'The last great free piece from Billy's'

On Friday, Billy Leroy put this solid walnut breakfront cabinet out for anyone to take. As of early this afternoon, it was still there, surprisingly well-preserved after a weekend of weather.

"It's the last great free piece from Billy's," he told us.

Billy's is now closed here on Houston near the Bowery for the next year or so to make way for a new two-story structure.

Celebrating Ray's 79th birthday with Justine Joli

Last night, a few friends and neighbors gathered at Ray's Candy Store on the eve of the proprietor's 79th birthday (it's officially on Wednesday).

As always, someone provided entertainment for Ray's birthday.

But first — the cake.

As for the entertainment, say hello to Justine Joli.

Anyway, the annual birthday cheer is always a boost to Ray's spirits, a brief break from the 24/7 grind of the store and reminder how much people appreciate him...

Thanks to Shawn Chittle for the photos.

And here are photos by Bob Arihood of previous Ray birthday celebrations... 2010 ... and 2009...

7-Eleven continues to feast on the East Village; next up, St. Mark's Place

Last week, we told you that a 7-Eleven was taking over a storefront on East 14th Street.

And now, we regret to inform you that a 7-Eleven will soon be opening on St. Mark's Place at Second Avenue, in the former J.A.S. Mart. (The official address is 133 Second Ave.)

Permits on file with the DOB confirm the arrival.

So, from here on out, it's probably safe to assume that any empty storefront with DOB work permits will either be a 7-Eleven or Subway.

Sidewalk shed arrives at 86 E. Fourth St.

Usually not a newsy item to note. A sidewalk shed. Which workers put up on Friday. However, as we've reported, several current tenants have said that they are wary of the future after RURU & Associates bought the building here at Second Avenue.

Several current and former tenants have said that the new management is declining to offer new leases as current leases expire. (Read more on this here ... and here ... and here)

Nothing sinister via the DOB about the sidewalk shed, which the city OK'd on Thursday:

ALTERATION TYPE 3 - CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT - SIDEWALK-SHED
PROPOSED INSTALLATION OF HEAVY DUTY SIDEWALK SHED FILED FOR REMEDIAL REPAIRS AS
PER PLANS. NO CHANGE IN USE OCCUPANCY OR EGRESS UNDER THIS APPLICATION.

...and the sidewalk shed quickly offered some shelter...

Have other tips or photos about the situation here? Please send them our way via the EV Grieve email

Thanks to our friend Matt Rosen for the tip about the sidewalk shed.

Fishing for rodents at the Mystery Lot

Work continues at the Mystery Lot. Next up! Baiting.

This past Thursday the Post confirmed what's coming here — an 82-unit, eight-story development, which should break ground this summer for a late 2013 opening. "Prices are still to be determined for the project’s studio and one-, two- and three-bedroom units," according to the Post.

By the way, with this new building on the way, you'll need to find somewhere else to dump your Christmas holiday trees.

Empellon Cocina now hiring for 'highly anticipated opening'

During the weekend, we saw workers puttering around with a new awning at Empellon Cocina (the former home of Counter), the First Avenue outpost of chef Alex Stupak's West Village Mexican eatery....

...we took a closer look and spotted a hiring sign of sorts...

"This is going to be one of the most highly anticipated openings of 2012 and we have set high standards for ourselves."

Now you know.

Sonar Gaow 'temporarily closed due to a plumbing problem'

That's the sign on the gate outside Sonar Gaow, one of the Indian restaurants on East Sixth Street... Just so happens to coincide with a closure last Thursday via the Department of Health, who handed out 49 violation points for the usual various critters.

This is one of those places that people have complained about for being "dirty" in the past, such as this post from Eater in 2008.

Turns out the Penistrator did taint the first snowfall of the year

Our correspondents kept a watchful eye out for any sign of The Penistrator or various copycats after yesterday's Storm of the Saturday® ... Finally, reports are coming in from the field... on St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue...

Looks as if we're in for another long winter.

Memorial for Mary Spink tomorrow

As you may have heard, Mary Spink, the community activist and executive director of Lower East Side People’s Mutual Housing Association, died on Monday. She was 64. As The Lo-Down first reported, she had been battling a failing liver and kidneys.

She was a well-respected member of Community Board 3. Spink has had a long, varied career. Per The Lo-Down: "After arriving in the city as a teenager, she owned and operated a dress shop, a newsstand and a hardware store. She was a cook, a record promoter, a brick layer, a dancer, a waitress, a plumber, an office manager, a superintendent and a property manager. She served as Director of Drug Prevention for the Archdiocese of New York."

She volunteered as a board or committee member at more than 20 organizations including 19 years as a board or committee member of the LES Peoples Federal Credit Union, 14 years as a board member of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, and for nine years served as a board member and Chair of the Lower Eastside Girls Club.

"Mary was a feminist in a league with Emma Goldman, a community activist in a league with Jane Jacobs, a personality in a league of her own," Lyn Pentecost, executive director of the Lower Eastside Girls Club, told me via email. "Without Mary as our Board Chair in our critical years — we would not be building a. Girls Club today."

Tomorrow at 5:30, community members will take part in a service at Cooper Union (Seventh Street and Third Avenue).
