A round-up of the old-school Chinese restaurants in the East Village

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

The neighborhood has temporarily lost two reasonably priced quick-serve Chinese restaurants this year — A&C Kitchen on Avenue C after a fire in the courtyard and Asian Taste on Third and B due to a gas shutoff in the building

In addition, New Double Dragon closed on First Avenue with the pending demolition of a three-building parcel.

So it seems like there aren’t as many options for pork fried rice, sesame chicken and beef with broccoli these days. So, we decided to take inventory. I recruited local Chinese food enthusiast Josh Davis (an EVG contributor under the name jdx) to help me visit the remaining old-school East Village options.

Here's our list. (Have we left any out? And note: We stayed between Houston and 16th Street, Avenue D to Third Avenue.)

• Chen's Express Kitchen: 223 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue
(Menu here)
• Baji Baji: 145 First Ave. between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street
(Instagram account here)
• China Wok: 63 Avenue D between Fifth Street and Sixth Street
(Menu here)
• Fei Ma: 79 Avenue A between Fifth Street and Sixth Street
(Menu here)
• M&J Asian: 600 E. 14th St. at Avenue B
(Website here)
• Mee Noodle: 223 First Ave, between 13th Street and 14th Street
(Yelp info here)
• No 1 Kitchen: 265 First Ave. between 15th Street and 16th Street
(Website here)
• Red House: 203 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue
(Website here)
• Yang’s Happy Wok: 175 Avenue C between 10th Street and 11th Street
(Website here)
While we miss some mid-2000s casualties like Bamboo House and Jade Mountain, a decent variety of restaurants remain.

Let us know in the comments if you have a favorite from this list...

A report of a small fire at Dua Kafe on 14th Street

Updated the location of the fire. And an update via Dua: "We should be opening up again very soon (the plan is tomorrow!) since the damage was relatively minimal outside of the bathroom space."

On Wednesday night around 10:30, there was a report of a fire in the bathroom at Dua Kafe, 520 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B. (Thanks to EVG reader Russell K. for the top photo.

The FDNY reported an "under control" from the scene in less than 15 minutes. (Dua has a posted closing time of 10 p.m.)

EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by yesterday... fortunately there was little evidence of any fire, including smoke or water damage.

Workers at a neighboring business said that there was a small electrical fire in the back and "everything should be fine again soon."

In the meantime, there are there is a "closed for renovation" sign up at the restaurant specializing in Albanian cuisine (read a Times review of the space here) ...

City removes charred and tagged Acura from Houston Street

This morning, the city removed the remains of the charred and tagged Acura from Houston Street at Allen... EVG regular Salim caught the transport in action as the car (and one in a similar state) headed north on First Avenue just past 14th Street.

The driver of the Acura crashed it into a pole early Sunday (4:50 a.m.) at Houston and Allen. After the collision, the car caught fire. We're told no one was injured.

Beat happening: A plaque unveiling at the former residence of Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs

Tomorrow evening, Village Preservation is unveiling a plaque outside the former residence of Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs on Seventh Street.

The event takes place outside 204-206 E. Seventh St. between Avenue B and Avenue C, where the two lived in a third-floor apartment in the early 1950s. According to NYU's Grey Art Gallery, "Ginsberg took some of his best-known photographs of the Beats in this apartment, on the building's roof, and on the fire escape."

We will install a plaque to commemorate the Beat Generation at a building where Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs lived early in their careers. The two and occasional visitor Jack Kerouac formed the nucleus of this influential post-war countercultural movement. We will hear excerpts from their work and a discussion of the importance of the Beat Generation and of these authors' early work.
The festivities begin at 5:30. Village Preservation asks attendees to register here in advance.

Ginsberg lived in multiple apartments in the neighborhood from the 1950s to his death in 1997, including 170 E. Second St., 704 E. Fifth St., 408 E. 10th St., 437 E. 12th St. and 404 E. 14th St.

This week in film-TV shoots

There's a busy week ahead for filming around the East Village ... tomorrow sees "Big Indie Smith" shooting along Avenue A and Tompkins Square Park (and 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B).

"Big Indie Smith" is code for a TV series remake of the 2005 Brad-and-Angelina vehicle "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Donald Glover and Maya Erskine (taking over for Phoebe Waller-Bridge) are the leads in this series for Amazon Prime.

Also!
Notices are up along Fourth Street between Second Avenue and the Bowery for "Brass Tactics" ... code for the upcoming Apple+ series "City on Fire" based on the 2015 book by Garth Risk Hallberg. (We wrote about this production here.) Both BT pics by Derek Berg

Crews were prepping Rivington Guitar (Pawn Shop!) today for tomorrow's shoot ...
LAST BUT NOT LEAST.

The "Gossip Girl" reboot for HBO Max will be filming along Avenue A and some side streets (like Fourth) on Thursday and Friday... pic by Stacie Joy...
Live team coverage TK.
