Sign of the Times
The guy in line said he will not pay $5 for the Sunday Times starting in June...nor will he pay $2 for the daily paper. He said he will simply just read the paper on his iPhone.

He won't have a paper to read if everyone -- like him -- starts refusing to pay for it. News gathering isn't free, folks.

If no one buys papers - there won't be a "physical" Ties, AND they'll charge $5 to read it on an iPhone.
clinging to print media is like clinging to vinyl lps. people aren't going to stop explaining all the things that are better about reading a physical newspaper any time soon, in the same way that some people will still try to tell you why a vinyl sounds better than a cd or an mp3.
don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to knock sentamentalism, but for sentimental reasons only will a print new york times continue to exist. granted i speak on behalf of the first generation more or less indifferent to the "joie" of cracking open the sunday times with my coffee at the neighborhood swivel-stool lunch counter - i understand why such "joie"s exist, and i'd be lying if i said i didn't have a few of my own that i'd hate to see disappear...like neighborhood swivel-stool lunch counters for instance. so i understand the sorrow about the decline of print media, but i don't necessarily think it's fair to reproach people who don't cling as tightly to the feel of $5 soft recycled news print against their hands.
and last time i checked, web advertising was a pretty profitable field so i'm not so sure that we will have to pay to read the news online any time soon either.
Vinyl LPs are making a comeback.
