RBG for 1st and 11th

Here's an in-progress look at the new RBG mural going up on the southwest corner of First Avenue and 11th Street... the mural is by @ellestreetart.

Earlier this month, workers removed Shepard Fairey's "Rise Above" mural that had been on this space for the past four years.

And as several people have already noted, this will be quite the contrast to the Michael Jackson mural on the southeast corner of First Avenue and 11th Street...

Thanks to William Klayer for the photo... and to Lola Sáenz for the initial tip!

A belated happy birthday to Pedro A. Campos

ICYMI: There's a new mural (as of mid-September) on the southwest corner of Avenue C at 12th Street ... Marthalicia Matarrita created this work of Pedro Albizu Campos (1891-1965),  father of the Puerto Rican Independence Movement.

The mural helped mark the birthday (Sept. 12) of Campos, after whom Campos Plaza across the street is named.

Thanks to the reader for the above photo... and here's another angle that includes the Puerto Rican flag...

'Project Stun' at the F stop on 2nd Avenue

In case you haven't been by the Second Avenue F stop at Houston... FL00D and Stänzi have collaborated to create "Project Stun," described as "a hybrid street art and animated experience," on view (and digitally here) through September.

Via the EVG inbox:
Paying homage to local culture and creativity from decades past, "Project Stun" emits hope upon the streets of New York City. These words hold power — letter by letter, chaotic expression seeps through in philosophies of NYHC, iconic musical influences (Bad Brains, CBGB) and signature motifs from the creators' archives.

A tribute to Elijah McClain in First Street Green Art Park

New this past week in First Street Green Art Park ... a tribute to Elijah McClain by the Brooklyn-based artist Vincent Ballentine.

As he wrote on Instagram:

#elijahmcclain was a specifically painful story for me. After teaching art for 5 years, he reminds me of all the young men I’ve worked with. To the artsy, sensitive, introverted and magical minds, you have purpose.

Elijah McClain was walking home from a convenience store in Aurora, Colo., carrying a bottle of iced tea last August when three police officers tackled him after receiving a 911 call about a suspicious man in a ski mask. McClain, a 23-year-old massage who taught himself how to play violin and guitar, was put in a stranglehold by police and injected with ketamine. He died six days later.

Oscar watch on 2nd Street

Over the weekend, artist Early Riser (aka Lauren Elzbi) completed a mural alongside the 1st Ave. Laundry Center on Second Street at First Avenue, as EVG contributor Stacie Joy reported.

The subject: local pup Oscar Madison, a special needs rescue...

The 12-foot-tall work is titled "I am strong, I am equal." She completed the mural using freehand, brush and a couple stencils, all in acrylic.

And here's the artist and Oscar with his human companion, Rick Van Benschoten ...

And this is the latest mural along this stretch of Second Street that's curated by East Village Walls...

Here's the completed mural of Kobe and Gianna Bryant on the Lower East Side

After a week, Mark Paul Deren, aka Madsteez, has finished his tribute to Kobe and Gianna Bryant outside the complex that houses Sun Yat Sen Middle School and Emma Lazarus High School on Hester and Eldridge...

East Village Walls curates this space, and the students here reportedly voted on who they wanted a mural of outside their school.

The mural is based of a photo by Atiba Jefferson.

Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were killed alongside seven other people on Jan. 26 when the helicopter they were in crashed in California.

Baby Yoda has left, but we have Princess Leia

The Baby Yoda mural's time has come to an end here at the Second Avenue F stop.

However, there is a Princess Leia wheatpaste courtesy of the Postman Collective as a consolation.

As for the new work here, Will Power, who created the Baby Yoda on Jan. 11-12, teamed up with Albertus Joseph for the mural, titled "Gritty City Style."

Monday's parting shot

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day... a look at what's left of the World Peace mural (circa 2010-2011) that includes his image on 12th Street between Avenue B and Avenue C...

Unfortunately, parts of this wall that faces the Children’s Workshop School have chipped away in recent years ... enough of the mural remains, though, to convey a message.

Artist Will Power finished his Baby Yoda mural yesterday at the Second Avenue F stop... Steven took these photos yesterday of the real star of the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian"...

This is the second Baby Yoda sighting in the East Village, joining the one put up for the Star Wars holiday windows at Two Boots on Avenue A.

Michael Jackson mural defaced on 11th Street

The mural showing two images of Michael Jackson was recently defaced on 11th Street at First Avenue.

Someone wrote "King Pedo" on the King of Pop mural ...

Earlier this year, HBO's two-part documentary, "Leaving Neverland," featured two former child performers describing how Michael Jackson allegedly sexually abused them while they were children.

Back in March, Eduardo Kobra, the prolific Brazilian artist who created the two Michaels mural in July 2018, said that he had no plans to remove the work in light of the new allegations of pedophilia.

Before and even after his death in 2009, Jackson was the subject of multiple sexual abuse accusations and police investigations as well as civil and criminal lawsuits. His estate continues to deny all allegations.

An EVG reader who spotted the "King Pedo" message was surprised that the mural hadn't been defaced before.

Previously on EV Grieve:
Report: No plans to remove the Michael Jackson mural from the wall on 11th Street

On the wall: Mural of Michael Jackson, as a child and an adult, in progress on 11th Street

Today, we say goodbye to the KFC's Cheetos Sandwich mural on 2nd Avenue and 14th Street

You likely have taken in that Chester Cheetah-Col. Sanders mural on Second Avenue at 14th Street. (Takes a minute.)

The mural arrived in late June to coincide with KFC's Cheetos Sandwich, the limited-time-only, colon-friendly menu item. The East Village location of KFC was picked to launch the sammy with a special menu featuring Cheetos hot wings, Cheetos-loaded fries and Cheetos mac and cheese. (Sorry — forgot to cover this in late June!)

Anyway, given the limited-time-offer nature of the KFC's Cheetos Sandwich, the mural was only going to be here for a short period of time.

And that time has come... a reader shared this photo...
