I live next door on the same floor (4th). I happened to step outside my building exactly at the time the firetrucks arrived, and at that point I didn't see any smoke. About 30 mins later a policeman said it was safe to enter my building, but it still smells like smoke, and firefighters are still in the building that caught fire.
i live at 229 and the first I knew of it was when the fire trucks arrived. Nobody came into the building to alert us at any time. Is that normal?

I'm in 229 E. 11th. Thanks to FDNY for the brave work, and for telling us we were ok not to evacuate. So sorry for our neighbor and his loss.
