I think it's true, Elms die by rotting from the inside out.But how do they know, to be sure, before cutting it down?From what I've seen in TSP over the years, with many/most "dying" elms, one can see the internal ring of rot once they've cut it down.Still, the whole process is nasty, like a relative dying from cancer. They look so normal till they go.
On a more positive note. The tree closer to seventh street that was very much alive but totally on its side was finally hoisted up and secured with a rope tied to the fence to hopefully prevent it from falling again.
