Eating in the East Village via Eater

[EVG photo of B&H Dairy, named in multiple Eater listicles]

Eater dropped a comprehensive East Village dining package yesterday that includes multiple categories, including:

10 Best Cheap Eats

22 Bars for Every Vibe

Where to Dine With a Group

Where to Celebrate a Special Occasion

22 Japanese Restaurants to Try

Maybe you'll find a new place among these picks ... or agree with the selections, or disagree entirely and write your own category like, say, 22 Bars for Every Vibe That Aren't These 22.

These are the 13 East Village restaurants on the 2018 Michelin Bib Gourmand list

[Hunan Bistro on 3rd Avenue]

Michelin yesterday released the list of Bib Gourmand restaurants in New York City.

These are restaurants where "it is possible to enjoy two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (tax and gratuity not included)."

Here's more from the news release: "A Bib Gourmand designation, reserved for a select number of restaurants rated by Michelin’s team of anonymous food inspectors, denotes establishments where diners can enjoy a great meal for a good value."

Thirteen East Village restaurants made the list of 120 overall for NYC:

Bar Primi, 325 Bowery at Second Street

ChouChou (new to list), 215 E. Fourth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B

Donostia, 155 Avenue B between Ninth Street and 10th Street

00 + Co., 65 Second Ave. between Third Street and Fourth Street

Hunan Bistro, 96 Third Ave. between 12th Street and 13th Street

Luzzo's (new to list), 213 First Ave. near 13th Street

The closed and for-rent restaurants along this part of 2nd Avenue

Starting just north of Third Street...

N'eat remains closed...

The restaurant serving "new Nordic fare" has not been open for the past month at 58 Second Ave. The sign on the door between Third Street and Fourth Street says: "Due to unforeseen building issues, we have to close temporarily for maintenance work." There isn't any mention of a temporary closure on their website or social media properties. Their phone number is not in service.

N'eat opened last November.

---

Express Thali at 82 Second Ave. between Fourth Street and Fifth Street hasn't been open for the past two-plus weeks...

The restaurant that serves/d vegetarian Indian cuisine opened in early March.

---

After less than three months in business, 100% Healthy Blend (or maybe just Healthy Blend) closed last November at Fifth Street...

The space has been on the market... the asking rent is $14,000 per month, per this listing.

---

And at 79 Second Ave. between Fourth Street and Fifth Street, the for rent sign recently arrived in the window at Heart of India...

The Marshal came calling here on July 24...

---

Closures aside, there are many fine places to eat along here that look to be doing brisk business... whatever your favorite places may be...

3 East Village restaurants that are expanding into new neighborhoods

1) Whitmans at 406 E. Ninth St. between Avenue A and First Avenue is opening its second NYC location ... in the Hudson Yards development on 10th Avenue between East 29th Street and East 30th Street, per DNAinfo. Co-owner Larry Kramer said that he hoped to be serving their style of burgers by the end of the summer or early fall.

2) Flinders Lane at 162 Avenue A between East 10th Street and East 11th Street is bringing their Australian cuisine down to West Broadway in Tribeca. CB1 gave them the OK for a liquor license this week, per the Tribeca Citizen.

3) Two Boots, with its flagship location on Avenue A at East Third Street, already has a fairly large pizzeria footprint ... and now they are adding to that. For starters, the 2 Boots in Grand Central is shutting down at the end of the month, as Eater first reported. Founder-owner Phil Hartman is moving nearby to 337 Lexington in the beginning of March. In addition, Eater notes that Hartman and his son Leon are adding locations in Jersey City, Stamford, Conn., Washington, D.C. and in the Financial District. This will up the 2 Boots total to nearly 20 in the United States.

What is it a good restaurant year for the East Village in 2013?

Seems so … as far as the arrival (and return!) of some affordable/unpretentious restaurant options … For starters, there's the second outpost of Joe's Pizza on East 14th Street… and Archie & Sons on Third Avenue...

Not to mention all the new taco choices — an East Ninth Street storefront for Tacos MorelosOtto's on Second Avenue … El Diablito Taqueria on East Third Street… There is also Taqueria Diana, which I haven't tried over on Second Avenue. (Ditto for Sembrado on East 13th Street.)

What else? The much-appreciated (by me, anyway) return of the original Nino's Pizza on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place… and the very happy return of Mee Noodle Shop and Grill on First Avenue…

What else? The new outpost of Papaya King on St. Mark's Place… Han Dynasty on Third Avenue?

Obviously there were many other openings … kept this to places that weren't selling, say, Bibb Lettuce Salads drizzled with cherimoya nectar for $39.

Anyway! Feel free to mention any other new places in the comments ... as long as it isn't a blatant shill.

Reader mailbag: Places to eat that have that old East Village vibe

EVG reader Exyallie left this comment yesterday on the post about the sale of 128 Second Ave. ... which also houses the Stage.

Lemme ask a question... I moved to the EV in 1972 (!) and have just returned after an absence of some years and, of course, am in total shock/disbelief.

So I am teaching in one of the local high schools, and I am committed to ONLY eating at places that retain some of the spirit of the nabe when I was there — I usually end up at the B&H across the street from this place... Any other ideas?

And this is NOT to hijack the thread or anything I promise... just wearing out too much shoe leather trying to find places, most of which are long, long gone!!!

Well, there are a handful of such places. Anyone want to offer some ideas?

Heart N' Soul introducing to-go menu, Meat n' Three

A tipster spotted this to-go menu in the window at Heart n' Soul, which opened on East Third Street at Avenue B several weeks ago in the former location of Mama's Food Shop ...

Richard Freedman, who has owned the building that housed Mama's for the past 30 years, left a comment on our previous post about Heart N' Soul. In part, it read:

When Brendan and Jeremiah bought the food shop I did everything I could to help them. A couple years ago when they were running into problems I forgave unpaid rent and lowered their rent. Again and before they closed, I met with Jeremiah and his wife and again offered to lower the rent. I guess the emotional and financial commitment to the restaurant was too much, but I know they tried very hard and I wish them the best.

I don't know if I'm going to succeed, but I hope people will give us a fair chance. It is my hope to keep the best of the old mama's (classic meat and 3 menu) plus some new and hopefully interesting items.
