David Schwimmer: 'My plan is to demonstrate that we're good neighbors'

[Photo from last August via EVG reader Marc]

East Village resident David Schwimmer is directing "Sex With Strangers," a two-character production now underway at the Second Stage Theatre.

He discussed the play and his return to his theater roots in a Wall Street Journal article yesterday. (Subscription required.)

Writer Lizzie Simon doesn't let him off without bringing up his newish home on East Sixth Street. It's also the first time that Schwimmer has discussed his move to this neighborhood in the media, as far as we can recall.

As it turns out, Second Stage isn't the only place in New York where Mr. Schwimmer feels pressure to prove himself. He bought and in 2011 demolished a historic townhouse in the East Village, replacing it with a six-story mansion, angering preservationists. "Ross is not cool" was spray-painted on a construction board outside his home, photos of which went viral.

"I never responded. I haven't talked about it," Mr. Schwimmer said. "My plan is to demonstrate that we're good neighbors."

This next portion of the article did not appear in the print version of the Journal.

A recent crime-fighting assist might have aided his case. In May, security footage that he shared with detectives helped them catch the assailant in a stabbing that happened on his street. "I had it on three different cameras," Mr. Schwimmer said.

The East Village was the New York neighborhood that most closely resembled where his wife, Zoe Buckman, was raised in east London. "She fell in love with it when we were walking around," he said. "It's incredibly diverse economically, racially, culturally. We really hope that in time we'll just be accepted totally by everyone."

Report: David Schwimmer's surveillance footage helps NYPD in male prostitute stabbing

David Schwimmer's high-tech surveillance system helped the NYPD with details about a stabbing that took place early this morning at 333 E. Sixth St.

According to the Post, a 26-year-old john refused to pay a 21-year-old male prostitute for his services … and the slashing occurred as a result … "and eventually spilled into the hallway with the men smashing through a glass lobby door."

Schwimmer, who lives next door, let detectives into his home to watch the surveillance footage.

The 26 year old was taken to Bellevue with stab wounds while the 21 year old was treated at Beth Israel for slashes on his arms.

Meanwhile, blood stains remain on the stoop at No. 333.

This will likely be our last post about David Schwimmer's gate, probably

Hey, just bringing this important story to some closure. Last week we noted that the plywood came down at Chez Schwimm's over on East Sixth Street. A temporary fence of sorts went up… with word of a new, architecturally pleasing new gate to come. Yep, take a look above —— it has arrived. Now just pick a door… any door…

Today in posts about a new fence for David Schwimmer's house

Workers finally removed the plywood from outside David Schwimmer's new place over on East Sixth Street yesterday.

By last evening, a reader noted a new, temporary (unless he's opening a shitty club here) fence was in place…

Neighbor Michael Hirsch heard from someone official involved with the new home that workers will be erecting "a historically acceptable" fence … something similar to the gate outside the synagogue a few doors away…

In addition, Michael heard that the city is expected to issue the final Certificate of Occupancy next week. The temporary CofO on file with the city currently shows one dwelling unit ...

… which may shoot down some theories readers had about the building being chopped into four separate residences. Still doesn't explain the four doors, though.

David Schwimmer mansion makes list of '10 Most Controversial NYC Developments in 2013'

NewYork.com's real estate section unleashed a year-end listicle — 10 Most Controversial NYC Developments in 2013.

All the big ones are there — from Willets Point to the Domino Sugar Factory to 5Pointz.

And cracking the list at No. 10 — our very own David Schwimmer, who, perhaps one day, may actually move into 331 E. Sixth St.

Anyway, here is New York.com recapping Chez Schwimm:

David Schwimmer’s Townhouse, East Village
This spring the scaffolding finally came down from around actor David Schwimmer’s East Village townhouse, which has outraged nearby residents for years. In 2011 he demolished the original structure, built in 1852 and considered the oldest townhouse on the block, before it could receive landmark status in 2012. What followed was years of construction, falling debris and angry notes from neighbors, include the graffiti, “Ross is not cool” scrawled on nearby plywood in August as a welcome note to the Friends actor, who played Ross on the hit show. The result: a totally bland brick facade on a six-story mansion with a rooftop terrace.

A scene from yesterday morning over on East Sixth Street, where David Schwimmer is apparently moving into a newly created mansion ... someone left the above message on the plywood for the actor who played Ross Geller on "Friends" ... Marc, who lives across the street, snapped the photo and noted that workers later painted over the Rossffiti.

Schwimmergate

Several readers noted the arrival yesterday of a chain-link fence around the almost-done-on-the-outside-looking David Schwimmer home on East Sixth Street. No word if this is just temporary until workers dig the moat.

Here comes David Schwimmer's rooftop garden

EVG reader Eva notes that there's a special delivery being, um, delivered to David Schwimmer's new Mansion this morning on East Sixth Street.

"There is a lot getting dropped onto the roof of the Schwimmer manse.

Trees and a huge silo shaped thing just landed. Yes, full-grown trees are being hoisted onto the roof.

Eva promises to alert us when (if!) the Belize Oval II Hot Tub Spa goes up...

Let's take a look at David Schwimmer's East Village mansion

Well, you can now see more of David Schwimmer's new mansion on East Sixth Street, as Curbed pointed out yesterday...

We took a photo ourselves. Still got some plywood to go for the full reveal.

Thoughts? One Curbed commenter said: "Nice windows, brick looks like burger king."

And a few other comments:

"not sure why a multi-million dollar celebrity would want to live in such an ugly building with tenements on either side."

"I heard that it's a meth lab."

Looking at David Schwimmer's bricks

Oh, well, on a few of those recent sunny days (Saturday-Monday) ... the light was hitting the construction netting just right at 331 E. Sixth St., providing a glimpse of the new home that David Schwimmer — or someone he sells it too, if you want to go that way — will live in here between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

By the way, the saga story here is now entering its 14th month, starting with the demolition in the August 2011 of the circa 1852 townhouse that once stood here, a home described as an "Oasis in the East Village" ... 14 months of demolition and subsequent construction. Neighbors, how has that been going for you?

David Schwimmer's brick job

Nearly two months have passed since we last looked at 331 E. Sixth St., the new home for David Schwimmer or at least someone who looks and sounds like him.

It's tough to make out what's happening under the construction netting... But!

You can see the single-family mansion's brick facade taking shape...

Spotted on the plywood outside the incoming David Schwimmer Estate on East Sixth Street...

Friday, July 20, 2012

Will people still be able to sleep on the sidewalk near David Schwimmer's house once he lives there?

Whenever I walk by the incoming Schwimmer Estate on East Sixth Street in the morning, I usually spot some people sleeping on the sidewalk two doors to the east... in front of the new cafe that's opening...

As far as I can tell, they are travelers... likely around just for the summers, of course. But other people who have camped near here have been a little more permanentat least when they weren't going to Rikers.

Anyway, once the Schwimmer Clan moves in, do you think they'll be OK with people sleeping so close to their million-dollar home? Maybe that's part of the flavor of living here? Or perhaps he'll have the 9th Precinct keep the area free of any sidewalk sleepers... sending them up the block...

Guess we'll find out soon enough.

And here's how the Schwimmer Estate was looking as of yesterday....

Breaking: Huge truck parks outside the David Schwimmer mansion — but why?

A tipster passes along the following photo from outside David Schwimmer's incoming home at 331 E. Sixth St.:

Per the tipster:

Another "what is it?" moment ... as the Schwimmer Shack gets a monster delivery (of delicious shakes and tasty burgers, maybe?). Note that the huge truck is heading in the wrong direction.

Shakes and burgers aside ... what else might be inside...?
