Rumors: Ground floor at 147 First Avenue will include the Bean AND a bar

As we first reported, The Bean is opening an outpost at the former home of Anjelica's Herbs on First Avenue and Ninth Street...

And, now, that persistent rumor: The ground floor will also house a bar. Per an EVG reader:

"I heard from someone who talked to the workmen that a BAR is going to take half the former herb store on the ground floor. The Bean will have half, and a bar will have the other half. I dunno, seems like very small spaces for two establishments. And dear God, ANOTHER bar???"

Yes! The always reliable construction worker! Sure, it's possible. But we've been wrong here before... remember the motel? Or the full demolition? (Hey, we're one out of three so far!)

Meanwhile! Looks like the painting is continuing... and we see some charcoal gray creeping up...

The upper floors are still set for luxury apartments... still looking like what a reader described as something that blew in from the Hamptons...

"Balconies" bolted into the brickwork of a 100 year old building. They're kidding right ? Has the DOB seen this ?

Installing a bar on the ground floor of a 4 floor luxury apt bldg would be kind of poor salesmanship ("Hey, you'll love it here! There's a noisy bar right downstairs!") Unless of course the units have been pre-sold ("Hey, I never promised you a rose garden!")

@Anonymous. Yes they have. Back in 2007, Ramy Isaac (the architect on this project) had to surrender his ability to self-certify his plans and also his ability to sign off on completed work without a DOB inspection.

I sure hope those are fire escapes. The construction on that building has been scary enough--sagging walls, scaffolding hanging only on parapet hooks, the funky brick work, and so on--that I told the kids earlier this summer to always cross the street on the south side of that corner.

This is just heartbreaking. This is Icon Realty! Icon Realty is running an illegal hotel on Tenth between A and B called Hotel Toshi. What is being done about this? Thought that this was illegal and supposed to be resolved at this point. Anybody know?

We cannot and should not support Icon. The HOWL festival should not take money from Icon and hang a banner with Ginsberg's face on it from the building.

This is terrible news that this building will be luxury housing.

Icon Realty is responsible for so many terrible things in this community. They keep buying up buildings and then knocking them down and yet not-for-profit groups take their money? As far as the Hotel Toshi, it is illegal, but true to form Bloomberg is taking his sweet ass time enforcing the law because he loves tourists and real estate developers as do all the folks who are gonna run for Mayor. Call Rosie Mendez or send her an e-mail to complain about the lack of enforcement and then call 311. And btw the rats ate the new plants in front of this place, which seems pretty appropriate as Terrence Lowry is the biggest rat of them all.

There are currently no bars on 1st Avenue between Coyote Ugly and 14th Street. Weird.

@Jill - The Mosque and PS 19 are on that stretch of 1st Ave and the NYSLA has the 500 feet rule so that partly explains why there are no bars there.

the 500 ft rule does NOT apply to beer/wind licenses and there are restaurants that serve beer and wine on first between ugly and 14th street.

@ blue glass - The issue at hand was, "There are currently no bars on 1st Avenue between Coyote Ugly and 14th Street" and the 500 ft rule applies. Who was talking about restaurants?
