Wait, those are make-shift shelters? That's...the worst place you could be.

I talked to the people under the umbrella tent on my bike ride this morning around 10:30 am. They are kids, and not crusty kids not that it matters. Talked to the guys under the FDR down by Chinatown too. Told them about the hurricane shelter set up at 350 Grand St and that they could die this weekend. I think they think they're gonna ride it out.

Told cops by the Seaport about it and I swear to god, one of them shrugged his shoulders. A van full of cops by Houston St were more helpful and told me about the shelter at Grand St and that they'd talk to the FDR people. I'm worried about these kids. I'm calling 311 right now.

Meant to say these homeless people could die staying out in the open on the river like this. After finally getting thru to homeless outreach , I got disconnected. What a system.

Are they serious? That really is the worst place you can be....Why would the heck would you set up shelter right near the water..If you are homeless there are better better places for you to hide out. Not near the river!!!!

Wow. Either extremely stupid or extremely ballsy. Or a combination of the two. I hope for the best for them if they decide to ride it out and just hope I don't read about them here later as victims of the storm.

Spoke to Homeless Outreach 15 minutes ago and just got a confirmation call from people dispatched to the scene just now. All the campers have already packed up and moved from this location.

I have already forwarded the pictures directly to Rosie Mendez’s office and asked her to get the appropriate agency to evacuate these people to the shelter.

You folks did the right thing, but the thing that ran through my mind was "stupid is as stupid does".
