Unpacking what there is at the Moxy East Village, now open on 11th Street

The Moxy East Village opened for business last week (Sept. 12) here on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue...

The 286-room Marriott brand has four eating and drinking venues by TAO Group: Cathédrale, a French-Mediterranean restaurant from Chef Jason Hall, Little Sister, an underground lounge, Alphabet Bar & Café, and a rooftop bar opening in spring 2020.

Cathédrale has already held several events, including the 2019 Us Weekly Most Stylish New Yorkers party on 9/11 that included Lil’ Kim, La La Anthony and various cast members from the Real Housewives.

[Cathédrale]

Here's a description of each via the EVG inbox, and there is a lot to unpack here (condensed for space reasons) ... brace!:

Alphabet Bar & Café, situated in the lobby, serves as the social heart of Moxy East Village, comprising a bar, terrace, co-working lounge, and meeting studios that seamlessly transition from day to night. The seating includes plush sofas and swinging chairs; a Skee-Ball game provides a hit of nostalgia for the arcade era.

An interactive real-time graffiti installation lets guests use a tablet to draw their own tag or sketch a bit of street art, like a latter-day Basquiat or Haring, and see it projected on the wall [Ed note: Will the Peninstrator strike?] . ... Alphabet Café serves an all-day menu of custom artisanal brews by Intelligentsia Coffee, freshly baked goods, composed salads, and seasonal panini and tartines.

The centerpiece of Moxy East Village is Cathédrale, a French-Mediterranean restaurant conceived by Tao Group Hospitality Chef/Partner Ralph Scamardella, in collaboration with Executive Chef Jason Hall. As diners descend from the lobby — via a staircase that resembles a fire escape between two East Village buildings — they'll feel like they're discovering an abandoned architectural treasure.

That's thanks to the show-stopping Rockwell Group-designed main dining room, a triple-height space covered by Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi's dramatic wire mesh sculpture that looks like the apparition of a grand domed ceiling. His ethereal sculpture for the ceiling of Cathédrale pays homage to the interior of the Fillmore East ...

Located on the lower level, adjacent to Moxy East Village, Little Sister is an intimate, seductive, sophisticated lounge — an update from the underground clubs that defined East Village nightlife in the 1990s.

Its clandestine, cavern-like feel is enriched by jewel-toned velvet sofas and plush banquettes, embossed leather accents, a glowing copper DJ stand, and a mirrored-copper bar illuminated by an overhead bank of backlit whiskey bottles. Wood-clad, barrel-vaulted ceilings evoke a hidden underground chamber where whiskey might have been stored in the bootlegger era. Legendary doorman Wass Stevens, will conspire to create an exclusive, in-the-know vibe at the ropes.

Opening in Spring 2020, the rooftop bar is designed to resemble a coveted New York City backyard garden, with strung garden lights, abundant foliage and colorful patio furniture. A retractable roof allows the bar to be used in all seasons.

Behind the bar, liquor bottles will be displayed in stacked plastic milk crates — not unlike those you'd spot on an East Village sidewalk. On one wall, interlaced with crawling ivy, will be a mural that overlays a map of the area with images from the neighborhood's musical and artistic history.

A few other details...

The hotel has also produced a series of short videos titled "Off the Beaten Path," featuring neighborhood legends and characters who will talk about the East Village's past, present, and future that guests will be able to enjoy on the in-room TVs, online, and on the @MoxyEastVillage Instagram.

In addition, the hotel has forged exclusive partnerships with neighborhood institutions. It will be the preferred hotel partner for Webster Hall, providing VIP concert access to select guests. The prestigious art school Cooper Union will have their student's work shown on a dedicated channel on the in-room TVs and will exhibit select student works and host panels at the hotel while providing guests access to events on campus.

The foundation work got underway here in August 2017. Workers demolished the five residential buildings that stood here in the fall of 2016.

The Moxy East Village opens this fall

The Moxy East Village, the 13-story, 285-room hotel from the Marriott brand, is expected to open this October.

This info comes via the Marriott website...

The hotel here on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue — across the street from the all-new Webster Hall — doesn't appear to be accepting reservations just yet.

