A near miss with a falling window mantel on East 10th Street

Earlier this morning (around 1 a.m.?), several readers noted falling debris on East 10th Street just west of Avenue B...

Per @mattheworley: "A mantle just fell off a 3rd floor window above Blind Barber, almost falling on the line to get in. 1000 firemen outside my apt now."

We didn't hear of any injuries. This morning, EV Grieve reader Ted Roden's photos give us an idea of what happened... you can see the damage to the DSA Management awning...

Here's another shot from @rviloria ...

Bump on 10th and B sends kids to the hospital with bruises and bloody lips

Yesterday morning, 13 school kids were injured when a school bus reportedly went over a speed bump too fast, the FDNY told DNAinfo.

The students were headed to the Ross Global Academy on East 12th Street around 8:30 a.m. The accident happened at 10th Street and Avenue B, the school's executive director, Richard Burke, told Patrick Hedlund.

He said the injuries were minor, "including bumps, bruises and bloody lips."

There isn't actually a speed bump on Avenue B at 10th Street. Still, there's a pretty decent slope with some potholes. I've been sent airborne a few times on the M8 when the driver is trying to beat the light...

In any event, the city might what to take a closer look at this intersection before it gets worse than bumps and bloody lips.

Returning to the scene of last night's seizure/u-turn

A little bit ago I walked by the scene of last night's accident on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place.... in which police told Bob Arihood that a man had a seizure while making a u-turn...

Several people have noted how much potentially worse this would have been had it happened on the same time on Thursday, Friday or Saturday... and if the Sushi Lounge had been open at he time of the accident...

And we probably don't need an "Out of Order" sign for the pay phone....

Downed light pole on St. Mark's Place

Thanks to EV Grieve reader Steven Matthews for sending along these shots from earlier this evening... here on St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue... it appears a light pole fell ... no word on any injuries...

The Post helpfully diagrams yesterday's AC accident

Here's their story. As for the photo illustration that accompanied the piece in the paper, a little cartoony...but effective...

More on the man injured by the falling AC

Per the Post:

According to neighbors, [Anthony] Franzese is a Vietnam veteran who was recently evicted from his apartment on the third floor and was supposed to have vacated by this Thursday.

Man injured by falling AC on Second Avenue

[Via EaterNY]

Word is spreading of an AC unit that tumbled six stories and landed on the Winebar canopy on Second Avenue at Fourth Street. The above photo is from Eater.

According to WCBS2:

Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, 67-year-old Tony Franzese was walking his dog as he does every morning. When an air conditioner fell out of a 6th floor window at 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street, it landed on an awning apparently bounced off and hit Franzese in the head.

He suffered a severe head laceration and was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

Carmen Barreto lived in the building for 38 years and told me her son helped clean blood off the victim. “He was very upset and nervous. He said ‘Ma, the air conditioner fall down onto the head’ and I said ‘My God he must be dead’,” she explained.

“He sits here with the dog. He has a little glass of wine. He’s friends with the owner of the place here, and he’s a very nice man,” said resident Rachel Costa.

A resident who lives in the building shot this video:

Pedestrian struck by Cadillac on Third Avenue

Vautrin, a photographer whose work we have published here before, sent along these photos. As Vautrin notes, last night at 9:09, a Cadillac sedan turning from 8th Street/Astor Place onto Third Avenue struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Police arrived in due course. Ambulance from Beth Israel arrived very promptly. From the photo, the pedestrian appears to have suffered a lower right leg/ankle/foot injury. And the smile on the face of the ambulance attendant in the last photo may be taken as a relatively favorable sign.

[Updated] A bike-car collision on 14th and B?

A reliable source passes along word that there was another bike-car collision ... earlier this afternoon at 14th Street and Avenue B.... Anyone have any details?

Per a tipster:

I came by there about 5 minutes after the accident happened. It occurred on the Stuyvesant Town service road between bicycle and an Audi A6. The bicycle rider was a male in his early 20's, and the Audi driver appeared to be in his late 20's with a cast on his arm. The Audi's windshield was demolished from the bike rider going over the hood and hitting it, and the bike was damaged too. The biker didn't appear too hurt, as he had some gauze on his right arm, I believe was put on by a ST security guard.

Did the Bean reopen too soon?

Not a criticism, just a question. After the horrific crash late Saturday night, I talked with several people who were surprised to see the Bean reopened Sunday morning at First Avenue and Third Street... Given the gory details that I heard, I was surprised too... One of the most severely injured, 71-year-old Preston Krupin, was sitting inside the Bean...

I made note of the reopening on Sunday morning...

On Sunday morning, a woman walked by carrying flowers... which she laid on the street. "Someone needs to put flowers here," she said.

On Monday morning, I heard maybe a dozen people in about 20 minutes time make mention of the crash....

It seemed to become a ghoulish point of interest.

