13 fires in the East Village since May 2010

After hearing about the two fires yesterday in the neighborhood, many people remarked — seems as if there have been a lot of fires here of late.

Indeed, I've covered 13 since May. (I included the manhole explosion on First Avenue... though not the car that caught on fire on East Fourth Street in September.)

Thankfully, in each of these fires, there weren't any serious injuries... and as far as what has been reported, none of the fires have been deemed suspicious by authorities....

Caught on tape: New installation for Houston and the Bowery

Back in December 2009, tape artist Sam Bassett put his signature touch above the Os Gêmeos mural at Houston and the Bowery. (You can see a photo of it here at AnimalNY ... Check out the video of it too.)



On Christmas night, Bassett installed another creation above Houston at the Bowery.... which goes west to near the location of Billy's Antiques...



I asked Bassett via e-mail about the creation, and whether there was a significance with this intersection....

"I placed it there because its a central point in Manhattan, the poles line up to form the triangle, because of Billy and Billy's, because of the painting wall there," said Bassett, who was arrested in November 2009 after attempting to tape up Sotheby’s.

He continued:

"The triangle points East which represents the direction the world rotates. When we meditate in silence we face East in honor of this fact. The triangle in the sky is meant to calm, protect and inspire. To do more with less. To translate the power of reinvention and stillness. To showcase the hidden space in between, when utilized, open great possibilities of life. This ribbon sculpture is my interpretation of a Tibetan Prayer Flag. For unity and wisdom"




Meanwhile, Bassett hopes to install another tape sculpture on the former Deitch Wall, where someone quickly removed his work back in 2009. "That tape sculpture was secured like Fort Knox with very thick appoxy so it was definitely removed on purpose. If you look up to that space you can still see the faint outline of the shape. I would like to replace that tape sculpture with a painting or another tape sculpture. Thought it brought lovely energy to the intersection."

Renovations at the former Sin Sin space; 'toilet rooms' moving too

There's paper on the windows now at the former Sin Sin space on Second Avenue at East Fifth Street... according to the work permit in the window:

"Replacement of existing commercial kitchen equipment at cellar and 2nd floor kitchens. New exhaust hoods. Relocation of existing toilet rooms at 1st floor."

Meanwhile, the Sin Sin space remains on the market for $20,000 a month.

Sala is 'closed for renovation'

Sala, the Spanish tapas joint on the Bowery at Great Jones, is now closed for renovations...



...per a sign on the front door...



The eatery is also apparently for sale ... and battling an upstairs neighborhood who is suing the restaurant for noise-related issues.

Why John Legend may have problems getting the car out of the garage

The driveway here at the gated Bowery high-rise — 52E4 tower of condo — to John Legend and other fashionable people is tight to begin with... add a few humongo bags and trash and....





...passable, especially on two wheels...



Warning! While James Bond may be able to do this in "Diamonds Are Forever," please do not attempt this coming out of your own gated driveway.

Red-tailed hawk rescued on East Third Street

Yesterday, we posted the item on the red-tailed hawk that took up residency in the airshaft of an East Third Street building...

Gothamist has follow-up story this evening... The hawk, who now needs a nickname, was helped out by a resident and Yojimbot at the Origin of Species ... You can read the story here.

Timber! at the 13th Street haunted house

EV Grieve reader Adam reports that workers have returned to the abandoned building at 222 E. 13th St. And what are they doing Adam?

"Workers seem to be emptying the house of timber, which is weird. Yes, timber. As in pieces of trees. They are loading it into a pickup truck out front."

An update on this morning's East Sixth Street fire

The fire destroyed the 6th Street Kitchen this morning at 507 E. Sixth St. The owners tell Eater that "some items in the basement (the chef's toolbox) may be salvageable, but not much else. The cause was an electrical fire in the middle of the night, 'it seems to be accidental, a freak accident.'"

And from the comments:

I live in 507 - The fire appears to have originated in 6th Street Kitchen, and damage is definitely concentrated in the restaurant. Residents were woken by some explosions and the fire alarm, and escaped via the stairs, fire escapes, or the roof. Smoke damage and damage from fighting the fire is fairly extensive, but only the restaurant itself is destroyed. THANK YOU to the firemen and women who responded so quickly and saved this situation from becoming much worse. We are all very grateful.

Meanwhile, DNAinfo reports that firefighters had to return to the scene after marshals discovered a few remaining embers.

After battling two blazes this morning, Ladder 11 back in service

Members of FDNY’s Engine 28 and Ladder 11 — the two fire companies quartered at 222 E. Second St. — helped battle the two two-alarm fires early this morning. The companies were briefly Out Of Service from these fires to clean tools and gear, as well as to wait for firefighters to replace the members of E-28 and L-11 who were injured at the Sixth Street fire.

As of 10:30 a.m., Ladder 11 is back in service.

Moving forward, we'll have information on local fire company activities, including when they are closed for periods of time.

After the fire on Second Avenue and East Fourth Street

Developing: Second major fire hits the East Village this morning

We're now getting word of a second major fire this morning... Some 20 trucks are on the scene... early reports put the fire at 505 507 E. Sixth St. just east of Avenue A. One witness says it's the building that houses Eastern Bloc, where there's speculation the fire stared. No word on any injuries. [Updated 8:15 a.m.: Another reader says the fire started at 6th Street Kitchen at 507 E. Sixth St.]

[Updated] Major early-morning fire on Second Avenue and Fourth Street

According to several readers, a fire broke out on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and Fourth Street early this morning around 4:30. We're still waiting for more details. Slum Goddess has photos and a narrative here. She writes: "everyone was climbing down the fire escapes in the back of the building to get out of there. I think everyone got out safely from what I can tell."

In an e-mail to me, she writes, "It was/is nuts. No one could breathe out there."

Witnesses say the East Village Village Farm on the corner sustained extensive damage. Adrianna Grezak has more photos and information here.

DNAinfo reports that seven residents were treated for minor injuries and six were taken to Beth Israel Hospital after the fire broke out. A cockapoo named Rugby reportedly saved the lives of his owner and roommate.

Why they'll be dancing now at 55 Avenue C

Olivio's, a homey and unusual little shop (part gaming, part yarn!), closed at 55 Avenue C in July 2009 after 36 years in business. While there was a slight rent increase here near East Fourth Street, the proprietors of this father-son operation said that they simply couldn't make a go of it anymore...




Given that Avenue C of late has attracted fancy drink emporiums such as Summit and Bedlam, we figured a more-upscale business would likely take over the space.

Well, turns out something that we never quite expected is opening here this week...



The East Village Dance Project, in partnership with GOH Productions, is opening the Avenue C Studio ...





The space will offer ballet classes for kids and adults... Check out their website for more information. There are free classes being offered this week... and an open house on Sunday afternoon...
