Now $1.50, 99¢ Fresh Pizza enters a new era

Top photo by Steven

On the ever-shifting budget pizza front, new signage arrived Sunday at 71 Second Ave., marking the change from 99¢ Fresh Pizza to $1.50 Fresh Pizza here between Fourth Street and Fifth Street...
As far as we can recall, this is the first price increase for the sliceria since its debut 10 years ago. (Bring back Cool Gear!)

And 99¢ Fresh Pizza isn't the only local slice shop to up the price by 51 cents. 99¢ Pizza debuted mid-March 2023 at 418 E. 14th St., just east of First Avenue. By June, their budget slice was going for $1.50.

However, it took ownership until this past October to make the change signage official. (Thanks to EVG reader Tom for this shot from the fall...)

2+ months after opening, 99¢ Pizza raises price of $1 slice to $1.50

99¢ Pizza debuted in mid-March at 418 E. 14th St. just east of First Avenue. As noted then, despite the name of the establishment, a cheese slice initially cost a penny more — $1.

The cost of doing $1-pizza business may have caught up with them: EVG reader Tom notes that the $1 slice is now $1.50.

Subsequently, Combo #1 — two plain slices and a can of soda OR bottle or water increased from $2.99 to $3.99. Prices for Combo #2 and Combo #3 (hot dogs!) remain unchanged.

We'll see how the 99¢ Pizza shop at 246 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue responds! They lowered the price of a slice from $1.50 to 99 cents as the cheap slice war heated up.

The cheese slice is $1 at the just-opened 99¢ Pizza

Photos by EVG reader Tom

99¢ Pizza debuted last week at 418 E. 14th St. just east of First Avenue. (First reported here.)

Despite the name of the establishment, a cheese slice will cost a penny more — $1. And if you want to get fancy and add, say, pepperoni, then the price goes up to $2.50.

Here's a look at some of their combo specials...
EVG reader Edmund John Dunn tried two slices: "Not bad, IMO, better than the average for a 99-cent [or a $1!] slice."

The opening comes as the 99¢ Pizza shop at 246 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue lowered the price of a slice from $1.50 to 99 cents as the cheap slice war heats up.

A cheese slice is 99 cents again at 99 Cent Pizza on 14th Street

The price for a cheese slice is back to 99 cents now at 99 Cent Pizza, 246 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Workers switched the sign from $1.50 to 99 cents back on Monday.

Like many other bargain joints around the city, management — citing an increase in costs on everything from flour to napkins — increased the price by 51 cents in late 2021/early 2022

This move comes days after the 2 Bros. outpost on St. Mark's Place raised the price of their cheese slice from $1 to $1.50... and before the new 99-cent joint opens on 14th Street just east of First Avenue (Updated: Certified open today, per Edmund John Dunn.)

Do we hear 98 cents from any of the other discount slicerias?

Incoming 99-cent pizza shop now with 99-cent pizza signage

A variety of signage has arrived outside the incoming 99-cent pizza spot at 418 E. 14th St. just east of First Avenue.

As previously noted, this may reset the bargain pizza market... as inflation forced other local cheap-slice merchants to up the price by 51 cents to $1.50.

No word on an opening date here.

The return of 99-cent pizza?!

Signage is up for a 99-cent pizza spot at 418 E. 14th St. just east of First Avenue along a stretch known for street vendors selling items of dubious quality and origins.

If this price holds, then it would mark the return of a 99-cent pizza joint. Thanks to inflationary food costs, in late 2021 and early 2022,  the neighborhood's discount slicerias uniformly raised prices by 51 cents and became $1.50 pizzerias.

The storefront was previously a spa specializing in eyebrows and waxing.

That 99-cent slice of pizza will now cost you $1.50

As you may have recently noticed, the price of 99-cent pizza has crept up to $1.50 at neighborhood slice joints... with $1.50 signage covering the 99 cents pricing ...
This was an expected increase ... with media reports dating back to the late fall warning of an uptick thanks to inflationary food costs, the global supply-chain crisis and national labor shortage. Per the Times on Dec. 22: "The $1 Pizza Slice Becomes Inflation's Latest Victim."

