Will 228 First Avenue become part of Taco Town?

Yesterday, Grub Street provided plenty more information about El Camion, which opens tomorrow on Avenue A at 12th Street... (They have a PDF of the El Camion menus too.)

Given El Camion's proximity to the Mercadito locations... and Diablo Royale Este... La Lucha... Benny's... San Loco...Zaragosa ... it's no wonder Daniel Maurer dubbed this "Taco Town."

Which brings me to.... last April, workers began gutting the former David's Bagels space on First Avenue near 14th Street... At the time, a nearby shopkeeper told me the space will become a Mexican restaurant. "Tacos, burritos — that kind of shit."

I haven't heard any updates about this space... and the work permits are pretty standard:

"Installation of drywall partitions, plumbing fixtures, kitchen cooking equipment in existing eating and drinking establishment. Also replacement of existing storefront with new..."

El Camion has a nice look to it, owner is a nice guy, but North Ave A just doesn't need another business with a liquor license. Just adds to the party destination quality of the neighborhood.

Anonymous at 8:53 and Anonymous at 11:48 should have a winner take all rumble!

Unfortunately, the truth is that unless you have a liquor license, there is no way you will be able to afford the rent that the landlords around north avenue A are charging. Can you name a product that you can sell that would give you the profit needed to afford the rent? Of course, if its not liquor, im sure a couple chain restaurants and banks with backing of their corporation will be able to survive...

haven't seen anybody working to ask, lately.

Yikes! With all these so called mexican places, can somebody tell me if any of these are worth checking out? (native californian here btw-ie mexican food snob) Anything at least as good as Pinchay Tacoria in Noho?

La Lucha's actually great for tacos and tamales, as is the recently opened Sabor y Mexico. what Benny's lacks in authenticity, it makes up for in classic East Village junk-food-i-ness. Never been to Zargoza, despite more or less living next door.

all other Mex places in the 'nabe are generally overpriced scenes.
