A final look at the Beastie Boys mural on 14th Street and Avenue A

Here's a last look at the completed 8-story mural of the Beastie Boys on 14th Street at Avenue A.

As previously noted, Shepard Fairey, in collaboration with the Lisa Project NYC, created this stories-high work from a photo by East Village-based photographer Glen E. Friedman. 

The mural is part of the ongoing celebration of 50 years of hip-hop.

Here's a day 2 work-in-progress look at Posse in Effect featuring the Beastie Boys, a new mural going up on the SW corner of 14th Street and Avenue A (on the east-facing wall of 436 E. 14th St.).

Shepard Fairey, in collaboration with the Lisa Project NYC, is working on the wall... from a photo by East Village-based photographer Glen E. Friedman. The work is part of the ongoing celebration of 50 years of hip hop.

Fairey, the Lisa Project and Friedman last joined forces on the Bad Brains mural last December on Bleecker at the Bowery. 

Welcoming Beastie Boys Square to the Lower East Side

You can now officially call the corner of Ludlow and Rivington Beastie Boys Square on the Lower East Side.

On Saturday afternoon, the city unveiled the new street blade during a ceremony that included remarks from founding members Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. 

The two NYC natives seem humbled by the honor, and expressed their gratitude to the city for making them who they are today. (You can watch the ceremony via the Beastie Boys' YouTube account.)

"We could not have ever been what we have become without growing up in New York City and hearing all this incredible music, being around all this incredible art, being just around all these incredible people that's only in New York City," Mike D said.

"Thank you for teaching us what to look at, what to listen to, what to wear, how to love, how to live," Ad-Rock said before delivering the afternoon's best line. "It makes me really happy to know that some kid on the way to school 50 years from now is gonna look up and say, 'What the fuck is a Beastie Boy? Why do they get a square?'" 

The ceremony included a tribute to Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died of cancer in 2012. Said Mike D: "He was our brother on this amazing journey that we all got to go through." 

This corner played a starring role on the cover of the group's iconic 1989 album Paul's Boutique. LeRoy McCarthy had been behind this effort and kept with it even after Community Board 3 voted 24 to 1 to reject the Beastie Boys Square application in January 2014. CB3 also reportedly barred McCarthy from reapplying for the street naming for five years. 

McCarthy — sporting a "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" t-shirt on a fire escape above the ceremony — received props from the crowd...

Despite the swampy weather, people packed the corner for the event, which also commemorated 50 years of hip-hop.

Saturday's opening shot

Today (9/9) at noon, the corner of Ludlow and Stanton will be officially co-named Beastie Boys Square. (Background here about LeRoy McCarthy's efforts to make this happen.)

Ahead of the ceremony, featuring Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, Brooklyn-based artist Danielle Mastrion created a new mural (her first one here dates to 2014).

The mural is based on a photo from the book "Together Forever" by East Village-based photographer Glen. E. Friedman.

Hold it now, hit it: Beastie Boys Square is finally becoming a reality on the Lower East Side

On Saturday afternoon, the corner of Rivington and Ludlow will officially be co-named Beastie Boys Square. 

This ends a nearly 10-year effort for this co-naming designation. City Council signed off on it last summer with the strong support of District 1 City Councilmember Christopher Marte.

LeRoy McCarthy has been behind this effort and kept with it even after Community Board 3 voted 24 to 1 to reject the Beastie Boys Square application in January 2014. CB3 also reportedly barred McCarthy from reapplying for the street naming for five years.

The former clothing store on the SW corner was the backdrop for the band's seminal sophomore release from 1989, "Paul's Boutique." 

The afternoon will feature appearances by Michael "Mike D" Diamond and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. (Adam "MCA" Yauch died in 2012.) There's also word of some pop-up shops...

As part of the unveiling, the 2-hour celebration features a special guest DJ set, A-1 Records & #BeastieBoys pop-up shops, live screen printing and more.

[Updated] The return of an MCA memorial mural

This past weekend the above outline for an MCA/RIP mural arrived on Seventh Street just west of First Avenue. (Not sure at the moment if this is the final product or just the start...)

Back in May, someone vandalized the MCA mural created by @cramcept at this spot.



Adam Yauch, aka MCA of the Beastie Boys, died of cancer on May 4 2012. He was 47.

As previously reported, someone destroyed the MCA tribute mural on East Seventh Street near First Avenue on Saturday night.

@cramcept, who created the previous two MCA murals, painted over this yesterday. He says that he will eventually create something new featuring MCA here.

Here is the new Beastie Boys mural in honor of 'Paul's Boutique'

This Beastie Boys mural went up this weekend on Ludlow and Rivington.

As you may have read, the mural is in honor of their second record, "Paul's Boutique," which is celebrating its 25th (!!!) anniversary.

Brooklyn-based artist Danielle Mastrion created the mural outside Wolfnights, the sandwich shop on this corner. LeRoy McCarthy, who unsuccessfully lobbied for "Beastie Boys Square" here, is also behind this project.

The storefront was once home to Lee's Sportswear, which appeared on the cover of "Paul's Boutique."

Remembering Adam Yauch in the East Village

As you likely have heard by now, Adam Yauch, aka MCA of the Beastie Boys, died today after a battle with cancer. He was 47.

Shawn Chittle points us to 171 Avenue A, former home of 171A — the studio used by the Beastie Boys to record "Polly Wog Stew" in 1982.

Per Brooklyn Vegan:

In September of 1980, Jerry Williams would begin renovating the interior of 171A. Previously the place had been a glass shop, but after moving in their PA equipment Williams went on to build a stage at the front and an audio booth in the back. By November the 171A Studio was a venue used to house after hours parties where downtown bands like the Cooties would perform [but] with a huge New Year's Eve show coming up, the New York Fire Dept. stepped in and stopped further shows from proceeding...

By now though 171A had gained a lot of name recognition around town, so instead of shutting it down completely Williams decided to change it into a rehearsal studio. At the time, most of the available rehearsal spots in New York City were tiny little rooms, but 171A offered much more. Jerry described it as being like "...a full sized room with 15 foot ceilings and a floor space 60 feet long and provided recording artists with a quality PA system suspended from the ceiling. It was a cut above other rehearsal studios and since it was about half the size of CBGB's it produced a very similar sound."

Williams, aka Jay Dublee, died in September 2010.

Bad Brains and Reagan Youth were among the other bands to record here... We hear that a few Beastie Boys fans plan to put out candles in front of 171 this evening right now.

I was reminded it that it's Spring Break for some colleges...a time when students go to warm places and drink and act dumber more than usual. Here's a clip featuring the Beastie Boys from MTV's Spring Break 1987 coverage of the wackiness in Daytona Beach. Back before the Beastie Boys became sensitive and stuff. Try not to cringe.
