This corner on Avenue B and Fifth Street has sat dormant for 9 years after Zips moved out ... EV Grieve reader Dave on 7th just caught this glimpse inside the longtime-in-the-works Caffe Buon Gusto ... And check out the napkin fold...

minor factual correction. Didn't zips close down 5 or 6 years ago, not 9? I know they were still open in 2005.
That sounds about right... the 9 years was a poor attempt at humor.... just seems like it has been a long time for the new restaurant to get going... two-plus years, at least.
Worst thing about this location is this building's cornice. It's a masterpiece and it's absolutely rotting away. Sooner or later the city will force the owner to remove it. Fuck, I hate slumlords.

(ha! word verification is "butyp" (buttwipe)
i can hardly believe it. i, too, think Zips closed around 2006. five years in the making. the food had better have BON GUSTO.
and yeah, the napkins are overly elaborate. unless you're an indian row old-faux-fancy restaurant, this is a bad sign.
And facing Good old JHS 7, my old Junior High.
Won't ever get a full liquor license because of the school.
Bummed to see those napkins... All I wanted was a cheap authentic diner. Wrong neighborhood I guess
This Flickr photo of the old Zips grocery has a date of 2008 but I don't think it was still around then.
