Meanwhile, I recently walked into the flagship Kiehl's on Third Avenue and 13th Street... and I thought I had entered, say, Barneys.

Kiehl's isn't the same since it was sold to L'Oreal. It's just a brand.
I fondly remember my musician friends stopping by for bottles of ginseng extract and tincture of valerian root when they had gigs at the Academy. Now they just sell insanely expensive face cream.

I remember in the late 80s/early 90s when the window displays included cool, individualistic stuff like large photos of old man Kiehl landing a plane on the deck of an aircraft carrier; now it's just precious and boring. But the motorcycles are still fun to ogle.
old man kiehl had drove a rolls royce to the store and piloted a plane well into his 70's.
the store was small and the folkd there knew almost everyone that shopped there.
they hired neighborhood people who gave out pieces of licorice or sugar cane to children, many of whose names they knew.

L'oreal?? Egads. I depend on kiehls to maintain my youthful complexion. I shoulda known they went corporate.
There are Kiehls stores all over the place. I've run into it in tourist strips like Banff.
I think most people would be shock to find out who really owns their brand. Kiehl's went corporate only because they could not loner keep up with supply and demand while keep quality up. They last private owner chose LOreal. They could have gotten more money but felt LOreal would maintain brand integrity.
