Butter Lane leaves 7th Street for a new home in the American Dream Mall

Photos by Steven

Butter Lane has closed its East Village outpost here at 123 E. Seventh St. between Avenue A and First Avenue.

The small bakery, which offered a variety of cupcakes, baking classes and catering, winded down operations this past weekend... ahead of a move to the American Dream Mall (located across from the Angry Bird Mini Golf ticket booth) in East Rutherford, N.J.
Butter Lane debuted here in late 2008 ... with new ownership taking over in 2014.

One day last winter, I locked myself out of my apartment. I only had my phone and my two small children. The good people at Butter Lane let us hang out there until my husband was able to get off of work. They were good neighbors and will be missed.

I've been a loyal patron since I moved to 7th St in 2010. This is disappointing, if not shocking news. Their cupcakes were significantly better than many of their local competitors as the product wasn't overtly sweet. You could also chose the type of cake and frosting you wanted unlike other bakeries. The staff were warm and welcoming too. Anyway, I will sincerely miss this business in our hood. Wishing the best for their NJ location. Bye, Butter Lane.

I'm sad to see them go. Butter Lane was my go-to for last minute desserts when going to a bday party. Their cupcakes were delicious and always put a smile on people's faces.

This is bad news, more than other recent closings.

Mermaid Inn left EV for Times Square. Butter Lane left EV for the American Dream Mall in NJ...wow!

hope it works out for them, but re their hopes to see us all there: i don't think there's a lot of overlap between people who hang out in the east village and american dream.

This hurts my heart. I’ve been a loyal patron since 2010 and always got my celebratory goodies from them. Really sad. I hope they do well in NJ but damnnn what a lost for us in the EV

The end of the cupcake era in East Village. I remember at the high point, 5 years ago, there were 5 cupcake shops . And now there are none. On Wednesday’s after school I’d buy a round of cupcakes for my kids. Butter Lane was my favorite, so I will miss it. (I won’t trek to Jersey.)

Their cupcakes were great; my mother loved them and couldn't walk by there without buying some.
I happened to special-order 48 mini-cupcakes from them just last week. Their packaging/sticker had both the 7th St. address on it and the NJ mall location: Apparently both locations co-existed, and they just now closed only the EV one. If so, that seems a bit different from claiming they're "moving" from EV to NJ.
As to MrNiceGuy's comment about them being a go-to for last minute desserts: Yes, it's sad to lose them for this. But remember, we still have the absolutely delicious (even better) baked gourmet desserts just up 7th street, at 75 Degrees. Another nearby go-to for great desserts is Le Fournil, the French patisserie et boulangerie on 2nd Street at 7th, across from the burned down church. Let's keep patronizing these 2 places so we don't lose either.

I really liked them before Lisa bought them out. The cupcakes were still good when I worked there many moons ago, but I stopped going after discovering Molly’s.