An update on yesterday's early-morning crash on First Avenue

There are several follow-up stories to yesterday's horrific crash at First Avenue and Third Street. At the Post, six reporters got a byline for their report. A few details from their piece:

The injured:
Preston Krupin, 71, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital with neck and back injuries after the out-of-control cab mowed him down as he sat in The Bean on First Avenue and Third Street around 1:20 a.m.

Krupin, who lives near the shop, was in serious but stable condition yesterday morning, but hours later, doctors performed a lengthy operation. He was said to be in recovery last night.

The accident occurred as cabby Syed Nazir, 49, was driving up First Avenue with a passenger, Kristin Kunkel, in the back seat.
He collided with a Jeep Cherokee driven by Robert Batista, 19, who was trying to turn onto the avenue from East Third Street.
Nazir swerved, but hit the Jeep anyway, and then jumped a bike lane and curb.

He hit two men riding bicycles, and finally stopped after smashing through The Bean's front window.

"All I remember is that he was swerving," said Kunkel, 30, who lives in Midtown. "I put my hands in front of my face, and the next thing I knew, I was in the coffee shop.

The young woman lost two front teeth in the crash.

The two bicyclists were in stable condition. Nazir suffered back and neck injuries.
Batista kept going after the accident, but then pulled over and stepped out, looking dazed, one witness said.
Police administered blood-alcohol tests to the drivers, and the results for both were negative.

The scene:
Jordyn Thiessen, who lives across the street from the site, called it a "devastating scene."

"I was helping hold one of the bicyclists. He was on his side bleeding profusely from his head," she said. "I was saying prayers that everyone would be OK."

Thiessen added that First Avenue has had at least three accidents in the last month since a concrete barrier had been installed to create a separate lane for bicyclists.

"I think a lot of people are really thrown off," by the changes, she said.

One of the incidents she described involved a pedestrian getting struck by a cyclist.

"The bicyclists are not following the rules," she said. "They are going through red lights. They are just speeding along the way."

Police were not able to immediately confirm the incidents she cited.

The reconfiguration of First Avenue for bike lanes is currently being discussed in the comments here.

[Updated] Out-of-control cab kills one, injuries six on First Avenue and Third Street

[Updated 10:46 a.m.] Other news outlets are reporting that five people were injured in the accident. Earlier, WPIX had reported a fatality in the accident. CBS 2 and the Daily News are reporting five injuries: two cyclists, the cab driver and his passenger; and a 71-year-old man who was inside the Bean. Meanwhile, police are working to determine who is to blame for the accident.

Per the Daily News:

The taxi was heading north on First Ave. when it collided with the Jeep, which was turning onto the avenue from E. 3rd St., police said. The taxi jumped the curb, hitting and injuring two bicyclists before smashing into the coffee shop.

Earlier...

According to reports, an out-of-control cab jumped onto the sidewalk early this morning and slammed into a group of six people, killing one, according to WPIX.

The cab careened into a crowd of people standing in front of the Bean Coffee Shop on First Avenue at Third Street around 1:30 a.m.

Five other people were also injured and were taken to Bellevue Hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known, WPIX reports.

The driver was transporting a passenger when the accident occurred.

The images below were taken by Vautrin and Stacie Joy, who were returning from a photo shoot at the time of the accident. Stacie told me they tried to help comfort those who were injured before EMS crews arrived.

A reader notes that the cab struck a cyclist, pinning the person under the vehicle.

Woman struck by vehicle on Avenue C and 10th Street

Just after noon, a woman walking west on 10th Street across Avenue C was struck by a vehicle turning left...

Police and emergency vehicles responded in a near instant...

There was no discussion of blame — the driver or the pedestrian. Everyone was concerned about the victim's status. She was moving. Paramedics put a neck brace on her as a precaution and placed her inside an ambulance. Meanwhile, a police officer used a fire extinguisher to spray a pool of blood that had collected in the middle of Avenue C.

Updated 6/1: Bus hits pedestrian on Essex and Canal

From a reader:

Today at 11:48 AM Lucky Star hit an older Chinese man outside of my window at the corner of Essex/Canal. He will more than likely die from the injuries. Bystanders thought they were helping and started to drag the man from under the bus. I along with others got them to stop, but damage may have been done. I hope he lives. ... FDNY was on scene within 2 minutes of the accident and acted quickly to free the man and send him off to the hospital. From what I could see from afar, the injuries along with his accelerated age, it does not look promising.

Still waiting to hear more on this from the mainstream media... nothing yet... The reader who sent me the original information passed along another message...

The whole scene was cleaned up by the time I sent you the photo. All that remains is the sand the firemen spread to cover his blood. They did not remove his shoe from the middle of the street. It's a very sad reminder of what may have been this man's last few moments. The whole incident took place and disappeared within 40 minutes. These buses are dangerous and the drivers some times don't pay attention like they should. The man was in the middle of the crosswalk -- there's no way the driver didn't see him.

DNAinfo has more on the story. According to police, the man's injuries are no considered life-threatening.

