Prepping East Ninth Street to make to look like it did, oh, 40-plus years ago...

Speaking of the Coen Brothers... Bobby Williams notes that various carpenters and crew members started the transformation of East Ninth Street in advance of Thursday's shoot here for the 1960s period piece "Inside Llewyn Davis."

Whatever you think abut the Coen Brothers (have you watched "Blood Simple" lately?) ... it brings back some film-shoot cred around here after "The Smurfs" and "Step Up 3D."

Empanadas coming to East Ninth Street

That's the sign up in the window at the former Itzocan Café space on East Ninth Street just west of Avenue A. Perhaps this will make up for the loss of empanadas around here since Ruben's closed on First Avenue back in August 2010.

Anyway, a little food life here on East Ninth now with the arrival of Cigkoftem, the Turkish vegetarian fast-food, a few weeks ago...

Thanks to @jeneanchapman for the tip and photo.

The Coen Brothers want to dress up East Ninth Street

The Coen Brothers are ready to film the 1960s period piece "Inside Llewyn Davis," and they need your help. As you can see from the flyers that the crew posted yesterday, the production would like to request permission "to temporarily dress several storefronts and buildings" to fit the period here on East Ninth Street.

Per On Locations: "The movie follows a protagonist loosely based on singer Dave Van Ronk, a friend of Bob Dylan’s. Oscar Isaac stars as the title character while Justin Timberlake co-stars as another folk musician, his wife will be played by Carey Mulligan, and John Goodman will play a jazz musician who takes a road trip with Davis."

The crew will film on Feb. 16 from 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. Expect the color-coded Justin Timberlake sighting-level system to be on Red all that day and night.

That Turkish fast-food place is now open on East Ninth Street

We pointed this out on East Ninth Street... just west of Avenue A a few weeks ago.

Cigkoftem, a Turkish vegetarian fast-food chain founded in 1993, opened this past weekend... And we have no idea why the photo looks as if we were falling when we took it...

Anyway, they were handing out free samples... Anyone try it?

Turkish vegetarian fast-food chain opening on East Ninth Street

A tipster points us to East Ninth Street... just west of Avenue A, where Cigkoftem is opening... it's a Turkish vegetarian fast-food chain founded in 1993 ... their website doesn't translate all that well ... As far as I can tell this is the chain's first New York outpost.

By the way, this is the space to the left of Itzocan Café. Wasn't it some sort of short-lived coffee shop/falafel place or something previously?

Autumn Skateboard Shop has closed on East Ninth Street

The other day @bonatron9000 pointed out that Itzocan Café closed on East Ninth Street near Avenue A... now, she notes that the restaurant's next-door neighbor, Autumn Skateboard Shop, has also rather abruptly closed...

As New York magazine wrote, "Autumn may not have the largest inventory in the city, but they are big on creativity and carry unusual pieces that you won’t see everywhere else."

The store's website is still live ... so perhaps you can still order stuff online...

Reader report: Itzocan Café has closed on East Ninth Street

EV Grieve reader @bonatron9000 made an unhappy discovery this morning:

"Itzocan Café — the delicious French/Mexican restaurant on Ninth Street near Avenue A — is shuttered with a sign thanking customers for their years of patronage."

As you can see, the space is already for rent...

New bakery now open on Ninth Street

A reader reports that Zucker, a Mediterranean-style bakery, opened today... The reader says that the place has a "nice, laid-back vibe" with Stumptown coffee and a limited selection of baked goods as they were still filling the cases.

As Patrick Hedlund noted at DNAinfo, Zucker is "the brainchild of Village resident Zohar Zohar, an Israeli native who decided to return to the culinary world after taking nearly a decade off to devote to her family."

We stopped by for a quick photo and will check it out once they are a little more settled in...

About the fire on East Ninth Street last evening

Last evening, an East Ninth Street resident told us about a fire on the block near Second Avenue...

[via]

According to DNAinfo, the blaze started in the second floor of 323 E. Ninth St. There were no injuries. The FDNY had the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.

Mediterranean-style bakery opening on East Ninth Street

Yesterday morning, Dave on 7th passed along word that a new bakery is opening on East Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue. (433 E. Ninth St. to be exact.) Looks like the name will be Zucker.

Meanwhile, DNAinfo checks in with a story... turns out the space will be a "Mediterranean-style bakery serving up gourmet cookies" run by Zohar Zohar.

According to DNAinfo, "Zohar attributes her style of cooking to her grandparents — Polish and Czechoslovakian Jews who brought a European sensibility to their cuisine when arriving in to Israel." Her friend Johnny Iuzzini, the head pastry chef at Jean Georges, is serving as an adviser.

Argosy is cleaned out on East Ninth Street

Back in May, we noted that Argosy, the vintage clothing store on East Ninth Street between First Avenue and Avenue A, appeared to be closed. The gate was down. Mailed piled up inside. In any event, in the last few days, someone has cleaned out the store...

Expect a "for rent" sign here soon enough.

Olivia has closed on East Ninth Street

When we last checked in on the Mediterranean-themed Olivia on East Ninth Street, the restaurant had closed because of a problem with the air conditioner...

A few weeks later, the space is now for lease.

Olivia had taken over the the short-lived Sintir, the Moroccan eatery/lounge that opened in May 2009. Too early to say that this is a jinxed/doomed location for a restaurant?

On East Ninth Street, Olivia remains closed without air conditioning

The bistro here between Avenue A and First Avenue has remained closed since at least Saturday... the sign out front points to faulty AC.

Haven't heard much from here since that whole baby lamb post.

Argosy appears to be the latest East Village vintage clothing shop to close

We haven't seen much activity lately at Argosy, the vintage clothing store on East Ninth Street between First Avenue and Avenue A...

...and some important-looking court documents appeared on the gate this week...

...and the mail continues to collect inside the gate...

If this turns out to be a permanent closure, then Argosy is the latest East Village thrift store/boutique to shutter in the last 18 months or so, a list that includes:

More vintage doom: Beauty Crisis is closing

Monk Thrift Shop on Avenue B

Atomic Passion on Ninth Street

O Mistress Mine on 11th Street

Andy's Chee-Pees on St. Mark's Place

Physical Graffiti turns into a tea shop

Junk on St. Mark's Place

Personal Affairs on Seventh Street

Amon-Ra Showroom on East 10th Street

The Monk Thrift Shop on Avenue C
