Breaking: Japadog is closing for good after tonight on St. Mark's Place

[January 2012 photo by Bobby Williams]

The Japanese-inspired hot dog restaurant by way of Vancouver opened the first U.S. outlet at 30 St. Mark's Place to great fanfare in January 2012.

And now, word is circulating that Japadog will be closing after business tonight. No reason given at the moment for the closure.

A quick reaction via Twitter…

We spotted the listing for the Japadog space yesterday on Craigslist, though we didn't realize the place was closing this quickly:

***Exclusive Listing by Exit Realty Landmark***
Newly renovated restaurant with full basement. Vented both on the grand floor and basement. 9 ft ceiling.
No Key Money.
W & B in place
New 10 Yr Lease available.
1500 sqft, same basement
Wide Front approx 20 ft
3 seasons of outdoor seating

St. Marks Place, located at heart of East Village. Amazing foot traffic.

We'll have more on this later… but if you want one one last umami dog with those bonito flakes, better hurry…

Company Bar and Grill is for sale on East 10th Street

We spotted a listing on Craigslist this week noting that Company Bar and Grill is for sale at 242 E. 10th St. at First Avenue.

Given that these ads can be bogus (see Busy Bee Bike Shop), we contacted the bar. Proprietor Shawn Rogol confirmed that Company is for sale… He is moving, and he needs to sell the business. (Asking price: $225,000.)

Rogol took the bar over in the fall of 2011 and installed a new kitchen and made the whole place less sketchy.

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

Looking at a Missed Connection on Craigslist today...

dude who looks like Robert Smith - w4m (East Village)
I used to see you all over the East Village. The first time I saw you was at a Karen Finley reading at Barnes and Noble 3 or 4 summers ago. Then you were everywhere. On the L train. At some other feminist performance event I can't remember the name of now. Once I was at the Bean on 2nd ave and you came in to put up your event poster. It seemed like you were a regular. I went away for the summer and haven't seen you since. Are you still alive?

Not sure what era of Robert Smith this Robert Smith looks like (80s? 90s? 2000s?) Regardless! Hope that it works out for you kids!

Are you going to rent out your East Village apartment for the Super Bowl?

[A welcome on Avenue C]

As we first and exclusively reported, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., is hosting Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2. Which means thousands and thousands of football fans from Denver (go Nuggets!) and Seattle (go Mariners!) will be descending upon NYC for food, lodging, alcohol poisoning, etc.

Thankfully, given the generous nature of NYC residents, there are plenty of people offering up their apartments on AirBnB and Craigslist for a pretty nice markup. For example! There's a nice apartment on Second Avenue going for $1,000 a night — with a living/dining space that can "accommodate up to 50 people." Meanwhile, over in StuyTown, there's a two-bedroom unit asking $6,500 for six nights. Or if you really want to do it up, you can rent this one-bedroom apartment on Second Avenue and East First Street for the entire month – $4,600.

Sure, renting out your place like this (for less than 30 days) violates New York State law, but you can make up for any possible fines by placing some side bets on the game.

Take these old MTA benches off of LaMaMa's hands — or they'll be chainsawed!

An EVG reader passed along this Craigslist post

We payed full price, $650 each — you can have them for free, you just have to pick them up. We will even help load them into your truck. They weigh ~500# each. We used them in a show and the show will be done. You MUST pick them up Sunday night or early Monday morning at LaMama theater. Otherwise they will be chainsawed...

FYI: they are 10' plus long, so you would need a box truck, not a cargo van.

Seriously, haven't you always wanted one of these in your back yard? Or you artist loft?

Love, Veselka Style

[Via Craigslist]

A Missed Connection posted yesterday on Craigslist:

Veselka Romance - w4m - 23 (East Village)

One week ago I was sitting outside of Veselka, reading "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath.
(My favorite book)
I saw you from the table nearest to 2nd ave, on the side of the restaurant.
You had the most beautiful brown eyes I have ever seen.
Tall, thin, with a beard. We made eye contact for about fifteen seconds, and then you walked away, down 9th street.
I would love to meet you.
You are exactly my type.
You probably live in Williamsburg, and shop at local farmer's markets.
I would love to buy some vegetables with you.
I like to make omelettes with fresh asparagus and swiss cheese,
I could make you one.
I hope you don't have a girlfriend.

SFW: This East Village apartment is 'sexy,' though we don't know why

Here's is a Craigslist ad for a pretty-average looking one-bedroom apartment. The headline describes the place as "sexy." Perhaps it is, though you wouldn't know it from the description:

New renovation

Perfect location near Whole Foods Trader [sic] and all transportation

Sun drenched with windows a [sic] plenty and Skylight

Queen sized Bedroom

Ample closets with Overhead stotage [sic]

Exposed Brick

And the unit is an unsexy $2,150. Any ideas why this is sexy? Or what, in general, makes an apartment sexy, aside from maybe the residents?

Cronut™ delivery service offers Cronuts™ for $35 each (aka, Noted)

A reader shares this Craigslist post marked "East Village":

I have 4 delectable cronuts from Dominique Ansel Bakery available for delivery 8/13, 8/14, 8/15, 8/16 and 8/17.