The Marriott offers this info:

The bright and open lobby layout is paired with contemporary furniture. The "Plug and Meet" gathering areas provide modern ergonomic seating, large writing walls and 56-inch televisions for presentation projection. The lobby also boasts a state-of-the art video wall and 24/7 Food & Beverage offering a wide selection of snacks and drinks. Other hotel amenities include healthy continental breakfast, an evening bar featuring wines by the glass and local brews. All bedrooms are equipped with 42-inch flat-screen televisions, build in USB ports and free Wifi.

As previously reported, Tao Group is the food and beverage operator and the Lightstone Group's partner at the Moxy East Village. Plans include a 2,600-square-foot rooftop bar and a restaurant-lounge in the sub-cellar called MEV, short (apparently!) for Moxy East Village.

The foundation work got underway here in August 2017. Workers demolished the five residential buildings that stood here in the fall of 2016.

The photos on this post show the hotel as of this past Sunday...

A quick look at Webster Hall a month before it reopens

Webster Hall officially reopens on April 29 with a two-night stint by Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía followed by Patti Smith on May 1-2. All four of these shows are sold out. (And there are the rumors that a band such as the Strokes, the National or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will christen the new space at the end of the month before the official slate of acts.)

Ahead of the debut this month, here's a look at how the landmarked venue is shaping up outside here on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue...

As previously reported, Webster Hall is now owned by BSE Global and The Bowery Presents, who's booking the acts at the venue.

And here's a recap from a previously released press announcement:

The renovations at Webster Hall aimed to preserve the iconic features of the venue, while modernizing it to meet today’s entertainment standards and enhance the guest experience. The Lounge (formerly The Marlin Room) has been revamped to serve as a bar and meeting spot for ticketholders both before and after shows in the Grand Ballroom.

Design details of The Lounge include elegant gold stenciling on the walls that pays homage to the original historic design, and fluted glass along the bar that mimics the venue’s former windows.

In the Grand Ballroom, the original stage remains, while acoustics were enhanced to create an optimal live event experience. Fans and artists returning to Webster Hall will notice other new features such as central air conditioning, expanded restrooms, additional stairwells for smoother entry and exit, and the venue’s first-ever elevator that will serve guests with disabilities and speed up each show’s load-in and load-out process.

Behind the scenes, an artist compound was built with upgraded amenities to provide direct access to the Ballroom stage, creating a more comfortable and inviting environment for performers and their management. The venue’s basement level, formerly known as The Studio at Webster Hall, will also return, with more details to be announced at a later date.

The architect of the revived venue is OTJ Architects, the contractor is Shawmut Design and Construction, and acoustic design is by L’Acoustics. Once open, Webster Hall will employ an estimated 70 people across various positions in the venue, between front of house and back of house, on any given event night.

This landmarked building has been around since 1886. It re-opened as Webster Hall in October 1992 after the Ballinger family purchased and renovated the space that was known as The Ritz during the 1980s.

And for making it this far in the post, here are bonus photos of the Moxy East Village across the street from Webster Hall...

The 13-floor hotel via Marriott is expected to open at the end of the year.

More details about the Tao Group's eating-drinking options at the Moxy East Village

Back on Friday, I noted that reps for the incoming Moxy East Village will appear before CB3's SLA committee tonight to seek liquor licenses for the hotel's four eating-drinking establishments.

Tao Group is the food and beverage operator and the Lightstone Group's partner at the Moxy East Village, 112 E. 11th St. between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. In addition to operating the eating-drinking choices at the Moxy Times Square and Moxy Chelsea, Tao runs more than 20 venues throughout New York City (Beauty & Essex, Tao Downtown, Stanton Social, etc.).

The questionnaire on file at the CB3 website for the Moxy, a Marriott brand, is 121 pages.

First, from the questionnaire, an at-a-glance listing of all the eating-drinking options inside the hotel...

The 13-stoy hotel's rooftop bar seems to be of particular interest to nearby residents, so I'll focus on that, starting with the diagram...

The questionnaire states that the rooftop bar is 2,600 square feet, with a capacity of 179. The proposed hours are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. The kitchen closes at midnight. As for that kitchen, here's the menu...

Meanwhile, the main restaurant-lounge in the sub-cellar looks to be called MEV, short for Moxy East Village...

... which is awfully close to MEH.

The committee meeting starts tonight at 6:30. Location: The Perseverance House Community Room, 535 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

Moxy East Village reps to appear before CB3 in bid for liquor licenses for new 11th Street hotel

As previously noted, the incoming Moxy East Village will have four eating-drinking establishments — "for guests and locals" — here on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue.

