Collector's item

On the Bowery.

More on the mosque street art

On Saturday, I made note of these posters seen on Avenue A and 14th Street.... It's the work of the collective Concerned New Yorkers. I had missed the stories on their work in NYPress and the Huffington Post...

Reminders tonight: the Ninth Precinct Community Counsel meeting

The Precinct is between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

With two 'public roof decks,' 325 E. 10th St. ready to contribute to 'lively community'

Back in April, we told you about the year-long renovations coming to 325 E. 10th St. across from Tompkins Square Park....

Well, this may be a record... the scaffolding came down yesterday ... and 20 of those renovated apartments have hit the market .... starting at $2,000 for studios and up to $4,200 for two-bedroom pads...

Here's the listing per Streeteasy:

This amazing boutique building sits on Tompkins Square Park. This Classic walk up has been completely gut renovated and now has classic New York features like black and white tiled hallways, wall moldings and elegant lighting.

There are 14 brand new fully gut renovated Studio, 1 Bedroom and 2 Bedroom apartments with condo finishes. Each apartment features: wide plank walnut wood floors, recessed MR-16 lighting, kitchens with walnut cabinetry, carrera marble countertops and stainless steel appliances, and bathrooms with pedestal sinks, and marble tiles. Each apartment has its own Premium LG Washer and Dryer. This building also features a Landscaped Courtyard and 2 Public Roof Decks.

You can't tell from the street, but there's another building behind here that's only accessible through 325. Which explains the second "public" roof deck. And where the courtyard is.

As a fourth generation resident of 10th Street told me last night, "It looks like a dorm."

Indeed.

Will 325 E. 10th St. now "contribute to the lively community" like the sign promises?

Recession not over until Vanessa's says it is

The big news yesterday... those party animals at The National Bureau of Economic Research said that the recession ended in June 2009.

My ass.

It's not over. You know why? Because the "recession special" sign is still up at Vanessa's Dumplings on 14th Street near Third Avenue....

The Vanessa's sign has been up since the fall of 2008... when it comes down, then we'll know the recession is really over.

I suggest that the fine folks at The National Bureau of Economic Research start eating some dumplings in the meantime.

Roastown Coffee coming to Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place

Just repeating this from last evening... at the former Pizzanini space at St. Mark's Place and Second Street... a little something to compete with the Starbucks on the next block... or Mud just on Ninth Street.... or Porto Rico .... or Cafe Mocha on Second Avenue and Seventh Street or...

At Motorino, waiting for a table, watching a woman vomit out the front window

Food writer Jordan Zucker shared this anecdote on her blog Oxtails, Cocktails, and Rock Tales.

Her party ended up at Motorino on 12th Street and had a short wait for a table this past Thursday evening.

Then!

While we were waiting, a girl sitting at the open window table, turned to face the street and puked all over the side walk. Twice. The party then got up and left. The restaurant cleared the table and welcomed us to it. I explained what had happened and requested a hose down of the adjacent street. Apparently she had just done a number on the bathroom as well. Once they finished cleaning that, the sidewalk was next.

Despite all that, she liked Motorino.

Why Casa Adela is temporarily shuttered

Here at Casa Adela on Avenue C between Fourth Street and Fifth Street....

... per the sign: "Not having the refrigerator at appropriate temperature."

I appreciate the transparency here... Some of these DOH violations can seem pretty ticky-tacky... better to let customers-neighbors-bloggers know...

Of course, I'm not sure what my counsel would be for more serious offenses.... "XYZ Restaurant will reopen as soon as we kill off the 350 rats the DOH found in the walk-in pantry!"

By the way, if you've never been Casa Adela, you should give it try when she reopens...

What's that graffiti on the West Houston Starbucks branch mean?

And on the wall of Starbucks on West Houston near West Broadway Sunday afternoon...

Who knows? I always assume it's something lame like 'guerilla marketing' for a new TV show...

CB3 says no to Table 12's sidewalk booze

I couldn't attend tonight's CB3/SLA meeting due to a work commitment.... However, a reader chimed in with news that the committee (only four were there) rejected Table 12's request to serve beer and wine at their sidewalk cafe, which debuted back on Avenue A and 12th Street in late May...

To be honest, I'd want to drink if I had to sit here too....

Roastown Coffee coming to Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place

And so much for my scoop that an ice cream shop was opening here at the former Pizzanini space! My source was wrong...

Avenue A mystery bar/restaurant off tonight's CB3 docket

For me, one of the most interesting items on the CB3/SLA docket was:

10. Corp to be Formed, 150 E 2nd St (wb) (aka: 24 Ave A)

As you recall, Frank Prisinzano, who owns EV Italian empire Frank, Lil' Frankie's and Supper, came before the CB3/SLA committee on June 14 with his plans to turn the former grocery at 24 Avenue A and Second Street into what he described as fast-food Italian. The board never approved the application.

Anyway, the future of this corner inspired some spirited debate hereabouts. (78 comments or so.) Read some of that here.

So is someone else looking to take over the former Graceland space (and not a bank or 7-Eleven then!)? Plus, 24 Avenue A was Graceland's address; 150 Second St. is the address of Nicky's and the former barber shop next door. More mystery!

I asked district manager Susan Stetzer about this "corp to be formed." She said that she wasn't sure on this one — she didn't pursue because the application was withdrawn.

Anyway, it appears the real-estate listing for this space is still active.

On the Peels drink menu: The Joey Ramone (aka, this week's sign of the apocalypse)

A reader sent along a photo of the Peels drink menu... Hmm.

Booze-infused milkshakes ... The Bond Street Swizzle.... Purple Lady ... Jamaican Bug Juice ... Corn N' Oil ...

The JOEY RAMONE?!?!? With apple brandy, lime juice and concord grape juice (or concord grape wine??). I don't get it.

[Silence]

Anyway, the reader also noted that the food is really good at Peels.

[UPDATED]

Hmm... been more discussion on this than I anticipated.... And one reader thinks this makes sense since Peels is on the corner of the Bowery and Second Street — aka Joey Ramone Place.

City shutters Bull McCabe's backyard garden

An EV Grieve tipster reports that the city has temporarily shuttered the back garden at Bull McCabe's on St. Mark's Place...

According to the tipster, residents who live above the back garden had complained about incessant smoking from the bar's patrons...