$35 per Cronut.

Cronuts™ are those half croissant, half doughnut things that people stand in line for over on Spring Street. They go for $5 retail.

Anyway, certainly not the first Cronut™ delivery service... and certainly not the last...

For conversation starters, there's always a Bud Light Lime Display Tree

So there's this. A tipster shared this Craigslist post dated July 28 ... Per the all-caps post, it's a "GREAT DISPLAY RACK AND CONVERSATION STARTER."

Seeing as it's Craiglist, you never know if this is for real... Also, the address for pick-up is the St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery.

In any event, not sure if this would start a conversation as much as stifle it...

East Village resident wants 'female hipster' to moon him for 3 seconds

Courtesy of Gawker, we learned about the existence of this real or fake Craigslist ad...

Mooned by female hipster
I know, I know. Strangest fetish ever. But I can't successfully talk myself out of it, so I'm hoping to craigslist it into enactment.

What I'm hoping (but not exactly expecting) to find is an attractive-ish female who is either a hipster or who possesses the wardrobe and willingness to fake it, who will consent to moon me for a fee.

I am able to host this encounter at my place in the East Village or willing to travel virtually anywhere else you'd prefer. Chaperones are perfectly welcome. The entire transaction would consist of me handing you cash in advance followed by you mooning me for approximately three seconds. The entire encounter needn't last more than five minutes, awkward introductions included. No photography, no commercial aspect, no contact whatsoever.

Your chance to buy an ice cream truck, maybe become 'Dairy Dan'

A reader sent along this Craigslist ad under the Manhattan/East Village section ... under for sale/business ...

I have a beautiful ice cream truck for sale, and ready to make money now! Its a 1978 ford step van Including : Taylor air pressure ice cream machine, 2 roof top AC units, Freezer for novelties, Topping unit, milk shake blender, new music box, and a 20 kw water cooled generator. for sale for $20,000.

Seems legit... though "Dairy Dan the Ice Cream Man" ...

...can mean something really different.

We asked Doug Quint, co-proprietor of the Big Gay Ice Cream shops and truck, about all this.

"My statement as a professional, and you can quote me, is 'what the fuck?'"

They are currently hiring. According to the Craigslist add:

Sad Guys: Burger joint closes on Second Avenue

Good Guys, the burger-fries-salad-wraps-waffles-smoothie eatery that replaced a Subway on Second Avenue, has closed. Paper went up on the windows this week. The place opened in late December.

We honestly never saw anyone in the place (though we know that Blue Glass tried a burger once). The menu was about the length of the block. Seemed to try to do too much. (And those sidewalk flags. And that unfortunate typo.)

We spotted an add on Craigslist noting a sale of the equipment here. The add says "we have a list of used restaurant equipment that we are looking to sell in a timely manner. All equipment was purchased aprox 6 months ago. we have acquired this space and do not have use for these pieces of equipment."

So it sounds as if a new tenant has something else planned here that doesn't include:

-Soda machine with custom cabinet and drain system with Ice machine attached.

-food service counter with soda cup dispenser.

-waring Belgium waffle machine

Meanwhile, about 500 Good Guys business cards are in the gutter on Second Avenue.

Citi Bikes, work day 1

After yesterday's more leisurely Citi Bikes debut for riders with annual memberships... I decided to take a very unscientific look at the first working weekday for the bikes... I checked out the Docking Station at Astor Place (above) ... it was nearly empty the few times that I walked by ... (At the same time, docking stations near City Hall and Wall Street were reported full...)

An afternoon look at the docking station on East Seventh Street at Avenue A found a lot of bikes available ...

[Bobby Williams]

Crain's reported today that there were a few snafus in the system on Day 2, including that riders complained of problems docking their bikes.

Meanwhile today, WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show explored the question: Is the new bike share a practical – and fast — transportation option for congested NYC?

To find out, three WNYC employees left the same spot on Clinton Street and East Boradway, each taking different modes of transportation to get back to the station: bike share, cab and subway.

(Spoiler: the bike share won.)

You can listen to the segment here.

In other developments, there is already a Craigslist Missed Connection Post, per the Observer.

To date, more than 16,400 people have paid $95 for an annual membership, according to Crain's. BusinessWeek explores Citi's sponsorship angle in all this ("$41 million over five years is a rounding error for the company") ... while Motherboard explores who might be making money in all this.

Sad sale of the 9th Street Bakery continues

As you probably know, 9th Street Bakery is closing in the next few weeks. And owners Oleg and Tetyana are selling off pieces of the bakery, including the dry-curved glass showcases.

Even more of the bakery's accessories are now on Craigslist... this one is a gut wrencher — the sale of the wood-framed chalkboard noting the daily specials...

A juice/smoothie shop is apparently taking over the space.

9th Street Bakery now selling its glass showcases

Yesterday, we reported the sad news that 9th Street Bakery will have to close in the next three weeks after their landlord ended the lease. And now owners Oleg and Tetyana are selling off pieces of the bakery. An ad appeared on Craigslist yesterday for the bakery's two dry-curved glass showcases.

A bakery has been at this location for 87 years. A juice/smoothie shop is apparently taking over the space.
