it's either an early b&t[er] showered in axe has fallen in that manhole, or, since east village is running out of space on the streets for yet another hookah joint, one opened down there
When I left for work this morning at 8:30, I walked on that block and saw the smoke (it looked more like steam to me). I didn't notice any smell. FDNY were already there accessing what it was. For the sake of the people living on that block, I hope it's nothing serious.
wonder if this has anything to do with the constant steam leak from con edison on 11th street 1-A.it's been going on for over a year.the steam has already killed one tree and is on the way to killing another one, perhaps two (in its plume).local councilmember and cb#3 have been notified numerous times.in june (2010) con edison set up a planning committee with no chair and no information).then there was that burst of steam on first avenue 10-11 posted on ev grieve late last year.
