Report: Fireball in the sky above the East Village
From an EV Grieve reader last night:
Anyone see this? Do you have any ideas or explanation as to what this may have been? (And no Lady GaGa jokes, please.)
Two people just saw a fireball in the sky moving from west to east above the EV. Was sighted from the rooftop on 3rd street and ave B. Both people said it looked like a burning ball of fire, but did not go out as expected as it climbed from 50' to several hundred in seconds.
Thought it was a Chinese lantern at first, but if that was the case it should have blown out. Couldn't be a flare because it was a flame and not dropping sparks.
Anyone see this? Do you have any ideas or explanation as to what this may have been? (And no Lady GaGa jokes, please.)
Gotta go to Joe's
Joe Jr's shuttered over the weekend. However, you can still enjoy Joe Junior on Third Avenue at 16th Street. I believe both Joe's were once owned by the same family, though the places operated independently.
From FroYo to dry cleaning
As Hunter-Gatherer noted this past January, öko frozen yogurt at 137 First Avenue near Ninth Street "closed for renovations" after just six months at the location...
"Closed for renovations" after six months, of course, is simply code for "we're out of business." Sure enough, the location never reopened.
Now, coming to this site: A dry cleaners.
By my count, this makes the fourth dry cleaners to open in the East Village this year.

There are still two öko frozen yogurt shops in New York: Park Slope and Forest Hills.

Bubble tea joint coming to East 10th Street
Just west of Avenue A on East 10th Street. ThirsTea. The sign says they will serve "bubble tea, drinks and snacks." I can't even remember what was in here before. A kid's shop? A Brazilian jeans shop?
Au revoir, Bounce Deuce
As Eater reported last week, Bounce Deuce looked suspiciously closed.
And over the weekend, rather vague confirmation signs went up....
Just closed for the summer...?

Joe Jr's has closed
I thought that Joe Jr's was closing today. As you likely read (via Serious Eats, Eater, Grub Street, David Kamp or the Times), the iconic diner on Sixth Avenue at 12th Street was calling it a day. So I wanted to stop by one last time for a meal. Not to write about -- Jeremiah and Brooks both have eloquent posts on the topic.
Anyway, was too late. Joe's has already closed. (And the Joe Jr's on the corner of the sign is missing...)
There's a sign on the front window for people to leave messages...thanking Joe's for the memories, etc.
Meanwhile, the interior has already been pulled apart.
And the bat!
Back out front, a man remarked to his girlfriend: "All the great old places we like have been destroyed."
Anyway, was too late. Joe's has already closed. (And the Joe Jr's on the corner of the sign is missing...)

When EV Grieve tried to take the train out east this weekend
Don't mind all these Penn Station photos. Bored. Was trying to go Belmont Park the other day. First post for the race: 1 p.m. Unfortunately, no one told this to the LIRR, who thought the first post was 3 p.m. So there wasn't a train for the 75 or so people standing around waiting to go to Belmont. Eventually, an LIRR manager type came out to talk to the group and offer an apology, but blamed Belmont officials for the snafu. Another train was promised, though after waiting an additional 45 minutes, we got antsy and left for plan B.

Walkman this way
Wow — the Sony Walkman was introduced 30 years ago this week. Which reminds me. I recently busted out my portable AM-FM/cassette Walkman from a long time ago. I needed a radio for something. Anyway, I was inspecting the Walkman on a crowded 4 train. And I discovered a tape was in the Walkman. XTC's "Skylarking"! (Had I used this thing since, say, 1986?) I was fumbling around with the batteries. Then I realize. These two recent-college-grad types are looking at me in mild disbelief and horror, perhaps. Like I'm poor or low-tech and can't have an iPod. When the tape rewinds, I give them a nod and press play.
