Helping Save Jerry
From the EVG inbox… several people here and on Facebook asked if there was a way to help out Jerry Delakas, who the city locked out of the Astor Place newsstand that he has operated the past 26 years… several residents have come together to set up the following...
There is now a contribution box at The New York Copy Center at 34 E. Seventh St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. (cash only, no checks). All proceeds will be given to Jerry.

Developer says 51 Astor Place will be fully leased by the end of January (2014)
“By January 30 we’ll be 100 percent leased there, and that’s all I’ll say,” he told The Commercial Observer today, declining to give any additional details.
In October, 1stdibs reportedly signed a 15-year lease for the entire third floor. And there are also rumors that Twitter is in negotiations for space here.
This 2nd Avenue apartment looks rather haunted, though isn't likely
We were just poking around the apartment listings at Streeteasy, as we like to do. We spotted this new ad for a one-bedroom apartment at 103 Second Ave. Innocuous enough.
The photo caught our attention, though. The empty space is rather chilly looking, with that lonely ceiling fan.
But what is really chilly... and maybe scary! Who are those shadowy figures lurking in the other room?
Ghosts of Brokers past? Hard to capture much paranormal activity based on one photo. We need to see the clocks.

Musician Dev Hynes 'lost everything,' including his dog Cupid, in last night's fire on E. 11th Street

We're learning more about last night's fire at 227 E. 11th St.
The heavily damaged apartment in the building belonged to Dev Hynes, a British singer, composer and songwriter who has written for The Chemical Brothers and Sky Ferreira and tours now as Blood Orange. He took to his Twitter account today to report the losses that he suffered...
Last night, the unthinkable happened. My entire apt burnt down while I was out. I've lost everything I own, including scores, hard drives...

Manhole fire on Cooper Square
We don't know too many details of what happened here between East Fifth Street and East Fourth Street ... other than what you can see in this photo via EVG reader Marc that shows the scene... and a car not looking too well at the moment.
Anyway, you always post photos of manhole fires.
More about saving Jerry's Newsstand
Over on Astor Place outside the downtown 6, Jerry Delakas remains businessless. As we first reported last Tuesday, the city shut down the newsstand he has run the past 26 years for "operating illegally." (Long story. Find a good recap here.)
East Village resident Kelly King and Community Board 2 member Marty Tessler have been helping organize support for Jerry. Last night, a "Save Jerry's Newsstand" Facebook page arrived … and there's another rally tomorrow afternoon from 4:30-6 p.m.
However, time is running out. Word is Jerry has until Saturday to pay the city $37,000 to keep his newsstand … or he will have to permanently vacate the space. Of course, the city shut down his newsstand 11 days ahead of the deadline, preventing him from making any revenue.
NY1 had a report on this situation last night:
“We're about to file our appeal when they slapped the padlock on, and as far as we're concerned he was entitled to stay here until his appeal was decided, we think it's a violation of his due process rights,” said Delakas’ lawyer, Arthur Schwartz.
Councilwoman Rosie Mendez says Delakas deserves to keep operating, this is his only source of income and he's the sole provider for a sick brother.
“In this great city, one of the things we're known for I think, is sort of having compassion and looking at when there is an exception to policy, I think this would be the case,” said Mendez.
Meanwhile, there are rumblings that some residents who live in the building above Starbucks want the newsstand to go away. There are also stories of a female resident who rips down the signs of support from Jerry's Newsstand every night.

Back in the fall, the ownership of 128 Second Ave. changed hands for $7.5 million… The listed buyers for the building between between St. Mark's Place and East Seventh Street are LLCs... with addresses that matched up to Stellar Management ("known as a premier owner and operator of commercial real estate") and Icon Realty Management, the hotshots who have bought up several East Village properties, such as 326-328 E. Fourth St.
Since then, we've heard rumors about shoddy treatment of the remaining tenants … one resident said that the building was without heat for more than five days in October, which is "more added stress on the good people being treated unfairly and pushed out of the building one by one. What a neighborhood killer."
Most recently, residents spotted this notice from ConEd, who "has not received an application for service for the light and power account in this building."
The service will be turned off "on or after Dec. 23 unless the Landlord or his Agent contact us for service."

On Avenue A, Flea Market Cafe is now Ten Degrees Bistro
Back on Thanksgiving, we noticed that a worker was painting over the Flea Market Cafe sign on Avenue A...
And that's the last time we thought about it… until EVG regular Bayou pointed out the restaurant's chalkboard sign from Sunday … with a new name — Ten Degrees Bistro...
Ten Degrees management made the announcement on their Facebook page back on Dec. 1.
To all our patrons & friends, we would like to announce that the bistro we purchased last Spring, The Flea Market Bistro, was finally approved a name change and hence forward shall be known as TEN DEGREES BISTRO. YAAY..so excited!!!!! ..we have fantastic new additions to the Brunch and dinner menu...
The folks at Ten Degrees Bar around the corner on St. Mark's took over operations of the restaurant ... with a reopening this past March.
Here is the Bistro's new menu.
Flea Market Cafe closed in August 2011 after all that arson business.

The "for lease" sign went up on the former 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place last Thursday, as we first noted. At the time, the listing wasn't yet online.
Now it is.
Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of details (such as asking rent!) ... but we have a better idea how the Winick reps are marketing the space...
Some of the specifics:
Looks as if the parcel includes what used to be Baoguette Cafe.
Anyone for reviving BAMN!, the garish automat that somehow managed to stay open for 2.5 years?

SantaCon 2013 postmortem

We'd like to forget all about SantaCon 2013. (Oh, but God, we can't — we see red Santa suits and hear Wooooooooo! every time we blink!)
However, there are several recappy type articles that, uh, recap what went on... like this one from The Wall Street Journal that provides some arrest numbers from the weekend.
Amazingly enough, per the article:
[T]he New York Police Department made no arrests, issued eight summonses for open alcohol containers and two summonses for disorderly conduct related to the event. Last year, police made one disorderly-conduct arrest, issued 73 open-container summonses and issued one other summons for public urination.

How about the subways and buses and stuff?
Metropolitan Transportation Authority police issued five summonses for disobeying the alcohol ban and three for disorderly conduct this weekend, an agency spokesman said.
So you see, it really was nothing. You SantaCon haters must just not like to have fun!

The Odessa Cafe and Bar will not reopen
In mid-November, we started hearing rumors — from three different sources — that the Odessa Cafe and Bar was coming back to life on Avenue A.
However, the Odessa folks have confirmed that the deal fell through, and the Cafe and Bar will not reopen. This past week, the "thanks for your support" sign returned to the empty restaurant's front window. (There's an addition to the sign — the "and bar" part.)
Meanwhile, though, Leo, a favorite bartender-waiter from the Cafe and Bar days, is still at the newish bar in the back of the Odessa Restaurant Wednesday to Sunday evenings starting at 8.

As we reported on Friday, a rendering went up for the new dorm coming to Cooper Square and East Sixth Street… We stopped by during the weekend for another glance … as you can see, work has started on the corner space…
As Curbed reported, Marymount Manhattan College will be leasing the space.

Over on St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue, the Yogurt Station covered up their windows with trash bags for months at a time … giving us the impression that they had closed for business. But they always came back for the FroYo Season.
We thought the same thing when they closed earlier in the fall. Then the sign came down… and we waited and waited to see what would take the Station's place...
… the sign for the new business arrived last Friday. (Or maybe Thursday.)
