About those fireworks last night on the East River

Photo via @Jazibaba

We received a lot of queries last night about the fireworks display that went off last night after 9 on the East River below the Williamsburg Bridge.

There wasn't any notification about them (as everyone pointed out, this account has one job) ... Which prompted plenty of tweets... and concern! Myles Miller of NBC New York got the scoop today from the FDNY: The fireworks marked the end of filming the fifth and final season of "The The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel." All good now?

Sometimes those Hollywood folks are clueless. The money could have gone to food banks or Mayor Adams next re-election campaign which might be the same thing.

Anyone confusing last nights "explosions" with bombing is a newbie here, and also doesn't know what bombing sounds like.
NY had and has approved private fireworks displays forever. Nothing unusual about it, and nothing "Hollywood" about it.

Are the Maisel people kidding? They already disrupt the area with all their filming.

Who the eff thought that FIREWORKS (unannounced) would be a great idea? Are they all from Los Angeles, and don't understand that 9/11 happened here?

Have never watched this show & hope they've wrapped their final season.

No need for fireworks for them to pat themselves on the back while scaring the you-know-what out of the rest of us for no sane reason.

Last week there were fireworks going off in Times Square for Monday Night Football. it sounded like gunfire and explosions. After all the stampedes that Times Square has had recently you would think the City would not allow this kind of noise pollution to go on, but money talks.

as much fun as fireworks are this is crazy use of capital, agree 100 with the idea of a donation from the prod company to any of the city services that desperately need funding or to the migrants something that would show concern for the people who live in their set would've been better use the fact that it was not announced says this wasn't about thanking New York but some expense account spend off for a small group of people zero thought to how sudden unannounced explosions in the sky might effect some people is as clueless as it gets

I think the biggest issue is the non notification. It was right outside my windows. Of course nyc isn’t functioning well with 311 or basic information. Amazon production. Yes they were pretty.

NYC has a budget over $100 billon. Where is he money going? NYC needs financial management and less corruption. Give money for migrants? All the people who had 'refugees welcome' signs jn 2017 should donate These production companies hire people and spend money in NYC. Maybe people don't understand that NYC is in serious financial trouble.

FDNY was aware (as they should have been for this type of event) but no notification going out via the "Notify NYC" platform? WTF?

"What we've got here is failure to communicate.”

What a wonderful grand final to a “marvelous” and fun show. Can’t wait to see it!
For all of those complaining about the fireworks or lack of sensitivity or the need for private money to be redirected to causes or political campaigns…….. you can’t be serious ?!?!

Wow I was wondering what all that explosive noise was last night I could not see the fireworks from LES building but heard it. I thought it sounded like fireworks but could not figure out what the occasion was for. Thanks for explaining.

I can't decide which is funniest about the comments in this thread:

1.) That the EVGrumps are whining about how awful fireworks are (fireworks spark joy in most people).

2.) The fact that the people can't tell fireworks from bombs (we hear fireworks nightly in the summer, why is this so surprising?)

3.) The EVGrumps keep whining about the city paying for fireworks, when it was the producers of a TV show paid for them.

yeah….or fireworks. because it’s their money and fireworks are fun, ya killjoy. 🙄

It's so weird to me when people can't tell the difference between fireworks and other sounds. It was clearly fireworks. I just assumed they were illegal fireworks being set off by someone randomly. Also agree with other commenters that it's silly to assume the city paid for these when it was clearly the studio. Whether their money would have been better used elsewhere is debatable but they were clearly celebrating filming their series finale and that is allowed, even if there are people that money would have better served. That said, I know it is hard enough for those with PTSD or other aversions to sudden loud noises to deal with fireworks when they *know* they're happening let alone unexpectedly and I definitely feel for those people. The sounds were quite loud last night.

They should have announced it so us hoi polloi could also watch. That they didn't isn't malice, it's incompetence and entitled tunnel vision cluelessness on the part of the production staff.

Too busy checking phones to notice there's a whole city all around their set.

Aside from the lack of communication from the twitter account, even the FDNY statement as not accurate. The production hasn't even finished filming. Last night's event was for a table reading for the final episode. lol

Anonymous said...

I thought that was a table reading. The fireworks just didn’t have the oomph that an opening-night performance would have had.

And you!!! Hilarious. So on par!!!! Sic.

And you, " Can't decide.?" Yikes. Trolls rule. It wasn't about your overly simplistic outline. Live in the present.

Lol. Thanks trollish. Yet, you are not acknowledging the real violence. The difference is that it has not happened to you. And, I hope it never does. Triggers are real. Gunshots or fireworks are not the issue, its what is reality. Be safe. Much love.

But you’re right we don’t know what bombing sounds like in NYC and I hope we don’t ever get to find out.

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel often has over the top visuals. It is probably in the show finale. They really celebrate NYC in that show. It was probably unannounced to prevent onlookers.

Anyone who was downtown on 9/11 will have a reaction to unannounced explosions. I’m all for fireworks and celebration but announce for god’s sake. Not cool .

Lottttttttttta grumpy people in the comment section today…..

Anonymous said...

Did not appreciate the unannounced fireworks.

LAME

Worth saying again for all clueless non-compassionate talking about grumpy people, if you were here for 9/11 any unknown loud noise, much less a series of them is disconcerting, even when that noise registers as fireworks after a few seconds. Heck, I still note low flying planes. It gets tiring with all the noise as it is. It would of been common courtesy to notify the hoi polloi via the FDNY or any other notification channels. In fact that show missed a great pr coup and could of promoted it as a thank you to NYC for being such a great setting for their show.

For those who deride the people confused about fireworks sounds. Its difficult. those sounds could have been far-off bombing in the distance. Or fireworks. And yes I have heard both, having been in Iraq several times during the worst of that war. those being so patronizing about it have never heard actual bombs in action. Add to that? the 2 major world nuclear superpowers have been openly and loudly threatening to nuke each other. In the midst of which? Nuclear PSAs being aired on TV, posted on subway trains and on buses all over NJ? Situational awareness is NOT paranoia. wtfu

Came to the comments to find “think of the dogs” but if you were thinking of dogs you wouldn’t own one in a city. /rant over