Here's what's planned for the 13-story hotel in partnership with Marriott, according to a recent news release: a cellar-level restaurant and lounge, a lobby bar and lounge area, "an elevated twist on a traditional Grab & Go," and "an outdoor rooftop amenity."

Reps for the hotel are expected to appear before CB3's SLA committee on Monday evening to seek liquor licenses for these various concepts. (As of now, the questionnaire with more detailed information on the bars and restaurants has yet to be posted on the CB3 website. Update: The questionnaire is here. I haven't had time to go through it all just yet... The TAO Group, which operates about 500000 venues, including the Moxy Times Square, is the bar-restaurant vendor for the EV location as well.)

The Moxy is slated to open in late 2019. The Lightstone Group bought the five-building parcel of apartment buildings that stood here and had the properties demolished in the fall of 2016.

The committee meeting starts Monday at 6:30 p.m. Location: The Perseverance House Community Room, 535 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

A look at the coming-soon signage at the Moxy East Village

The coming-soon signage has arrived at the Moxy East Village on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue.

The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) was quick to note the branding on the sidewalk bridge...

It's not known if the glasses actually represent urbanist-activist Jane Jacobs ... or, perhaps, science buff Velma Dinkley from "Scooby-Doo."

In June 2016, local preservationists made their case to the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) to designate East 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue a historic district in a bid to save the five residential (circa 1887-1892) buildings from demolition.

However, the LPC ignored the request, Andrew Berman, executive director of the GVSHP, said at the time. Representatives for GVSHP, the Historic Districts Council, the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative and the East Village Community Coalition all signed a letter appealing to now-former LPC chair Meenakshi Srinivasan.

In any event, the use of tenements photo-printed on the sidewalk bridge — a simulation of the local New York streetscape the hotel destroyed — is reminiscent of Target's faux storefront/TRGT grand opening last summer on 14th Street.

The 13-story Moxy East Village is expected to open in late 2019.

A few Moxy East Village details

The developers of the Moxy East Village issued a news release late last week to announce that the 13-story hotel in partnership with Marriott had topped out on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. (Workers actually planted the flag atop the building in July.)

In any event, the media statement provides more info about the hotel, which is expected to be ready for vacancy action in late 2019:

Moxy East Village reflects its vibrant, ever-transforming neighborhood. Designed in collaboration between Stonehill & Taylor and Rockwell Group, the hotel's design concept is based on urban archeology and references the city's past, present and future. Conceived as a vertical timeline, each floor reveals a different layer in Lower Manhattan's history, creating a sense of discovery for guests.

Standing 13 stories tall, the stylish and affordable Moxy East Village will feature 286 cleverly-designed bedrooms, technology-savvy amenities, community based cultural and fitness programming, a well-equipped 24/7 gym, and co-working spaces. The hotel will include four new eating and drinking establishments for guests and locals, including a cellar level restaurant and lounge, a lobby bar and lounge area, an elevated twist on a traditional Grab & Go, and an outdoor rooftop amenity.

The foundation work got underway here in August 2017. Workers demolished the five residential buildings that stood here in the fall of 2016.

Report: A Moxy Hotel planned for the Bowery

[Google Street View]

There's yet another new hotel coming to the Bowery.

As The Real Deal reported yesterday, the Lightstone Group is in contract to buy 151 Bowery ... and will use the space — currently a lighting store at the southeast corner of the Bowery at Broome — to building their fourth Moxy Hotel in NYC.

The seller, Emmut Properties, previously had designs on an 8-story condo-hotel combo for the buildings at 151-153 Bowery (aka 331-337 Broome). Presumably the Moxy, Marriott's so-called millennial-friendly brand, will rise on this full parcel.

The 13-story Moxy East Village recently topped out on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue.

Other new Bowery hotels include the citizenM at 189 Bowery and Sister City at 225 Bowery.

The Moxy East Village tops out on 11th Street

Workers have reached the top at the 13-story Moxy East Village ... raising the American flag on the western side of the incoming hotel here on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue...

Work has progressed at a pretty good clip here... workers were still deep in the foundation phase at the end of 2017.

The opening for the Moxy East Village here on 11th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue had been slated for late 2018... an unrealistic/optimistic date given how much work there was left on the 285-key hotel for Marriott's Moxy brand.

The Moxy website now shows a new opening date — late 2019...

Meantime, workers have reached the eighth floor... with five more to go...
