Someone wrapped this tree on 14th Street in lights — and no one knows who or why

Someone wrapped this tree outside The Beauty Bar on 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue with strands of lights — not to mention two wall-style switches.

Beauty Bar bartender Brock Michael Napoli said the lighting happened sometime after his shift this past Sunday at 3 a.m.

"Nobody knows who did it," he told us. "All we saw on our security cams was a person in a box truck thingy with a lift."

For now it's a mystery... so might as well enjoy it...

I was hoping for a monolith but this will do.

This is against Dept of Parks rules. The landlord is responsible for the tree in front of his property and he will be fined if the lights are not removed.

Just leave it be - looks cool

Do you want to harm a tree? They are already in short supply after 1,000 of them were cut down in East River Park.

How does this hurt the tree?

A tree as opposed to a pole is a living thing. It needs sun, rain, fresh air and even wind, in other words nature, to thrive and grow. Imagine if your arm was bound by wire and lights for the rest of your life.

I don’t think the wiring is strong enough to do that much damage. It’s just some fun lights, leave it alone it won’t be there forever

umm carol ? im not trying to be sarcastic or anything but im you know once a year they acually chop down a huge tree and leave it citting in the middle of midtown in front of a ice skating rink fully decorated with lights and other things hanging from it and they acually kill this tree jus for the sake of people . with that being said this tree isnt dead and i highly dought it will die from having lights wrapped around it . lets all bast in the sake of it looking nice and maybe the tree feels a lil more loved now that its gotten noticed . oh hey maybe someone who is in charge of the well being of the tree already know . with that being said lets enjoy it ! with love

I think it’s cool too. It’s lighting the way for good things. If the landlord is in violation. I have to ask why?

Theres a few trees in my hood an they been lit up for years its not new.

Tightly wrapped lights can stunt tree growth if left on a living tree for an extended length of time. If staples were used, that harms the tree too. And additional light pollution? Really, who needs that?

Happy holidays!

It's totally cool. The more lights the better. Lights are like the nicest thing you could do to a shitty looking street. And god knows 14 St has been one of the shittiest ones around since they first started selling quaaludes and beat bags.

Did they wire the lights to that pole? I would call 311 and have that disconnected.

Oh, whoa they got into the streetlight to run wiring? Yep that is actually a 911 call…for anyone inclined.

Looks like the Karens of 14 St are out in full force.

Mystery solved! It was put up by Union Sq Partnership as a tester tree. They are considering lighting up a bunch of trees on 14th st for the holidays.
