Video shows NYPD using pepper spray during 'Occupy Wall Street' march

As you may have read, the NYPD arrested nearly 80 people near Union Square yesterday in the “Occupy Wall Street” march.

This video that someone sent us shows NYPD officers shooting pepper spray and tackling people participating in the march on 12th Street near University Place.

According to WCBS, "The NYPD, on the record, called every arrest justified." Gothamist has more here.

Here's another frame-by-frame video showing the NYPD using the pepper spray on women behind a barricade on 12th Street...

Bob Arihood has a video with one of the women who was spray right here.

The protesters went outside the boundaries of their permit and defied the officers' telling them to head back. They get what they deserve. If they wanted to walk further uptown, they should have gotten the permit for that. Instead, the brats, under the delusion they were peaceably exercising their 'free speech', got what was coming to them.

Thanks for the explanation mr. Hedge Fund.

@ Anon 12;32 - That is some weak sh*t on your part. IF the protestors were somehow breaking the law then they should be arrested. The police are not allowed to summarily act as judge, jury, and executioner. It's called due process.

@anon--the only good thing you said is that they thought they were exercising their right to free speech. The amendments to the constitution are being defiled and ignored and destroyed right in front of our faces. This is another valid point. These kids are making important points and being victimized.

this is beyond disturbing.
we are allowed to disagree and to protest.
that is what we are supposed to be fighting for all over the world. "FREEDOM"
it is ridiculous to pepper-spray a group of protesters because they "exceeded the boundaries of their permit". free speech does not require a permit.
while the protesters might have been loud, and perhaps "disrespectful of authority", they did not appear to be violent or aggressive.
a murderer is treated with more respect.
the SS said that they "were just doing their job".

Peaceful protest is no justification for brutal police action. In fact, this sort of irresponsible use of force by the police is simply unlawful--for important reasons such as limiting the use of force by the state against its own citizens.

punk-ass police

Yup, justice has to be evenhanded, and lawbreakers should get the treatment they deserve. Spraying mace indiscriminately is assault and battery, which is a crime. Criminals should be punished.

AnonymASSes 12:32 + 3:33: Hows about we pepper spray you, hog tie you and kidnap you for a few days if we don't like the way you express yourself? You sound like the same cowardly NYPD riot pig to me!

It's soooo easy to jump a bunch of peaceniks, esp. when you have truncheons and guns and all that spray while they're unarmed and don't put up much of a fight, eh?

Ever tried going after an equally armed group? I think not! What does that make YOU?

What do you think happens when folks are not able to express themselves peacefully without getting jumped by a gang of armed thugs? Do you really want to turn things up a few notches and have them give you a REAL fight next time?

Yeah, wow, they were protesting outside the boundaries of their permit. Jesus, they just shoulda shot 'em, then. Or lit them on fire with flamethrowers or something.

How dare they cause a ripple in the perfectly placid waters of Bloomie's New York. Wonder how these cops would've fared in the 70s? Maybe in the South Bronx or East New York? A lot of police I see these days are way too fat to run from a gang or real criminals.

WE ARE ALL ONE

Deputy Inspector Anthony V. Bologna of the NYPD Patrol Borough Manhattan South.

THAT's the cowardly asshole caught on video (http://www.commondreams.org/further/2011/09/26-1) spraying demonstrators safely tucked behind police lines ("pig pens") where they couldn't fight back.

When a white-shirted ranking kop pulls this kind of shit, the message being sent to his underlings is that it's OKAY to abuse people this way.

This asshole has GOT to go!!!!
