Halloween protest in Tompkins Square Park no longer includes a midnight march

Speaking of the Halloween protest in Tompkins Square Park.... John Penley left a comment on the post saying there would no longer be a midnight march to anyone's apartment... However harmless the intention may have been, that element of the protest left some readers uneasy... As he wrote: "Just to show that I do listen to what people say ... I am not going to lead a march..." You can read the full comment here.

I'm really glad that the protest isn't happening outside of that woman's home. It's was upsetting to me and makes me wonder if "The Yuppies" have a point if the opposing side feels that's an effective form of protest if fear is the only weapon they have. It seems it would only give her more reason to achieve her goals. Think of the women in your lives and ask yourself if making them feel afraid in their homes would make them reconsider a political decision. It's male privilege and ignorance to insist that it's purely a righteous protest in the name of free speech. That may be the intent but it's not the reality and it's a disservice to a good cause.

Actually the above comment is pretty sexist. If you are getting paid by the taxpayers and you are going to sick the police on a whole segment of the community because a small fraction don't like concerts in Tompkins Square Park then you are opening yourself up to public peaceful protest. Whether the person is male or female they should be treated the same if they are getting paid by us. This person is not on the community board she is Rosie Mendez's chief of staff and she is doing this because she has higher political ambitions. Nobody elected her to make big community policy so I have little sympathy for her.

With all due respect Mr. Penley, you may not agree with anon 4:19 but in no way is his/her comment "sexist." I'm not sure you even understand what that (or "male privilege") actually means. Quit while you're ahead.

I understand what it means and what I am saying is that I would treat her no different than I would a man in her position. If I treated her any differently that would be sexist. Suggesting that a woman who is a public servant should be treated any differently than a man in her position is asking me to be sexist. I am also not going to quit and I am not sure I am ahead either.

"and I will kick the ASS of anyone who says otherwise."

@John Penley: I like some of the things you have to say and respect the fact that you have the courage of your convictions, but when you say things like this it makes you sound like a playground bully and I think leads people to take you less seriously. And capitalization in the middle of a sentence is never a good idea. One word: Italics.

Thank you Marty finally a critic who actually makes a comment without calling me a bunch of names AND puts their full name on a comment. I will give you a kiss if you come to the Park on Halloween. You have my total respect and I will take your advice Brother. Peace. JP

Respect back to you John and I'll make it to the park on Halloween. I have friends coming to town and we'll record the kiss with a picture! And I'm not a critic, just someone speaking my mind. Peace to you, my friend, Marty.

The Earth School seems to have been the first sound permit crackdown victim at Tompkins Square Park. Well folks Det. Hernandez is earning his taxpayer money by pulling the plug on sound for an event for little kids. A credit to the uniform Hernandez Hernandez will not tolerate out of control little children having fun in Tompkins Square park and fearing that unless he teaches them a lesson now about Authority they will grow up thinking that the park is a place to listen to music and have fun in. Good work Detective yuppies living all around the park commend you. Sieg Heil !

Hello
Vastly interested in the sound issues and possible new bandshell in Tompkins. Though, is it at all possible to better indicate how the 9th precinct became involved in the Earth School and a educational field trip. I am just assuming it was an educational field trip, and that is why I wonder why there is police consideration of the Earth School i the park. Was there need for a permit?
I need more information.
Does anyone recognize the blatant result of the recession on the activity in Tompkins.
While during the internet/property bubble all was relatively peaceful (yes of course sh-t went down)
now, as the lack of cash has made struggle a reality for those who went sky high on the bubbley bubbledy bubbles, with those popping, there is a heightened level of intolerance.
Just thinking......

Attention Rosie Mendez a solution to the Bandshell/Sound issue. Rosie has taxpayer money that she can spend on the neighborhood to improve and respond to problems in the LES. I propose that Rosie spend some of this money to buy a portable stage/bandshell that any and all community members who have permits for sound could use at the neighborhood parks and elsewhere. This portable stage would be designed to limit sound in the back and project it from the front. In addition community members could be charged a small fee to cover storage and transport of the new community stage. If people like this idea I suggest you contact our city council rep. and let her know. I believe everyone could and should support this.

People who make nameless comments and threats here are like the faceless "good Germans" or members of the KKK who hide behind their hood to say the things they do. Would you say the same things if EV made you identify yourselves ? No you would not and whether you like me or not I do not hide who I am and I will take your anonymous abuse and laugh at you because like I said before you are cowards with no heart and soul. Once I infiltrated the KKK to get photos of them for an anti-klan group and I have done time in Federal prison in Atlanta for demonstrating against Nuclear Weapons and Waste dumping in SC so a bunch of Yuppies who are too afraid to put thier names on comments do not scare me. I am also a Vietnam Era Vet and that is probably why I fight for the things I do and I really don't need this kind of attention but someone has to do what I do or people like you are going to steamroll people like me and those who agree with me out of the LES. By the way Happy Halloween see you at the park.