Scenes from last night's accident on 12th Street via Twitter

Last evening, an EV Grieve reader passed along an e-mail saying there had been an accident on 12th Street near First Avenue: "5 folks hit according to cops nobody seriously injured." (I was busy at the time looking for models on Avenue A.)

East Village resident Chris O'Leary (who also blogs, blogs about beer and tweets) tracked down what happened via Twitter....: "According to the cop outside, it was a drunk driver who fled on foot. Happened around 6pm."

And Chris tracked down these photos at the scene from Twitter users....

(Updated) Female cyclist dies after getting struck by bus on Delancey and Ludlow

Here's what ABC-7 is reporting now:

A woman riding a bicycle was struck by a school bus and died from her injuries on the Lower East Side Tuesday.

Authorities say the woman was hit by the bus, operated by Atlantic Express, just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of Delancey and Ludlow streets.

There were reportedly two children on board the bus at the time. Officials say neither was injured.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

BoweryBoogie has more.

UPDATED:
NY1 has more horrific details.

A witness says the woman was riding her bicycle on Delancey when she hit a pothole and fell behind the bus, which then backed over her.

"She was just trying to get away from the school bus and the school bus just kept driving, and it was getting closer and closer to her. And everybody's screaming at him, 'There's somebody behind you!' And she was trying to avoid the pothole, but once she hit the pothole, that's when she fell over," said one witness.

Police say there is no criminality at this time.

According to StreetsBlog:

The intersection is just a few blocks away from the entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge. Since 2008, volunteer group Adopt-a-Bike Lane has been advocating for a protected bike path on this stretch of Delancey. "This is tragic news -- no one should risk his or her life to get to and from the most popular bridge for biking in the country," said Adopt-a-Bike Lane coordinator Marin Tockman. "We can only hope that in the wake of such sad news that our city officials do something to improve this essential corridor."

BikeBlogNYC notes that this tragey occurred just two days after the fifth annual Memorial Ride throughout the city to remember those cuclists who were killed on the streets in 2009.

I'm not a cyclist...it seems like Delancey leading up to the Williamsburg Bridge is treacherous at best. Per Boomshanka at StreetsBlog:

delancey is a mess, and always extremely dangerous for bikers and pedestrians. i don't ever cross against the light, and sometimes don't even when i have a walk signal.

theres definitely been a policy decision made that moving traffic on and off the bridge gets priority over safety. even tonight traffic police were waving cars through reds in front of me as i was crossing the street with a walk signal.

the only traffic enforcement i routinely see is a block-the-box ticket trap on orchard and delancey, taking advantage of the poorly timed traffic lights at allen. not only is this unfair to drivers (i can see that and i don't drive) but it makes the orchard/delancey intersection extremely dangerous for pedestrians.

When moose attack at hipster LES hotspots

From the AP wire...

NEW YORK -- A restaurant-goer says she was struck by the decor at a Manhattan restaurant -- but not in a visual way.

Raina Kumra says in a negligence lawsuit filed last week that a stuffed moose head plummeted off a wall and onto her head at the Scandinavian-themed White Slab Palace on Oct. 4. She says she suffered a concussion and other injuries after being hit by the 150-pound moose head, adorned with 3-foot-wide antlers.

The owner of the Lower East Side restaurant didn't immediately return a telephone message. Nor did Kumra, who is representing herself in the case.

She's seeking unspecified damages. The lawsuit was filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Broadway cab crash leaves six injured

Just saw this on WCBS:

A pair of taxicabs collided in the East Village Sunday night, careening into a sidewalk scaffolding and leaving six people injured.

The two cabs crashed and, in the process, brought down the scaffolding, and were left under the mangled mess hours after the accident.

A witness tells CBS 2 that one of the cabs tried to overtake the other before the two collided and careened across Broadway at the corner of E. 8th Street, jumping the curb and coming to rest on the sidewalk under the scaffolding.

Gothamist has more photos. Looks like the Gap was taken out in the accident.

And this was the second crash involving cabs in the neighborhood yesterday.

Crash at KFC?

We heard that there was an accident at the KFC on 14th Street and Second Avenue earlier today. No reports of injuries. The restaurant was also likely closed at the time. According to the tipster, the window on the 14th side "was smashed in, and the furniture, etc. was smashed to smithereens like a car had driven through the window. Anyway, there wasn't any police tape or anything blocking off the area ... "

Photos anyone?

Police car jumps curb at Avenue D and Fifth Street; nine people hospitalized

From a summation of various reports from late yesterday afternoon: A police car, responding to a call, was speeding on Avenue D when it made a left turn onto Fifth Street, toward Avenue C, when it collided with a white Cadillac. (The accounts vary on which vehicle struck first.) Witnesses say the officer turned on his siren and, seconds later, lost control, jumped the curb and hit a crowd of people on the sidewalk. The Times reports today that nine people were hospitalized, including an infant, and are in stable condition.

Three TV news outlets were on the scene: NY1, WPIX and Telemundo 47.

Bob Arihood was there shortly after the accident occurred, and has many dramatic photos.
