The Film Academy Cafe leaves us with a mystery

The Film Academy Cafe closed last week ... ahead of the demolition of 51 Astor Place.

But the closing leaves us without, uh, closure... At the time of the Cafe's departure, they were waiting for their letter grade from the DOH...

Reader: Fu Sushi remains open despite DOH closure

On June 27, we noted that the DOH had temporarily closed Fu Sushi on Avenue B near 11th Street. The restaurant was closed after receiving 99 violation points in its last inspection, which took place June 23.

Meanwhile, a reader over the weekend noted that "Fu Sushi on Avenue B was open for business and pretty busy. The bright yellow DOH sign is posted on their door, but at night they are keeping door propped open so no one reads it as they walk into the restaurant. I called 311 about it already, but they said it could take up to a month until this is addressed."

Quintessence reopens today, sign out front says

On Tuesday, the DOH closed Quintessence, the vegan-raw food restaurant on 10th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A for various infractions...

samo passes along the following... the sign out front says the restaurant — where Lou Reed has dined — will reopen today.

Yesterday, the DOH closed Quintessence, the vegan-raw food restaurant on 10th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A. Signs point to "emergency repairs," with a reopening tomorrow.

Naturally, this didn't make the folks happy at Quintessence, where they've enjoyed A ratings from the DOH. You can read the note they left on the door for patrons:

On 14th Street near Fourth Avenue. During their last inspection on Wednesday, they scored 46 violation points, with the most serious being — "Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas."

East Village bars and restaurants with 0 violation points from the DOH

The DOH closure of Ray's this week really prompted this post. We often (or, maybe, always) write about the bars or restaurants that the DOH shutters.

So, what about all the places in the neighbor with spotless records? (Well, at least spotless as of their last inspection.) There are a good number of places with O violations points. (Also quite a few with just 2 violation points.)

DOH closes Coyote Ugly

Last night, I noticed that Coyote Ugly was closed during prime happy hour time... (Noted this via Twitter)

...and this evening ... the gate is up, revealing the DOH sticker....

They scored 40 points on their last DOH visit in December... the major violations:
Sanitary Violations
1) Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations.
2) Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.
3) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
4) Filth flies or food/refuse/sewage-associated (FRSA) flies present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas. Filth flies include house flies, little house flies, blow flies, bottle flies and flesh flies. Food/refuse/sewage-associated flies include fruit flies, drain flies and Phorid flies.
5) Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.

Imagine they'll be back open soon enough...

DOH gives Yerba Buena a clean bill of health

Last Friday, the city inspected Yerba Buena at 23 Avenue A near Second Street ... and found enough violations to immediately shutter the Latin eatery...

The DOH returned Monday, and found zero violations... and the DOH gave YB the OK to reopen...

The city inspected the Latin eatery at 23 Avenue A near Second Street yesterday. It did not go well. The city immediately ordered the restaurant to close.

Establishment Closed by DOHMH. Violations were cited in the following area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed.

Sanitary Violations
1) Shellfish not from approved source, improperly tagged/labeled; tags not retained for 90 days.
2) Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.
3) Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.
4) Hand washing facility not provided in or near food preparation area and toilet room. Hot and cold running water at adequate pressure to enable cleanliness of employees not provided at facility. Soap and an acceptable hand-drying device not provided.
5) Personal cleanliness inadequate. Outer garment soiled with possible contaminant. Effective hair restraint not worn in an area where food is prepared.
6) Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.
7) Sanitized equipment or utensil, including in-use food dispensing utensil, improperly used or stored.

At Duke's on Avenue C between Eighth Street and Ninth Street. ONLY temporary. The DOH sign was posted March 7; renovations were behind done behind the closed door. Had not reopened yet as of last night.