Abdul Muhammad, owner of 99 Cent Fresh Pizza, the eight-location chain in Manhattan, told The Guardian last December that the continued rise in costs may force him to raise his slice prices for the first time since opening in 2001.

"I have to think about it because my customers, many of them unemployed and struggling to make rent, can't afford to pay more," he said.
Of course, the price of a slice has gone up across the board.

As Bloomberg reported earlier this month:
The "pizza principle," a mainstay of New York economics for more than four decades, states that a slice of cheese pizza will always be the same price as a subway ride.
The rule has largely held true since first conjectured in the New York Times in 1980, with any increase in pizza prices tending to predict a matching hike in public-transit fares.
Not anymore. Prices for plain slices are soaring above $3 throughout the city along with commodity and labor costs. With the Metropolitan Transportation Authority freezing fares at $2.75, the gap between the price of riding downtown and satisfying late-night hunger pangs is growing quickly.

Another pizzeria slinging 99-cent slices coming to 14th Street

A 99-cent sliceria is coming soon to the former Rainbow Nails & Spa space at 424 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and First Avenue.

EVG regular Gojira, who shared the above photo, notes that the interior "is still littered with the salon furnishings, so no idea when this is all going to happen."

This is the latest no-frills pizza shop to open around here ... a 99-cent joint opened last fall at 246 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue ... joining the September debut of 99-Cent Fresh Pizza & Hot Dog at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

Meanwhile, a New York Sal's Pizza is opening soon at 536 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

Former Hotel Tortuga space now slinging 99-cent slices on 14th Street

A 99-cent sliceria is up and running now at 246 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue... the name appears to be 99¢ Pizza with a special board highlighting 99¢ pizza.

This space was previously Hotel Tortuga, the inexpensive Mexican restaurant that bowed out at the start of 2020 after 10 years in business under two sets of owners.

The signage arrived back on Friday here at 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street...

Aside from pizza and hot dog, the small to-go shop will serve — per the sign — "sandwich, cheese bread and chicken wings."

And as previously noted, this will be the third 99-cent pizza shop on Avenue A between Houston and Ninth Street, joining Alphabet 99-Cent Fresh Pizza and 99¢ Pizza. (There's also FDR 99¢ Slice Pizza just off of A on Second Street.)

Your 99-cent pizza update on Avenue A

As a reminder (way back to March 11), a 99-cent pizza slice emporium is in the works for 131 Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

The space is shaping up, as these photos via EVG 99-cent pizza slice emporium correspondent Steven show...

This must be a successful business model: This will be the third 99-cent pizza shop on Avenue A between Houston and Ninth Street, joining Alphabet 99-Cent Fresh Pizza and 99¢ Pizza. (There's also FDR 99¢ Slice Pizza just off of A on Second Street.)

99¢ Pizza now serving 99¢ pizza on Avenue A

The discount pizzeria had its Grand Opening last evening here at 91 Avenue A at East Sixth Street.

The pizzeria is operating out of the space that last housed Benny's to-go. Not sure what's going on with the former D-Lish Pita storefront next door. There has been some work done on that space as well.

Meantime, let us know if you try this pizza. (Seriously.) We'll also post a night-time photo of the storefront some time. It is quite bright. (Seriously.)

Updated

Here it is at night... via EVG 99¢ pizza corespondent Steven...

Incoming 99¢ pizza place on Avenue A will be called 99¢ Pizza

Signage is up for the incoming 99-cent pizza dispensary at 91 Avenue A ... looks like the business is called 99¢ Pizza. (With the promise of being both "famous & fresh," per the sign.)

The pizzeria is taking the vacant space that last housed Benny's to-go right here by East Sixth Street.

How about some 99¢ pizza for Avenue A

Workers have raised the "99¢ Pizza Coming Soon" sign in between two vacant storefronts on Avenue A near East Sixth Street.

We've seen workers gutting the inside of the former Benny's to-go space in the past few days.

On either side, the former D-Lish Pita ($6k) and Benny's ($22k) storefronts remain for rent.
