Men of steel top off 51 Astor Place

Do you notice something atop of 51 Astor Place...?

Per these photos by Bobby Williams, you can see that the workers have signed the top beam and placed a Christmas holiday tree here...they must have reached the top.

Anyway, say what you want about the incoming 51 Astor Place (like calling it a Death Star) ... there is something rather hypnotic about watching the workers' high-wire act...

As a bonus, a shot of the top of the crane here...

Looks like they've "topped out" the steel. They usually put up a tree during the topping out ceremony. (I watch Discovery Channel alot.)

Not topped off yet. More floors to come.

I don't know how people can work way up high like that. My stomach was in knots just looking at the photos.

Goodbye, blue sky, goodbye. Goodbye.

I walk by this thing every day and I can't begin to tell you how intrusive the Death Star is to the block and the skyline. The building obliterates everything else around it. It's such a horror and so out of place for the neighborhood.

What's with the holiday/Christmas thing? Christmas has trees. Hanukkah does not.

That's actually something called a Wiecha tree. As per Polish tradition, it is placed above a building as it is being constructed for good luck.
