Parks officials have said that the main lawn in Tompkins Square Park, a barren surface in many spots, has been reseeded as of last week.
The main gate into the area is locked... and there is at least one small sign noting to "please stay off" the lawn...
Still, readers report people hopping the fences to access the lawn... as well as residents continuing to walk their dogs in this area...
As one reader stated: "Maybe people can go a little easy on it for a few weeks?"

This is one of the reasons we can't have nice things: people too selfish to control themselves while the lawn grows in.
The Entitlement Virus is virulent in NYC.
It would be terrible if someone started a rumor that people who have been that area got Lyne disease...
When we are so deprived of public people fight over crumbs. There are vast amounts of spaces in this neighborhood currently covered with asphalt that can become green spaces: look at 2nd and 4th Streets between A and 1st, you can dedicate half the street space to be a public park and still maintain through traffic the same way. You can create a shared street on Avenue B.
All of Tompkins has become a dog run.
On the bright side... this is a good week for all of this rain. It will hopefully help the grass grow!

While we're on this topic of grass...
Just a little anecdotal information: This post is referencing the astroturf located on 11th-12th streets, next to the elementary school. That park is open to the public on evenings and weekends. It is sometimes packed with sunbathers lying out on the plastic grass, which is nice and seems totally safe.
Here's my warning: While not permitted, I took my dog there to run back and forth and for a few months last spring we went there regularly and sat out in the sun. After three months, she got a very aggressive form of skin cancer and, despite all of our medical interventions, she was dead by Christmas. Let that be a warning to everyone. Please don't lay out in the sun on that plastic grass. I think breathing in the chemicals released by it under the strong heat is toxic to living things. I mentioned this to the school, but it fell on deaf ears. If you look this stuff up, you'll learn that six or more baseball players have died from exposure to astroturf, which I did not learn until after my dog's passing. Please be careful out there. NATURAL GRASS IS BETTER!!!!
Remove all of the parked cars, put in trees, benches, flowers.

Since we are all so quick to complain it's only fair to be grateful when something is done to improve the park.

I have been dealing with Lyme disease for quite some time, not a funny rumor to start. How about just asking people to practice a little self-control and to take responsibility for their actions?
Maybe there is is a god after all? I've been lamenting my frustration as a nearby resident over this part of the park for years. What took so long? I wish people would actually read the sign, abide by its wishes, and stay off until the grass grows, but that would require self awareness, respect for the neighbors, and a bit of maturity.
Those itty-bitty signs are clearly insufficient and too infrequent. There should be a sign tied to the fence every few feet.
Or just circle the whole damn section with police crime tape. That would give folks pause..........
And all of those baseball players were on the Phillies, playing on the same turf.
thankfully the rain and soggy ground will keep the crowds at bay, at least for today, hopefully. meanwhile the pigeons are having a feast, hopefully there will still be some seed left to take root...
