ravi DeRossi believes what Gin Palace is doing is legal, and plans to fight the ruling at a July 20 hearing, according to Diner's Journal.

DeRossi thinks the SLA's action stems from a Prohibition-era law "that forbids a bar from taking alcohol from a bottle, pouring it into another and serving it." Apparently the SLA amended that law to allow for the use of frozen margaritas machines.

Anyway, Gin Palace is still open serving drinks not coming from a gin-and-tonic tap.

Aiko is next artist to take on the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall


A tipster tells us that a new mural will be going up soon at the Houston/Bowery Mural Wall ... dunno yet who the featured artist will be... In any event, we did spot the above this afternoon outside the wall... Retna, the current artist, wrapped up work back in March...

The Houston/Bowery Mural Wall is currently enjoying, perhaps, Worldwide Acclaim via the new music video by 11-year-old Willow Smith, daughter of Will and Jada.

Updated 3:53 p.m.

Another tipster tells us that Aiko, the Japanese artist who now resides in Brooklyn, will be starting work on the wall this weekend.

DOH temporarily closes Tuck Shop on East First Street


A Tuck Shop regular regretfully informs us that the DOH has temporarily closed the East First Street location after a visit yesterday yielded 46 violation points, including for "evidence" of various live things ... You can hit the locations on St. Mark's Place and the Chelsea Market in the meantime...

Advocate for East Third Street buildings moving to Washington Heights

As we were first to report this past March 15, Abart Holdings LLC was ready to sell three buildings at 50, 54 and 58 East Third Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Tenants with market-rate apartments weren't having their leases renewed. Per one resident in March:

"There are definitely much older families who live in the building, and suddenly they've been unceremoniously thrown out. The building is terrible as it is — several break-ins, terrible staircase, the entrance is poorly maintained — and now they are kicking everyone out."

Ben Kim at the Voice discovered that the landlord behind Abart Holdings LLC is Abe Haruvi. (The Voice wrote in October 2000 about how Haruvi allegedly tried to evict long-term tenants elsewhere in the city.)

The residents banded together and formed a tenants group; local politicians came out to offer support during a rally on May 7.


In the end, though, the Big Real Estate Machine was too great to overcome.

On Sunday, resident Sue Palchak-Essenpreis, who helped rally her fellow tenants, told us that she and her husband are moving out after 15 years. They tried to fight the non-renewal of their lease, which was up in May. On Friday, she and her husband appeared in housing court to see if they would have to pay the legal fees of Abart Holdings. She shared an email that she sent to other residents. In part, it read:

It is with heavy hearts and an empty bank account that Greg and I share the news that we are officially leaving.

We gave it the best that we had, but Abart's Goliath proved too huge for our humble David. The terms of the lawsuit were brutal and frightening, but in the end we settled. We ended up forfeiting our security deposit, which would cover one of the 2 months we were here past our lease end, and they accepted our last rent check. They did not hold us to the $3,500 per month they wanted us to pay, nor their legal fees, which was also in the suit. Their lawyer wrote into the settlement that they cannot come after us for any further damages to the apartment once we vacate. They will put a black mark on our credit that will be listed as "Settled to Satisfaction" once they prove we have truly vacated by July 14.

We are moving to Washington Heights.

I encourage any and all stabilized tenants to utilize 311 to it's fullest extent! Keep up the fight for acceptable living conditions! Hold Abe Haruvi accountable for the buildings that he is willing to destroy lives over!

We didn't go quietly. We fought the best fight that we could. And at the very least, we shed light on the fact that there is a real need for rent regulation and tenant protection...

Palchak-Essenpreis said that she received a few responses to her email, and that others in the buildings have either moved out or are in the process of doing so ... And a few of her former neighbors "paid outrageous brokers' fees, only to move into less space with giant rent increases."

"Abart wins, totally unaware of the devastation he's left in his wake," she said later in an email. "I cannot speak for the others, but we are completely destroyed... All because someone wants a couple extra hundred bucks a month off of our home."

Yesterday, residents received notices that the buildings were sold to Safeguard Realty Management Inc. is the new property manager.

And the couple, who are moving to Washington Heights tomorrow, received notice that they owe next month's rent.

"It just doesn't stop," Palchak-Essenpreis said.
